Travel Tips - Sightseeing & AttractionsGlasgow, Scotland, United Kingdom Ok, this might sound weird but it eventually isn't. One the best places to go see in Glasgow is te Necropolis. Yes, the cemetary. It develped on a hill and goes all the way up from the bottom. There's a walkway to follow, and if you take it you'l never feel scared or anything, actually you might feel "in peace". Haha. Once you get to the tp, I assure you one of the best views of the whole city. I've been there by day and by night, and when its dark, the smoke from the chimnies make it even more worth seeing. Good tip? (0) Glasgow, Scotland, United Kingdom Be aware of your meals at night time! Most of the restaurants work with apointments, so it is very hard to get into a good restaurant. Ther is one very good one, more Tapas style, the name is something with florantina... I will look it up and add it later! It is a blue restaurant, with a bit of white, nearby a busstop.
We will not suggest the Euro-hotel. It is a bit durty, you don't get the things you pay for, there is not a lot to do, and at night time the room downstairs is a pub... If you are with more than 3 people the towels are not included... If you just stop by, and only be there one night you might can stand it. Breakfast is ok.
It is a very alive city with a lot of pubs and nightclubs.
Easily get lost... there are things to see, but we didn't found them!
Walking is the best way to get around, you can also go by bus, but it cost money that you can save by walking, that way you also see more. Busses are ok, and the prices are fine Good tip? (0) Glasgow, Scotland, United Kingdom Favourite cafe: Cafe Gandolfi (and the Merchant City is great for shops and architecture); hidden history - the Merchant City which got its money from tobacco and the slave trade; favourite museum: Burrell Collection (and take a walk through Pollok Park to visit the Highland cattle and Pollok House; great cakes: Pollok House; favourite shop: Waterstone's book shop in Sauchiehall Street (you can spend all day in there!); good places to meet in that part of Glasgow: cafe at Waterstone's or the CCA; good films: Glasgow Film Theatre or try the multiplex UGC on West Nile Street; interesting theatre - try the Citizens; cutting edge (or completely barmy) art stuff - the Tramway is a must (also good place for kids, for sitting/eating/reading, and for fresh air in the Hidden Gardens). For a different experience, go to the university area: Byres Road, for shops and cafes, and Kelvingrove Museum (one of the most visited in Britain). For Mackintosh - there's the house at the Hunterian Museum Art Gallery - and amazing Glasgow Art School - for real fans, though, the Hill House at Helensburgh is a must! Good tip? (0) Glasgow, Scotland, United Kingdom Ibrox Stadium is a must for any Rangers Fan. The tube has a stop at it... too easy.. Good tip? (0) Glasgow, Scotland, United Kingdom leuke stad, veel bier, gezellige sfeer Good tip? (0) Glasgow, Scotland, United Kingdom a tour of the city chambers is free and its really beautiful inside (its on george square so you can't miss it)! Good tip? (0) Glasgow, Scotland, United Kingdom Spend a day in the Pollok Country Park. Look at the Burrell Collection, enjoy the nature in the Pollock House Gardens. Take a photo of the highland cattles and the waterfall. Good tip? (0) Glasgow, Scotland, United Kingdom Downtown Glasgow near the main train station and the tourist information center is a really cool area where live music is usually playing. It's a big square with statues and whatnots that you can see from the tourist info center, and they have a really good information center so I'd definitely stop by there. Good tip? (0) Glasgow, Scotland, United Kingdom Stay at the Spires on Bothwell Street and shop on Sauchiehall Street Good tip? (0) Glasgow, Scotland, United Kingdom Glasgow is a battle-scarred yet delightful and compact city that is easy to explore. The city is basically on a grid and a good map will get one around quite fine.
Take a 2 hour guided bus tour of the city; it was only 9 Scottish pounds sterling. Transportation is very cheap.... so cheap that I only used taxis while there. Their public transportation system is nice and clean. British and Scottish pounds can be used interchangeably; the Royal Bank of Scotland and HSBC are major banks there. Everything is cheaper in Scotland than in England (especially London).
Stay at any hotel EXCEPT the Alexander Thomson hotel . It is the most disgusting hotel I've ever stayed at in my entire life. The Holiday Inn Glasgow, where I switched to after leaving that horrible hotel, is pricey but worth the money.
For good comedy, go to The Stand. In addition, mid-October to mid-November is Glasgay, the month for lesbians and gays. The Scottish in general are a feisty yet delightful and funny bunch. And boy can they drink.
Women, be careful going outside alone at night. A drunk man tried to accost me in front of a restaurant right next to the disgusting hotel. (I wound up having to dodge inside the restaurant and ate, much to my chagrin. Didn't want to spend extra money. But the food was good - Thai Orchid restaurant.)
I'd love to return to Glasgow and hopefully get to Edinburgh while there. Good tip? (0) |
