Check out some of the islands surrounding it, they have nicer beachs. But, the mesquitos are so bad that you have to use a military issue bug repellant.

San Juan is awesome. There is a lot of history dating back 500 years! There are some tips you need to survive it, though. Handle only a limited amount of cash, as there are theives around every corner. As long as you are polite with the locals, they will treat you with care. Wear your walking shoes. Be sure to visit El Morro and La Capilla, and all the shops along the strip. And just to be safe, do NOT venture to La Perla unless you want to get shot at. If you follow these tips, you will have an awesome time.

Don't leave your underwater camera in a public restroom! It won't be there when you go back to get it =(
