I love Jo'burg! High crime rate, yes. Friendly people, yes yes. Cheap alcohol, yes yes yes! Go figure. Some of the locals would tell you scary stories about people's cars getting hijacked, people getting robbed/killed etc., but hey, don't these things happen everywhere? Most people would tell you how much they love living there. Just be more alert and cautious wherever you go like what you should do in any unfamiliar places. Those barbwires and 6-foot walls are there for a reason. Perhaps I can't generalise, but I do feel a tit bit safer being an Asian (and do not look like a rich Japanese or Korean) :-). If you have some time to spend in Jo'burg, don't miss out the Apartheid Museum and the Origins Centre at the Wits University. They are two of the coolest museums I've ever been - particularly the Origins Centre. Great value for money, and check out the interactive display on the floor! If you are going to Kruger (which you should definitely do) and check out the Big 5, don't forget to stop by Nelspruit, the God's Window and try the pacakes at the Pancake House in the small town of Graskop. Cheers is another good place to eat too. It's no doubt that South Africa has the best food in the world!!

It is pretty cheap to drink and eat in Joburg, but most of the restaurants can be found in shopping centers.

The Butchers Shop Grill

Shop 30, Nelson Mandela Square
Johannesburg 2146

Neighborhood : Sandton For the Finest in Meat Dishes: The floors here are coated with sawdust in the spirit of a traditional butcher shop, but heavy wooden furnishings give this steakhouse a clubby feel. Diners sit surrounded by an estimated ZAR1.5 million worth of wine stacked about the restaurant. All available cuts are displayed in the central butchery, an indication that this restaurant is truly serious about meat. The menu features grain-fed South African beef and more unusual game meats, all aged under controlled conditions in on-site cold rooms. Children under the age of 14 years are not allowed

Ask your hotel to recommend a place to eat local, traditional food. What you are looking for is boerewors (farmer's sausage)and mieliepap (a stiff cornmeal porridge that will remind Southerners in the US of grits and Italians will think polenta). To go with that you want some tomato bredie (stewed tomato with onion). Sosaties (a marinated curried lamb kebab) are a sinfully delicious local favorite. To top it off, you are looking for melktert (a custard pie with cinnamon). The local pancakes are also delicious, they are thin as crepes and come sprinkled with cinnamon sugar and a slice of lemon. Squeeze the lemon on the pancake and you are in heaven!

I was in South Africa when I was working in Pan American Airlines. I got the last flight when Pan American and US decide to cancel all flights to South Africa. I was a short vacation because this situation. I was only 3 days still was a wonderful experience. People were polite but not to friendly. At that time were a lot of riots ect. Now the country is diferent. I send a lot of clients and they come back very happy. The northern suburbs of Jo'burg are fairly safe for shopping. The weekend roodtop market at Rosebank Mall is wonderful for getting arts crafts, good places to eat also. Lots of ATMs available. As usual in South Africa always check the machine and use ATMs in well lit populated areas. The rooftop market has lots of artists selling their work and regular special music. Further north is Sandton Mall with Nelson Madela Square in the middle, not very clearly sign posted so ask the way. Good restaurants and shops. A fantastic deli in Sandton to meet your taste from home needs. Always only bring the money you need, keep your handbag under your arm as crime is rife in SA. Rosebank Sandton are safe providing you keep your head screwed on.

There's not much good thai food in this town, but try the thai restaurant at Nelson Mandela Square in Sandton. It's pretty authentic, spicy, and good! And the prices are reasonable.
