    Oswiecim, Malopolska Region, Poland
As far as I know, the cheapest place to stay in Oświęcim is Hotel Kamieniec (see http://www.hotel-kamieniec.com.pl/). Public transport to and from the hotel might be a pain (the buses are very rare), but the Auschwitz museum is within walking distance and if you want to go anywhere else you may find that the price of accomodation + taxi might still come out cheaper and more convenient than spending the night elsewhere. As long as you're not going outside of Oswiecim it's unlikely that a taxi trip will cost you more than around 15zl, so keep that in mind when you calculate costs.
Most people, however, stay in Kraków (which has a lot more tourist sites than Oświęcim) and take the bus to the Auschwitz museum from there.

As for the Auschwitz museum itself it is one of few places in my life which I left and thought "everyone should see this" and everyone I know who has been there says the same. Even if you're not the sort of tourist that does museums and tourist sites you will not regret coming to this one.

It's no use in travelling here by car. It's really easy to find accomodation. Be prepared for loads of international tourists students. Bars and restaurants are much more expensive in the city centre, so try finding some in the suburbs ( they also have good quality). If you like paryting, all main clubs are around the Market Square. Locals are friendly and there shouldn't be any problem with communicating with them with stuff in the restaurants, bars, hotels etc. in English.

It's easy to see why this is a popular destination. Krakow is a wonderful place, full of life and fun. Music and dance hits you as you enter the main square. The Wawel castle sits by the side of the Wisla river. A daytrip to nearby Auschwitz is a sobering experience, but a must-do if you visit here. I didn't have chance to visit the Salt Mine, so can't express an opinion on that.

Krakow is Poland's ace I think... spend time here... other than taking in its historical importance (though it was not razed like Warsaw was in WW-II, it has the most haunting Nazi camps nearby in Auschwitz and Birkenau)... the city is beautiful ... its central square Rynek Glowny is among Europe's largest and liveliest and most photogenic, with a market place building within the square ... and the restaurants, cafes and shops lining the square offer good treats ... especially check out the jazz clubs here that really liven up in the night with good bands...Jagiellonian University here is famous and worth a visit... and there are numerous excursions you can take from here ... into the salt mines, the Zakopane resorts and some nearby cities ... stay at the University-linked Nawojka if you can ... eat at the joints in the central square or in the many streets flowing off the square...
