This is a very basic city. Not really for tourists. This is where Tunisians live and we stayed here with our friend. It's easy to get lost in the twisty, narrow streets. But once you know your way around,it's very interesting and the tunisians make you feel at home. We made lots of friends here and were welcomed into lots of homes, even though there was a language barrier as we speak little arabic or french. This didn't seem to matter though and we got by on sign language.

I used Sousse as a base whilst exploring other towns in the area and thought it was great. There's some good accommodation here and the old city walls and the souq are pretty cool. Its easy to do day trips of to Monastir, Kairoun and El Jem from here.

Hammam Sousse, Central Tunisia, Tunisia
Typische Touristengegend, die mittlerweile an Charme verloren hat. Immer noch schön, sind die Teil der verbliebenen Altstadt.

If you will be in this lovely sea-side town in winter, be sure to bring warm clothes! It may look like southern California, but the night air off the water can get down right nippy. Hand-warmers might also be a good idea.

It's very hard for Americans to not make eye contact and smile, even at strangers. We feel we are being impolite if we do not. However, a woman making eye contact and smiling is perceived by Tunisian men as comming on to him. Practice looking at people's faces without looking them in the eye. Noses, chins, and cheeks are good areas to focus on instead. Good custody of your eyes and conservation of your smile can go a long way to avoiding unpleasant to dangerous situations.
