Basel is Switzerland's number three city after Geneva and Zurich. It is located on the river Rhine close to the border with France and Germany and is primarily German speaking. In fact the nearby airport serves three cities in three different countries (Basel-Freiburg-Mulhouse), made possible these days due to the Schengen cross-border agreement. There are dozens of museums to visit (the Kunst Museum is well worth seeing), and a walk along the Rhine near Das Munster cathedral is a must. A trip to Solitude Park is a relaxing experience if you want to read a book and get some peace and quiet. The town obviously attracts people from France and Germany so there is a good cosmopolitan mix. It's nothing spectacular, but worth visiting.

the YMCA Hostel in Basel is a lovely and comfortable hostel, cheap and they even give you towels!
