Swanky, metropolitan, sprawling and dangerous ... though apartheid is over, black and white areas are pretty distinct ... and some of the former can indeed be dangerous ... don't venture there alone or at night ... guns and murders and lootings are common ... and richer folk often have elaborate security arrangements .... Joburg is among the world's top crime spots .... in several ways, it is like Africa's New York ... plenty of commerce, conferences and contrasts, high-rise and low-rise, wealth and poverty ... lots to see and eat and do .... and the central transport hub for the region...

Johannesburg is Mountain View alike...the buildings..looks the same but peole are not mixed. If you go out from Johannesburg be carefull what you eat...I got really sick the last day

Ask your hotel to recommend a place to eat local, traditional food. What you are looking for is boerewors (farmer's sausage)and mieliepap (a stiff cornmeal porridge that will remind Southerners in the US of grits and Italians will think polenta). To go with that you want some tomato bredie (stewed tomato with onion). Sosaties (a marinated curried lamb kebab) are a sinfully delicious local favorite. To top it off, you are looking for melktert (a custard pie with cinnamon). The local pancakes are also delicious, they are thin as crepes and come sprinkled with cinnamon sugar and a slice of lemon. Squeeze the lemon on the pancake and you are in heaven!

Best tip: Fly in, stay in the airport and fly out to whatever safari you're heading to as soon as you can. Jburg is NYC '75 times five for crime. Scary city.

Johannesburg can be a very dangerous place to be. The city center is useable during the day but make sure you leave before it gets late.

The suburbs are better for shopping malls and small restaurants.

Don't walk on the streets, it's to dangerous.
