Panaji, also called Panjim is the capital of Goa, which was a Portuguese colony until 1991, when it became part of India. It is a rather small town and yet there a few thing to be seen without spending too much time though. Panjim is not a place where you would stay, because there are far better places in Goa with nice and cheap Hotels, Hostels and appartments, you just visit the town on a daytrip in combination with Old Goa or maybe a visit of one of the stil many remaining Portuguese Villas, which are open for visit, mainly no entry fee, but a small donation is expected. Some of those villas also rent rooms. Served by a number of airlines: First Choice, Condor, Air India, Air Deccan (now part of Kingfisher), Kingfisher, Go, Spicejet, Jet Airways, IndiGo

try to take a motorcycle taxi at some point on your trip. Make sure of course they are yellow with a state license plate, and you're good to go. Nothing beats traveling through goa at night on the back of a motorcycle.

to travel cheaply, avoid the expensive taxis and rickshaws and take the bus. They arn't as crowded or chaotic as other buses in india, they will pick you up from anywhere as long as you flag them down, and you can generally find some nice people willing to help you figure out the route system.

The Panjim Inn in Panjim is the best place to stay in town.

Don't go for New Years.. don't go there period unless you want to be surrounded by 2,000 people (mostly men and naked Europeans) dancing to electronic and house music in an open field. Plus, there are many hungry children running around begging for food, along with stray dogs and fecal matter that floats by you in the water if you go in (thats not sanitary) Many of the beach "bars" are situated next to small villages that literally use the ocean as a toilet. I don't mean to sound bourgeois but I admit I have my tendancies and in this case they all came out. I did not appreciate being chased by a pack of stray, malnourished dogs in the middle of the night and having to camp out in an internet cafe, thank you very much!

Beautiful place in India, can say like heaven for youngsters. Lots of churches, beautiful beaches, every beach have unique environment, sceneries with full of greeneries, night market for shopping. I have celebrated a new year on 31dec 2005 on Arambol beach, very nice beach, my favorite one.
Best time to go there is Christmas, New Year and Carnivals in February.

Didnt like it here! It was dirty and smelly with crappy shops. The only thing there was to do was to go on a party boat down the river Mandovi or theres a casino boat that runs till 6am, pay 1500 rupees and u get free drinks all night and all u can eat buffet, foods nice and theres also entertainment
