    Sant Erasmo, Veneto Region, Italy
If you want somewhere cheap to stay, that's peaceful and 25 mins from Venice by waterbus, consider 'The Garden Island' of Sant' Erasmo. I stayed here June 07 for 3 nights, and enjoyed the peace and quiet. I paid 50 euros per night for single room with en suite bathroom and breakfast. Il Lato Azzuro is the BB/ Guest House, with spotless rooms, good local food , friendly helpful staff- surrounded by pleasant gardens/ fields. No TV - instead books/ magazines to read. www.latoazzurro.it A pizzeria/bar and a restaurant, one shop, (haphazard opening hours) A beach, small marina, 1 church, and Maximillion Tower (art gallery) are just about all that is here. Cycle and kayak hire from Lato Azzuro, or cycle hire from near the vaporetto station. Walking around the island is another option. Vaporetto Number 13 from Venice Fondamente Nuova day and night.

Don't stay over night, take the last train back to Mestre. It'll be less than half the price.

Murano is a great place to base yourself when seeing Venice, it's one of the smaller islands in the archipeligo, nice and quiet, easy access by water taxi.

    Mestre, Veneto Region, Italy
This is a great place to stay if you are visiting Venice. It is 10 minutes away from San Marco and the hotels are less expensive. There isn't much to see here though.

The township next to Venice where a lot of Venetians live... most commute daily for work to Venice... not a bad deal for travellers too as Venice hotels are not just expensive but also oftern full ... so if you land there without a booking, head to Mestre for a stay...regular coaches run between Mestre and Venice... Mestre itself is mostly residential but has some nice places to eat and drink... of course, nearby Venice is gorgeous to say the least...

I would say this is one of the most expensive cities, or at least a city with a lot of tourist traps!!! Here I had my expensivest and worst pizza ever! I still cant believe how much they could take for a pizza and a glass of beer! And of course, there were no price list outside the restaurante. And the price for a gondole tour was also a joke, even if that is one of the main reason of seeing Venice and experience a gondole ride, I still didnt spend my money on that. But except the prices, Venice was great. It's so cool that instead of cars everyone has a boat. And the little streets and bridges are really cosy, but be careful not to fall in the water when its dark!!! Or when youre drunk! :) Outside of the "water-area" Venice is'nt really anything special, but the bus prices are cheap and the pizza is better. We found some nice bar street close to our hotel in the Mestre area, wich is located in the other end of the bridge Ponte della Liberta.

Pay attention while you are booking your hotel. 2 stars hotel in Venice means more-less average 4 stars. So, don't waste your money because the accomodation is going to be nice anyway.
