There are two great hostels nearby Kyoto Station. One is J-Hoppers (http://kyoto.j-hoppers.com/index.html), about a 15 minute walk from the station. The facilities are clean, and the beds are comfy. The rooms are unisex, but the bunks have curtains, so you have a measure of privacy. The staff is super friendly; I had trouble finding the place, so a staff member came out to find me. 2500 Yen a night.

The other is K's House Kyoto (http://kshouse.jp/kyoto-e/), which is about the same distance from the station in the opposite direction from J-Hoppers. The dorm room prices start at 2500 Yen, with other room options available. It's newer than J-Hoppers, so the facilities are aesthetically nicer, but both are great, in my opinion.

Best place to stay if you are backpacking is the K'S House Kyoto. Pretty good place to stay and well located, clean rooms and very nice and helpful staff, specially those who work at the pub.

Great place for sightseeing. From the station you can get a tour bus for only 4or 5.000 yens and it will take you to the places and one meal included. They also have overnight packages to see the maikos at night.. 10/10 is the score i give.

There's a guesthouse called "Kikokuso" and this is one of the best ryokans asd well as "Yuzuya". The atomsphere of the ryokan is great and people who work there are very kind. It's not that far from Kyoto Station.

If you like it hot, then go to Kyoto in summer! It's incredible! But anyway, the best way to come along in Kyoto is by bike. It's really comfy and you can go everywhere this way. You can rent it in most of the hostels there. And: don't forget to stay in a hostel with tatami.! It's so much fun to feel like the japanese felt before a short time ago...

The best place to stay in Kyoto is for sure the Tani House! This guest house started in 1970; it's a very traditional japanese house and the area is very typical! The owner, Mrs Seiko Tani is very friendly and her guest house provides some bicycles (best way to discover the city). All my family stayed there (from the 70ies) and we all enjoyed a lot the time spent in the Tani House!
