San Juan, Puerto Rico
Realize that downtown Old San Juan does not have the traditional nightlife of a Caribbean tourist area...it has Salsa clubs, which are SO much more fun! Unlike bars in many touristy towns, the locals will come out and party with the tourists at these bars. Get a Heiniken (or three) and learn to salsa!

Photos of the doors and windows in Old San Juan have been published to death...try and get photos of the gorgeous downtown with a new angle! I enjoy looking at street scenes in Old San Juan rather than individual buildings; you can often capture the pastel colors of the city better this way than by photographing individual houses.

US citizens don't need a passport to come here, use US dollars, and their cell phones will even work! I recommend Puerto Rico to springbreakers who either don't have passports or want to go somewhere a bit different. The beaches are incredible, food is delicious, and you don't waste time going through customs on the way home!

San Juan is awesome. There is a lot of history dating back 500 years! There are some tips you need to survive it, though. Handle only a limited amount of cash, as there are theives around every corner. As long as you are polite with the locals, they will treat you with care. Wear your walking shoes. Be sure to visit El Morro and La Capilla, and all the shops along the strip. And just to be safe, do NOT venture to La Perla unless you want to get shot at. If you follow these tips, you will have an awesome time.

el morro (former defensive castle in the old part of the city) is my favorite place. the whole "viejo san juan" is fascinating. try to go to the governor´s palace (they still use the original colonial building for that). being from santo domingo it was very interesting to see how different colonial architecture is in different caribbean cities (the same is true with havana).
