If you want to be able to keep in touch with home then buy a local SIM card for your mobile phone (make sure you're phone is unlocked). Texting is very cheap and if you buy an international SIM then making calls is very reasonable too. Getting a SIM card is easy and inexpensive. Be prepared to give a photocopy of your passport plus possibly a passport photo (some places will take a digital one for you) as this is required for the registration process.

If you're going to book a train ticket, be sure to take your passport as this is required by foreigners wishing to make a reservation. Also, in New Delhi station there is a separate ticket office upstairs for foreigners.

be careful of taxi drivers, especially when leaving the airport in the middle of the night. they'll use any excuse not to take you to the place you want to go. they'll invent a story like: "the new indian law on terrorism requires that you first register at the tourist office", or "this hotel is closed/full", or "this hotel is not reachable due to metro construction work", etc. it doesn't matter whether you booked in advance, they'll think of something. and instead they'll take you to a bussiness relative to sign you up for an expensive trip or hotel. their cunning is enormous and since you're probably exhausted they'll take advantage of your vulnarability.

watch out if you wanna cross the roads animals everywhere loads of poverty (heartbreaking) don't leave any money n the hotel when you travel low budget very crowdy I loved it!!!!!
