The one thing that everyone kept reminding me of when I first landed in Johannesburg was to 'be aware of your surroundings and to be careful when walking about the streets'. I was fortunate enough to have a pleasant stay there and honestly, it seemed to be very safe to me. But nevertheless, I still travelled around the city in a group and I never once left the hotel grounds on my own (even if it was just for a quick snack or a visit to the local grocery store). All in all, despite the numorous stories I've heard of people being mugged in Johannesburg, I was lucky enough to have met many friendly locals there, and I would definitely try to return one day. ps: once again, just to be on the safer side, try to travel around in groups and especially if you're a woman, have at the very least one of your male friend/family member to accompany you on the streets.
