Brno, South Moravia Region, Czech Republic
If you go there by bike, be sure NOT to drive through the pedestrian zone! Policemen there are merciless.

Try Starobrno beer. It's made right in the city and you can smell the yeast.

Brno has a castle, gothic style cathedral, dead monks, dead "dragon", brewery, Baron Trenk, Tugenhat Villa and lots of great hospoda!! Great destination for a long weekend but look to hire a car and explore the Moravian vineyards and surrounding area if spending a week or more on vacation.

After the excitement of Prague, Brno may seem like a large letdown. It lies on the main railroad line that links Prague with Vienna, Bratislava and Budapest, but many tourists rarely stop by to take in the city. It seems to act more as a place to quickly recharge one's batteries before venturing into the rest of Moravia (eastern Czech Republic). Some of the highlights of the city include Špilberk (former fortress that now houses a museum), Petrov (Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul),Villa Tugendhat (on UNESCO's list of World Heritage sites) and Kapucínský kostel sv. Kříže (Capucin Church of the Holy Cross). For accommodation, there's the usual assortment of hotels but not that many hostels. One can also look into opportunities to stay with members of CS or HC (170 members of CS and 668 members of HC are in Brno. Even if we account for the fact that many members of CS also belong to HC, it still shouldn't be overly difficult to be able to stay at someone's home for a couple of nights.)

Mummified friars are morbidly cool, but Brno is lacking in hostels.

Ladies, take care of your hadbags. My one got stolen at a restaurant. But that was the only annoying thing, the rest was great, also the police was very nice when I had to report the theft;-)

The reason I visited Brno was for to see the MotoGP race. It's actually not too far from Vienna in Austria, and it was pretty easy to make a day trip out of it from Vienna to Brno. Later on, I learned that Brno is the second largest city in the Czech Republic (I heard someone compare it to Manchester in the UK ...), and not surprisingly has quite a few good local beers. Also not too far from Brno, is the UNESCO heritage listed city of Telc, which is definitely worth a visit. We managed to fit this into our day trip from Vienna to see the MotoGP race as well, one of the benefits of the long days in summer.
