Christchurch has an excellent bus system. Get your self a Metro card from the exchange in the city centre, most fares are $1.90 on the card and you get free transfers for two hours.

When I was backpacking in New zealand I sold my car in Christchurch @ the carmarket, it was shit, spended 7 days in that garage barely seeing sunlight. I bought my mitsubishi pajero in auckland for 3000 NZ$ sold it for 1800NZ$ After al it's been worth it to buy a car, it's a whole a lot cheaper then renting one. it was good fun of roading with a jeep in NZ, but if you want to be comfortable better buy a mini van, it's mutch easier to sell despare of the mechanical problems which possibly appear.

Christchurch is quite a pleasant city to travel in. Travellers do not have to worry about accommodation because there are heaps of motels and backpackers around the city. It is pretty easy as well to travel within the city. Chirstchurch has got a pretty organised public transport system. The busses can take you to anywhere you want.

Christchurch is beautiful, the Cathedral stands tall in the middle of the square.
The Restaurant tram is a lovely set up, you hop on and go round the square and have dinner on board, very relaxing.
Buses are excellent, there is a tram that takes you round in the day time if you wish and stops at the old uni.

I recomment the Heritage Hotel, very historic.

Chch is large and difficult to navigate through, better to try stick to the outside with the big line of roundabouts when trying to get from Dunedin to Wellington.

Transportation in New-Zealand: rent a camper-van! You can drive both Islands, get to a lot of different places and enjoy the most beautiful sights while getting there. Also, you can take a nap whenever you're suffering from the jetlag. :-)

Travel by buses in New Zealand, it's cheap and you'll get around very easy... the other opportunity, is buying a car - that's no problem in NZ and also cheap, if I compare it with other countrys.

    Tips at the airport,

Christchurch airport is a small airport and for International travellers, the only concern will be the restrictions in carrying in food.

First, it is not that all food are not allowed, just meat, meat products and agricultural products. I think simply anything that can grow or can carry germs are a concern.

So things like hiking boots, golf clubs etc are also checked for. The main thing to do is DECLARE!. they are nice about it if you do declare,.

The first check is actually when you are waiting at the carousel. Dogs will sniff for food. Even if your bag was used to carry food before the dogs will pick it up. So if you are using old bags used for food be ready for it to be checked.

Then you go through the channed. If unsure, then say so. One thing i did once was blamed my mother in law in case she sneaked in some food and i told that before the check. The officer actually took me through the process so if anything was found then at least i cn say i was not sure!.

Generally they are strern but nice here, mych more pleasat than Australia

Christchurch a is great city just to walk through, take in the history and the Beautiful gardens. You can get a day pass on the tram which will take you to all the main sightseeing attrcations. They include the Botanic Gardens, Art Centre (which has a great Market on Saturdays), The art Gallery, Cathedral Square and much more. You can get Guided walking tours around the City. This is something that I would strongly suggest becasue you get inside information on the History and culture os the City. Day trips from Christchurch can include: Hanmer springs, Akaroa Lyttlton, Waipra Wine country, Or the Mt Hutt Ski Feild. One of the Best train trips in The world Also departs from Christchurch. the Tranz Alpine Train. This Takes you up into Arthurs Pass National Park. Best done in winter this trip takes you through the southern alps with great veiws of mountains , valleys and alot of snow if you are lucky. They run really good winter specials, but i the Summer it can be quite costly.
