Talk to locals regarding high risk areas and try to keep to main roads. Car-jacking is a major threat, especially at night, and public transport is risky, so it's best to hire a car or travel by a recognised coach company.

If you're backpacking and specially if you're coming from Cape Town, be aware that Johannesburg is quite different from the mother city. Far more dangerous, public tranportation here is a little bit difficult for tourists (the minibus drivers don't seem to be as friendly as the ones from Cape Town), and regular cabs are way more expensive than anywhere else in SA.
