Noumea, New Caledonia
Pick up a little french before you go and practice speaking it. The people of New Caledonia speak very fast compared to those in France and there is still places where english isn't spoken (particularly the best restaurants away from the tourism!) While the main land (noumea) has great shops, restaurants and cafes, you must visit the outer islands like the Ile de pines! It is so beautiful and not to be missed!

Noumea, New Caledonia
Learn some basic French before arriving in Noumea, as most of the locals do not understand English! The taxi service is very unreliable so be prepared to catch a bus. Everything is ridiculously expensive so make sure that you're stocked up with Pacific Francs.

Work out the exchange rate early on because you dont realise how much you spend is actually going on food and then you end up with no money for the cool things you would like to buy.  And DONT try getting the 'meanest' tan on the first day by not putting on sunscreen and sitting out in the sun all day! Lobster aint the look
