Walk. Spend a lot of time walking. The best way to experience Tokyo is to just get out and take it all in. Also, avoid the trains during commuter hours in the mornings and evenings. This is especially key for women who don't want to be felt up on the train.

You could spend months in Tokyo and barely scratch the surface of what's there, but it's worth the attempt, anyway.
Great food can be found in almost any restaurant, but one in particular worth trying is the Ninja Akasaka, in Akasaka-ku.  A little pricey (expect to pay around $70 / 7000 yen a head), but worth it if you like great food aesthetically prepared and you place a high value on kitsch.
You enter from the street through a discreet door and find yourself in a dimly lit room, with all walls painted black.  A hostess wearing a long black coat gets your name (reservations highly recommended) and then yells "ninja".
A "ninja" waiter will enter from a side door and escort your party through cave-like tunnels and over a bridge which crosses a small "stream" which uses dry ice to produce a bit of fog.  Your ninja will take you to your "cell", where you sit at a low table and order your meal.
Your ninja will bring your meal, broken into several courses, and perform an occasional magic trick between courses.
This restaurant provides a fun experience, and is a great activity if you're showing someone Tokyo for the first time.

Gonpachi - Roppongi. This restaurant was FANTASTIC. Besides the fact that George Bush was taken here by the Japanese Prime Minister (that should not be the reason not to go) but also it was the restaurant that inspired film maker Quentin Tarantino to do the famous fight scene in the restaurant in Kill Bill 1. Now if you have seen the movie and then go to this restaurant you will see the resemblance. The food was outstanding, the servive was top of its class and the atmosphere was great. You do need to book as it is quite popular. It is worth every $$$ on the quality of food. 5 star.

Also Pünktlich sein!
