Everybody says Mexico City is an extremly dangerous city, but from my experience I can tell you, that as long as you don't run around in expensive clothes and shoes without any jewelry, noboy will do you any harm. Actually it's the opposite: Mexicans are warm hearted people how are very proud of their country, and especially of Mexico City, and like to share their knowledge of it with everybody!

Very important to see, besides the usual things you can read in every guide, are the different markets in different parts of the town (especially the "TEPITO" market. Also very interesting are the little Taco Bars in the streets. Don't think about what to eat. Just eat and then ask!

Go visit Tijuana..it is such a very different place when compared to cities in the United States.

There is a really fantastic new organization called Fundacion En Via (www.envia.org) that is running microfinance tours to help women living around Oaxaca get out of poverty. You meet with local women who are applying for their loans and then En Via uses 100% of the groups' tour fee to give them women interest-free microloans. It is a phenomenal way to get to connect with local women and get a very inside look at life in Oaxaca, and also a concrete way to give back. The best thing I've done in Mexico!

Save time for museum hopping. There are more museums in Mexico City that you could possibly count. We found gallery after gallery just walking down the street. Admission was as little as a dollar.

dont eat the food and haggle when buying stuff

Best place to listen to the Mariachi bands is in the plaza Garibaldi, make sure you go there with local, as it is also a high crime area. Another local place is floating garden of Xochimilco, a must see, again go with locals.
