Third Reich Munich, Secrets of the Nazi Capital This is a great way to see Hitler's rise to power which was centered in and around Munich. Hitler called is the "Capital of the Movement." You will see on this walking tour the founding of the Nazi Party and the infamous streets where some of the darkest stories of human history took root and grew into Hitler's dictatorship. When Iwas in Munich it was for the Oktoberfest celebrations however I took the time to see the attractions and its dark history of this city. The walking tour is great, as you are actually walking in the buildings where the Nazi meetings were held and you can really feel the city. If you have a short time in this city, or you have to drink more at the Oktoberfest, this is a great way to see at the Oktoberfest, this is a great way to see the city, and it is well worth it on a budget.

Stay in the tent hostel and sit around the camp fire drinking beer and singing songs. You'll meet loads of interesting people!

Don't go during Oktoberfest. Yes, it is fun, but once you've seen a big fair-type atmosphere with rides for the kids and booth after booth of souveniers, food, coffee, etc., you get the idea of what Oktoberfest is really all about.
Also during Oktoberfest hotels triple -- yes triple -- in prices. We paid 300 Euro per night for a regular $80 US a night room. After Oktoberfest that same room was 65 Euro per night.
Love, love, MUNICH. It is absolutely fabulous and beautiful everywhere you go.

If you are planning to go to Oktoberfest in Germany, i'd recommend going with a tour, i went with busabout and it was a great decision because ALL the accommodation gets booked out, they actually pre book a lot of it! They also reserve some tables in the main tents, lowenbrau, etc.
A few unprepared friends who didn't have accom were forced to sleep in tents and its freezing at night! Also if you are going to Ok, i'd also recommend getting there early or late, on the first day, some people waited HOURS to get into the tents, we went around to the back of the tents where you could either bribe security 20 euro or wait until there was so many people they did a "ram raid" in! Always tip the waitresses "beer wenches" because if you tip them very well on the first couple of rounds they will come back to your table often, and you cant get served beer whilst standing (unless you're in the "pig pen" where you aren't allowed underpants!)

Here's a must-do on a weekday in München: have a picnic in the Viktualienmarkt (market). It's a fun afternoon and a cheap lunch at the same time. Here's how you do it:

    1. Find a fruit stand. Get some berries, grapes, figs, whatever your pleasure.

    2. Find a cheese stand and pick up your favorite cheese.

    3. Find a sausage stand and pick up something spreadable - Leberwurst should do the trick.

    4. Find a bread stand and pick up a quarter loaf.

    5. Grab an empty table in the biergarten area (you'll see it). Make sure the table doesn't have a tablecloth on it.

    6. Go up the the beer stand and get yourself a liter of beer.

    7. Prost!

This tip is a bit naughty, but you don't really need a ticket to ride the U-Bahn in Munich. You should, but you don't have to. The way it works is, you buy the ticket at the machine, then you get it stamped at the entrance. It's all automated. There's no gate blocking your entry if you don't have a ticket. There's no one checking. Throughout our six-day stay on our first trip, we only bought tickets on our first day, and rode around for free the rest of the week. We only saw someone get stopped for not having a ticket once. The guard told them to go buy one, and that was the end of it. No fines or anything. He never even stuck around to see if the person actually bought one. And he didn't see Greg and I walk right by without tickets.

If you're planning on visiting Munich for Oktoberfest (which should be on every beer lover's bucket list), you really need to book your hotel at least 6 months in advance, minimum, because 6 million people come to the city every year and there's barely enough accommodation to fit everyone in. Some people book up to 2 years in advance!

Ideally speaking, you'll want to find a place that's stumbling distance from the fest (which is on the Theresienwiese). Around the central train station (the Hauptbahnhoff) is a good location.

One place of note is Wombats Hostel. As hostels go, this is the absolute nicest I've ever stayed in. It's only a 5 or 10-minute stumble from the fest. It's cheap. Also, you don't need to apply the 6 month rule here - in fact, you can't. They don't open up reservations for Oktoberfest until June 1 at noon, local time (so 6 a.m. in New York). I'd recommend catching this place if you can. If you can't Hotel Monaco, nearby, is a nice and cheap option with a good breakfast. But you need to stay 3 nights minimum to reserve a room at Monaco.
