Bialystok, Mazovia & Podlasie Region, Poland
One of the things you have to see in Bialystok is Branicki Palace (called Versaille of the North) with the garden (designed after Versaille gardens) and the park around - wheter it's cold or warm you will always meet people there ;)

Lodz, Mazovia & Podlasie Region, Poland
Lodz has bad train connections with both Warsaw and Krakow. If you are planning to go to Lodz from one of these cities, take a bus, a plane or rent a car. When in Lodz, use trams, you can reach most of the interesting places with them and they're not expensive. If you are a foreign citizen, be sure to buy a normal fare ticket, as you are probably not eligible for a reduced fee one (check it up if you are a student).

I don't want to write a tip for Warsaw... I want to write a tip for the small mountain village in South Poland I passed through once only once, and could never find again because I never noted the name... and the roads in Poland are notoriously confusing (not to mention dangerous - do NOT begin a road rage contest with a Polish truck driver on his own turf - you will LOSE). That place was one of the most unbelievable little pockets of beauty I've ever seen, stone cottages two stories and higher, a babbling brook with cows just wandering about the place - I swear I saw a black haired Tess of the D'Urbevilles out getting ready to milk them. Idyllic, but like all idyllic scenes - it's be ruined if you stopped and tried to fit into it. Anyway my tip on Warsaw: don't get stuck in rush hour traffic. In fact, don't drive into town at all, go by foot and just find yourself a nice place to stay... then walk out at night and meet all the lovely people - they make eye contact! They say hello to strangers!

Krakow, Mazovia & Podlasie Region, Poland
Krakow is Poland's ace I think... spend time here... other than taking in its historical importance (though it was not razed like Warsaw was in WW-II, it has the most haunting Nazi camps nearby in Auschwitz and Birkenau)... the city is beautiful ... its central square Rynek Glowny is among Europe's largest and liveliest and most photogenic, with a market place building within the square ... and the restaurants, cafes and shops lining the square offer good treats ... especially check out the jazz clubs here that really liven up in the night with good bands...Jagiellonian University here is famous and worth a visit... and there are numerous excursions you can take from here ... into the salt mines, the Zakopane resorts and some nearby cities ... stay at the University-linked Nawojka if you can ... eat at the joints in the central square or in the many streets flowing off the square...

Vegetarians should definitely check out Biosfera. They also got vegan dishes and extremely friendly staff. :) It's just a couple of stops south from the central metro stop so easy access.

Bialystok, Mazovia & Podlasie Region, Poland
If you like to eat something typical for eastern Poland, you must find a small snack-bar at Raginisa Street (destination Suprasl, opposite to the cemetery). The local looks like from the 70's. There's only one dish to order - so-called "kiszka": grounded potatoes with bacon, fried in a gut (like sausage). Very fat, but delicious! Don't forget to order a clabber with!
