mediterranean feel, squats arts, an ancient fortress and a heavy load of history. only went there for a day but would have loved to stay a week..

The women museum (musée des femmes) on Ile de Gorée is very interesting, especially when you ask for a guide. It's right in front of the slave house (maison des esclaves).

N'hésitez pas à lancer une pièce aux boat divers... Ils plongeront pour la récupérer.

good surf spot between the small island and the bay of Yoff. there are many sea urchins, so shoes are a good idea. Once you got one in your feet, swim to the island and walk ophill asking for the 'doctor': have fun! it will hurt like hell and once back in Dakar you should check your last tetanus shot...

the second great beach to see in yoff is the long one: have a chat with locals and let you invite to join a tea cermony, or join one of the countless beach soccer matches

Charming christian church in the city center. Just turn 200 m from the road leading from Dakar (on your right you'll certainly see it)

While the island is historically interesting, the experience is marred by annoying sales people who will do everything to extract cash from you. I ended up speaking only Serbian and highly annoying one of the women, much to my delight. Food in the dock area sucks, as do the many flies who are all over the place. However, there is some charm in the desolated buildings, plus, after Dakar, this is a welcome change.

A must for any visit to Dakar! It's very simple to take the ferry out to the island, and the ferry trip itself allows one a nice view from afar of Dakar. Goree is tranquil and peaceful, a wonderful change from Dakar! The former slave house closes from lunchtime until mid-afternoon (and open an hour later on Friday than the rest of the week), so you will want to plan your ferry and visiting schedule around that daily period of closure.
