Avignon, Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur, France
Avignon, city of the Popes, is also famous for its bridge. Thus, you need to visit the bridge, the Popes Palace and the walls. If you can, try to make it during the Theatre festival, when the city is alive with activity!

A trip back in history for anybody interested in the middle ages - this is a medeival town! The people are friendly, and from the gardens at the palais des papes you get an amazing view...despite the climb on a hot day. The only down side, is that the sewerage system is totally inadequate during the tourist season, and the whole place stinks. This shouldn't bother medieval enthusiasts though ;)

A short walk from the city across the river is the town of Villeneuve-les Avignon. http://www.villeneuvelesavignon.fr/tourisme/gb/index.asp. It is a lovely quiet little village.

OK, I know France is considered the land of l'amour (love that is), but Avignon truly does have an incredible romantic feel about it. You don't need a significant other to enjoy it though. The great architecture, history and picturesque quality of the city are enough to warrant a visit. If nothing else, it's worth visiting the only seat of the Pope that ever existed outside of Rome itself; the Palais des Papes is a great back drop to any adventure.

Avignon, Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur, France
Beautiful town, famous for its medieval popes and, more recently, as a subject in the French children's song "Sur le Pont d'Avignon" (I only mention it because I couldn't get it out of my head the whole time I was there. So annoying!)
Definitely best time to visit is the summer - while the internationally famous Avignon Festival is on. Great theatre and dance performances - both as part of the official festival and throughout the town streets.

Just take your time wandering about the streets of Avignon. The ancient streets, the courtyards of the private mansions, the renovated facades are charming! Don't miss the Antiquaire Quarter, the Place de l'Horloge or the Chemin de Ronde which will take you to the Rocher des Doms. From the top of the ramparts you can understand why the site was chosen for a fort. Avignon stands high above the vast plains of the Rhone River and is the strategic point of the whole valley.
