You can reach Big Sur, CA only through Highway 1, which is really winds around a lot and you are constantly ascending/descending mountainous terrain. It is mostly forested land, and it's all protected from development (which means that the two gas stations there charge about $6 per gallon when the rest of the state is paying about $3.75 per gallon).

Avoid going there in the late summer (June-August) because it is really dry and you slide around on trails. I almost lost my life due to a serious accident on a severely dried trail. A few days later, a large fire broke out there and the whole forest (and quaint little library and the few restaurants there, too) eventually were all destroyed. :(

You will probably not find hotels, BUT establishments DO have running water and some have outhouses. You can actually see the beach and coastline from some trails, too.

Bring a snack and cold drinks. There isn't anything for miles and miles.
