Lyon, nice historical and modern city of France near the Alpes. Worth a one day or two day trip. Has been THE centre of textile trade you also see in architecture of the old town; Has a nice little tram system quit modern... you can leave the car outside the town. If weather is fine have a day trip in the alpes for skiing or walking.

In the area there are rests from the 2nd century BC's settlements. Banking and trading activities that made possible the construction of these wonderful buildings were transferred to the other river bank at the beginning of the 18th century as the city of Lyon grew and developed, incorporating what had before been just villages. They became the most modern and popular parts of Lyon afterwards. A couple of centuries of gloom for the 'Vieux Lyon' (the part of the city that once was fashionable) followed. There were even plans to demolish the area. But 'Vieux Lyon' was classified as a protect area in 1964 and thus preserved for the following generations.

Lyon is a wonderful city to live in.
If you go there for a visit go up to the Church at the top of Fourvière and admire a magnificient view (for those who don't feel like walking all the way a small train will take you to the top).
After going down, walk around the little streets of the vieux Lyon and check out some of the shops and pubs.
If you have children with you, I suggest going to the Tete d'Or parc and its zoo (free !), with its lions (if you're lucky they might even roar), giraffes, elephants, monkeys...

Very nice city, with an beatiful airport. It's a very divided city, with a very large variety of architectures across the town.

Gastronomic capital of France...more than Paris in fact... so, although there is lots to see in Lyon, focus on eating...
