Especially for women: never, ever walk alone in the alleys along Genova Principe's streets. Try to avoid them even if you are in group.
They are a hellish labyrinth and house thieves, prostitutes and all kind of awful personages.
DO NOT take shortcuts. Please always follow the main roads.

the aquarium is beautiful... otherwise the city smells!

In general Genova is not the best place to visit because it is full of immigrants living on the streets and it is quite dangerous even during the day. The only thing worth visiting is the Aquarium and the Marine Museum so if you plan going there do not spend longer than a day staying in the town.
