In Fussen, is the most beautiful Castle, in my opinion, in the world. It is really something worth seeing, especially in the winter. It's a bit pricey, but you definitely will not be disappointed. Most of the hotel rooms give you a view of either Neuschwanstein, or the other castle, Schwangau. You learn some historical things, see tourists from all over the world (so you don't need to know German!), and there's great, traditional German food (as well as other choices). Out of all the places I've seen, Neuschwanstein was my favorite in the world!

Some of us like to travel to what I like to call the far side of nowhere. And no place in Germany (with the possible exclusion of Oberstoppel Unterstoppel) qualifies better for that denomination than Füssen. Some 40 miles from Füssen the highway ends. Literally. To your left there's a six lane highway, to your right is a field. With cows.
So why on earth go to Füssen ? History-sensitive people have one reson, musical actors have another. History-sensitive musical actors therefore have two reasons to go there. Füssen sports an ultra modern musical theatre, so musical actors tend to show up from time to time begging for work (what they usually and euphemistically call "auditioning"). The theatre is situated at the "even further side of nowhere". Enough said.
Fortunately the somewhat excentric king Louis II of Bavaria (not to be mistaken for the King Louie from "Jungle Book") chose this place to build two castles. Why the reference to "Jungle Book" ? Well, "JungleBook" refers to Disney and what is one of the most wellknown icons of Disney ? The Magic Kingdom Castle. And THAT is based upon the fairytale castle Louis II built in Füssen and called Neuschwanstein (New Swan Stone Castle). This place is either beautiful or kitschy. Depends on your taste. Whatever your taste one description fits both tastes : impractical. There are no two rooms on the same floor, some rooms have no doors nor windows, others are too small to get into, there's a cave on the fourth or fifth floor, the whole thing is some kind of weird tribute to beauty with complete disregard for practicality. And that makes it so enticing.
And that is why Füssen is worth a visit.
But stay away from the tourist traps at the foot of the hill.
