    Antigua Guatemala, Central Highlands, Guatemala
A bit of historic Guatemalan culture, architecture, good restaurants, expensive hotels, bank machines, mountains, and local artisans offering wood work, textiles, crafts, and jewellery. Its a short drive from Guatemala City too - an easy day trip by bus or car.

Even though it is crowded with tourists... DO stick around for some days, because this city is just beautiful.... sounds kliché, but... you'll see yourself. Antigua is the perfect point where to start travelling from and to come back to... close to the capital but much much nicer. prices are really fair and you actually dont have to hassle too much with the bargaining... which might be the case in other places in CA. You can get reasonable hotels for cheap money, but dont book anything in advance, walk around when you arrive, and ask to take a look at the room before booking anything!

If you are itnerested in learning Spanish, this is the place to do it. There are many schools and they will arrange home stays for you so you can practice your Spanish even when not in school. The ONLY drawback is that there are so many foreigners doing the same thing, you could find yourself lapsing into English with them while hanging out in this beautiful city. Also, always carry your camera. Photo opportunities abound everywhere and Guatemalans love to pose.

while i was there, the jungle party hostel (listed in lonely planet) had an armed robbery, so i would advise splurging a few extra $$$ while you're in this town and stay at a guesthouse or more secure spot.

The Hotel Casa Santo Domingo is gorgeous. It's on the pricier side, but definitely worth it!

Plan ahead, but don't stress out. The hotel I was planning to stay at was closed and, thanks to a friend's recommendation, I had The Black Cat hostel as a back up plan. We showed up 10 minutes before the office closed (9pm), so we got very lucky.

Looking back, we probably had more fun and made more friends by staying at the hostel anyway. So again, we were very lucky.

For all traveling to Antigua, I recommend the Pacaya Volcano tour. It's a rigorous hike, but worth it. Take the tour later in the day. The lava flow looks great at sundown. Remember to take a head lamp or flash light. Pants are also recommended. I wore shorts and my shoes kept filling up with rocks and sand.
