The thing that I liked the most in Maputo was the incredible fish market.

You go there, buy your fish and the cool thing is that all around the market, you have restaurant where you bring your food, and they cook it for you fro very cheap...

It's been the best fish I've eaten in my entire life so far

Despite being a capital, Maputo is not that bad to walk around compared to some other capitals... especially near the sea... check out its famous historical hotel that also served as a political base and watch the photos on its walls... and have a tea or drink in its sea-facing gardens...

The most famous place for backpackers here is Fatima's Place, but be aware of the shuttle that they offer to Tofo Beach isn't really a shuttle. The just pick you up at the backpackers, really early, and drop you at a taxi rank: You're going to be in a regular minibus, or chapa (as they say in Mozambique) for 8 long hours until Tofo. And Fatima's place charges 600 meticais for that, when the chapa is only 500. They take 100 mtc from you for a small ride, avoid that and do it for your own if you can.

If you're going to Mozambique by bus (specially from Johannesburg), remeber to get your Mozambican visa before the departure. Many of the bus companies won'nt even allow you to get into the bus going to Mozambique if you don't have the visa. It takes some time for it to be obtained at the border post, so, to avoid problems with the bus and/or driver, get it in advance.

If you're at Maputo, and specially if you're a brazilian tourist, homesick, missing all that food that you love, the unique barbecue with farofa and rice with black beans, Maputo has a place that can help you out: Rodizio Real.
Ask any taxi driver, they know where the place is. The price is a little bit high, around 800 Mtc for a Rodizio (wich is the traditional way of eating barbecues in Brazil: you pay a fixed amount and can eat all that you want), but the food is great and the meat cuts are exactly the same ones found in Brazil. Picanha, alcatra, maminha...

Enjoy your meal!
