    Latacunga, Central Highlands, Ecuador

    Cuenca, Southern Highlands, Ecuador
Cuena is a real change from most parts of Ecuador. It is a really beautiful city, with graceful streets and stacks of impressive churches. Although....Cuenca can sometimes feel a bit dead, especially in comparison with the liveliness of the coast (think Guayaquil) Having said that, Cuenca does have some really trendy bars, cafes and restaurants to chill at. - A must is LA PAROLA CAFE on CALLE LARGA. It only opened 4 months ago, but its a real gem. - If your going to stay the night anywhere, make it El Cafecito. Really cool, full of travellers to meet up with, excellent food. Only downside is if you want to have an early one, when the restaurant is still lively. US$6 a night - Day trip not to miss is the Parque Nacional Cajas! Bloody INCREíble! Costs US$10 if your a tourist or US$1.50 if your Ecuadorian or residing in Ecuador

Don't try to drive in this country, taxi is only about a buck, don't carry large amounts of cash, and be careful what you eat make sure, stay away from the local water, bring some stomach medicine with you.

    Quito, Northern Highlands, Ecuador
Flying out of Quito, the Ecuadorian government charges an exit tax, you must pay this to enter the terminal, they only take cash, no debit or credit cards, at the airport there are a couple ATM's but as you will find out in Ecuador most ATM's don't work with American bank cards, so bring cash with you to the airport. Exit fee is $40 per person.

    Canoa, North Coast, Ecuador
To get here you can take a plane to Manta ($130 roundtrip from Quito, 30 minute flight) or a bus to Manta or Bahia de Caraquez ($10 or 12, 7 or 8 hours), then a taxi to Bahia de Caraquez ($35, 1 1/2 hours) if you arrived to Manta by plane or bus, the taxi will drop you off at the place (a small dock) where you take a boat to San Vicente ($0.30, 10 minutes), and finally you can take a taxi ($4) or a bus ($0.30) or a bike taxi ($4) to go to Canoa (15 minutes). Complicated? haha... but it's totally worth it!!!

    Quito, Northern Highlands, Ecuador
Long streched city ( 45km long 5km wide) in the Andes on 2850m. Four seasons a day, cool at night, sun is very strong when shining. Nice old town with a lot of churches. Pucblic transport very good, almost every 5 minutes a bus on the 3 main lines that are running through Quito and bring you almost everywhere. Else, take a taxi, 1 to 5 dollars, yellow, green, white, red taxi light on the top, red registration label on the door. Two main bus terminals for long distance connections, Terminal Terrestre in the south and Ofelia in the north. New town (Mariscal) is the place for tourists and partying, you can book tours there, sit in the cafe and get all the informations you need. People are very friendly and helpfull but there are a lot of poor people that need money and as the social security is very bad, they have to get it somewhere else. So, watch your bag, put it in the front in the bus and in crowded places. At night, take a taxi or move in groups. In general, if you get robbed you don't even recognize it until you are looking for it, normally no violence.

I recommend all travelers to take a canoe and plan a trip but not to typical places, but tell the canoe driver to take you to a place where you can see the local life. We did that once and ended up in a marriage in which we had a great party with local people and it was a whole new experience to be in there!
