It's worth heading north out of Sapporo into deepest Hokkaido. It is possible to do it as a day trip, but it is better to find a Youth Hostel somewhere.

In febuary is the Saporo Snow Festival - A must see! But be sure to pack warm clothes as it can get quite cold walking around the city all day. Skiing is also very popular there and it has the best ski hills in all Japan.
