Orchha, North-Central Plains, India A gem in the centre of India ... reach there by taxi from Jhansi and stay at the Bundelkhand Riverside Hotel if you can (a property of the Maharaja of Orchha now converted into a hotel) ... the rooms have fabulous views of Betwa River and you can just step from them and reach the banks ... do visit the Jehangir Mahal for some intricate architecture and the Lakshiminarayan temple for some really fabulous frescoes ... and the more modest birthplace of the ancient poet Keshav Das housed in school compound and a bit more difficult to find ... worth fixing up the same taxi guy for getting you into Orchha, sightseeing within the city, and any trips out it, if you are going to Khajuraho for instance... Good tip? (+2) Shiliguri, Eastern India, India Never take a bus to Siliguri from any part of east India. The roads around are pathetic. Best and cheap option is to take a train to New Jalpaiguri station, only a few kms from the Siliguri town. Its a small town and used as a connecting point to Darjeeling, its famous sister. Siliguri is hot in the summers but the cold hills of darjeeling are not far away. The jeep ride is cheap but could be dizzy and nauseating for some.
Finding a hotel in Siliguri town is very easy. Ask any rickshaw puller to take you to a good hotel. Rates are reasonable and food is okay. Once in Siliguri, don't miss the China Market and the Hong kong market. These twin markets are full of some wonderful stuff - pottery, watches, electronics, gadgets, carpets, shawls, home wear, swiss knives, and thousand types of tid - bits which can just do up the interiors of our home in a wonderful manner. Siliguri is also the connecting point to Gangtok (Sikkim).
One doesn't need to spend more than 1 full day at Siliguri - at the market. Shopping is cheap. Don't miss out on the opportunity to visit both Darjeeling and Gangtok. Be wary of the touts at the bus stand though who could be misleading. Book everything from the hotel tourist support. After 10 pm, stick to the hotel. It's a day place. Good tip? (+1) Dharmsala, Himalayan North, India When you are in Dharamsala, go up to Mcloed Ganj and escape from hectic India. It's about 4 km into the mountains. It's a clean and cousy place where you can relax, drink a beer and even eat a decent pizza if you're tired of eating Indian food every day. Some good hostels also up there! Good tip? (0) Jaipur, Rajasthan, India Go to Amber Fort by elelphant, Stay at Saba haveli it is a small beautiful old home with huge rooms and great amenities, Go to cafe Kooba, Tableue for dinner and B to B for dancing Good tip? (0) Mumbai, Western India, India if you end up in Collaba in Mumbai the true cheap and best is hotel Kishan. and if you need to make a quick buck hang around the mcdonalds each morning at like 8:30 and you can get picked up to be an extra in a bollywood movie, or just walk around the streets long enough and someone will approach you. Good tip? (0) Almora, Himalayan North, India About a half hour drive up the mountains from Almora is a place called Kasar Devi. It's much quieter, the view is spectacular and the little guest house all along the side of the mountain are lovely. I stayed at the flowerhouse and had a love ly room with a fireplace for only 100rps. If you go in January there's hardly anyone there, it's very cold at night but during the day as long as the sun is out you can get away with a t-shirt and jeans. Rent a bike and check out the local roads and smaller dirt ones going through the woods. There are many out of the way interesting temples and small towns to find. Wonderful place to relax and enjoy the Himalayas. Good tip? (0) Mussoorie, Himalayan North, India Mussourie is the honeymoon hang out for locals all over india. Great couple place lots of western activities, it's not really india. About an hour on the road to Chamba there's another smaller quieter place called Danolti. Lovely scenery, not allot of people, great deals on hand woven clothing made right there. Also an interesting restaurant called Andiji's run but a very odd but friendly British chap. I would not rely on him for any services outside of ordering food but he makes for interesting company and if bring him something good to smoke, or a decent set of guitar strings, he'll give you a great tour of the surrounding area in his black ambassador. Very knowledgable guy. He's been living there for about 7 years. Oh the hotels can be rather expensive relative to India but you do get what you pay for. There's horseriding , apple orchards, lots of hiking and if you can find it there's a fabulous back road to thr east of Danolti that will take you back to Dhera Dun. It's amazing driev on bike and if you time it just right you can watch the sunset like 7 or 8 times behind different mountain peaks as you make your way through. There is no where decent to stay on this road until you get to Dher Dun so be prepared to make the whole journey. It's not that long though. Good tip?
