Probably the safest I have ever felt walking down a street at 2 AM. Extremely clean, extremely safe. We landed Dec. 28. The city was dead for a couple of days until New Years festivities. I wouldn't call the Japanese friendly but extremely respectful. The mass transit is extremely efficient, cheap (compared to taxi), and the best way of getting around (especially now that all subway stops are translated into English). The one thing getting use to is eating, especially for those weary exotic foods. However, I found more and more restaurants serving western style dishes (BLAH!!!).
The Imperial Palace is a must, so are the many Shinto shrines. One big treat being in Tokyo during New Years is being greeted by the Emperor at the Imperial Palace.
Would love to return to Japan, preferably Kyoto during Cherry Blossom season.

Traffic Jam everywhere. If you need to go back to the airport, keep a least two hours before the flight take off.

The Salt and Tobacco Museum in Shibuya, Tokyo is an interesting little niche attraction. It's about a 15-20 minute walk from the Shibuya Station. The museum chronicles the development of the salt and tobacco industry starting from the Meiji period (maybe the Edo period?) to the present, with old style vending machines and a collection of past and present cigarette packages from around the world. You can also sample some tobacco processed by hand.

The easiest way to travell is by subway, it is very acurate, clean, safe and easy. A must try is go to a tea ceremony at the nearest tea school, oh and then of course go to a nice sushi resturant. Also a visit to Minon music museam is a must do, it is located on Samon cho, Shinjuku ku. Have fun

Tokyo's address system is really confusing. The number on a building corresponds with when it was built on that street, not it's location. So building 15 could lie next to building 43. Expect to get lost if trying to navigate by yourself!!

Also, try and learn as much Japanese before going as a majority of your run-ins will not (want to?) speak English. Good advice for traveling anywhere really.

SUPER safe, the crime here against tourists is practically non-existent.
