Orchha, North-Central Plains, India A gem in the centre of India ... reach there by taxi from Jhansi and stay at the Bundelkhand Riverside Hotel if you can (a property of the Maharaja of Orchha now converted into a hotel) ... the rooms have fabulous views of Betwa River and you can just step from them and reach the banks ... do visit the Jehangir Mahal for some intricate architecture and the Lakshiminarayan temple for some really fabulous frescoes ... and the more modest birthplace of the ancient poet Keshav Das housed in school compound and a bit more difficult to find ... worth fixing up the same taxi guy for getting you into Orchha, sightseeing within the city, and any trips out it, if you are going to Khajuraho for instance... Good tip? (+2) Orchha, North-Central Plains, India Orcha is a small town at an hours drive from Jhansi. The town is based on the banks of Betwa River in the Bundelkhand region of Madhya Pradesh, India. The place offers an old fort, the palace and temples. The best part is the tranquility of this place which is not disturbed by too many tourists. The palace also hosts a hotel which is run by MP Tourism. Good tip? (0) Agra, North-Central Plains, India Agra is this great city because there is the famous Taj Mahal! This is a must see sight when in northern India. You will be in awe when you see it! However, the city is very poor and yes there will be asking you to give them some money. However, the hotels are very good there and you really eat fantastic Indian food. It's really a different location then Europe and it's a must see. Good tip? (0) Agra, North-Central Plains, India Definitely go see the Taj Mahal, but see the other mortuary palaces in the area as well, because they are also very interesting. As far as hotels are concerned, while normally I like the Taj chain, the one in Agra is depressing, cold, old, corporate. Good tip? (0) Amritsar, North-Central Plains, India Amristar city in the state of Punjab , India-biggest atraction is Golden Temple(for me it`s more worth to see than Taj Mahal -sorry but this is my opinion)- you can sleep there and eat for free just ask at entrance Good tip? (0) Amritsar, North-Central Plains, India Tourists are usually welcome to stay in the Golden Temple for a donation. Good tip? (0) Agra, North-Central Plains, India be patient if you want to see the Taj!!! but it worths it! Good tip? (0) Fatehpur Sikri, North-Central Plains, India Hi, travellers, Fatepur Sikiri is a nice place to visit for about half day. Taxi will definitely be the easiest way to get there from Agra and it won't not expensive either. But taking Auto Rickshaw from your hotel to the bus stationa and taking local bus from there will also be a great way to see real local people's life. It's nice to have a meal at marketplace, I still have vivid memory of Chapati I had there. It will be an ok idea to hire a local guide if you want to know more about the place. You don't have to pay a lot, it'll be just about 1~2 dollar for you and co travellers if you have any. There are a few guesthouses in Fatepur Sikiri, but most people go there just for half day and come back to Agra. Good tip? (0) Varanasi, North-Central Plains, India if u don't wanna get ur hands dirty with this city stay at the asi ghat which is the clean part of varanasi - university side, good restaurants and accomodation. its 10 min. from the main city by rikshaw 15 ruppi maybe 20. try the yaffa rest. and avoid the haifa rest. in asi ghat. varanasi is the cheapest city for clothes shopping so use it! and if u'r heading to nepal next buy the bus ticket to KTM that includes a guesthouse in sounali and the bus from there to KTM. don't wash in the ganga, it is not only seems dirty it is filthy, carefull - 300 dead and cooked over a fire man are being thrown into the water every 150 seconds. take the boat trip along the river, unless u really need silk or silk sheets or silk clothing don't go with the guys offering u the cheapest and best quality silk at his uncles factory, its the best silk in the world, don't waste it! Good tip? (0) Gurgaon, North-Central Plains, India "Guru Gram" or the village of the Guru has now become a succession of shopping malls and call centers with a few business hotels in the middle of it all. Nothing interesting here if you are not coming for business. The Crown Plaza hotel has got a really good Brazilian restaurant and the Park Premier hotel is a good choice if you have to stay there.
