Davenport, Iowa, United States Be sure to visit the Village of East Davenport -- terrific sightseeing and local culture (there is some culture here, believe it or not)...Also, don't miss the Putnam Museum...for a medium sized local museum this is worth 5 stars...good Egyptian, Asian, and local exibits, plus a variety of interesting traveling exhibitions. It also includes an I-Max theatre and snack bar. Good tip? (0) Stockton, Iowa, United States This is a little Iowa town that 99.99999999 percent of the population won't want to see. There are no attractions. Just 8 streets and 500 dogs...however if you were in the area 60 years ago, the place was a hotspot. The dance hall (which is now a car garage) was graced by performers like Benny Goodman and Glen Miller. People used to come on the train from Chicago to hear music and to dance. The bar is now apartments and hotel doesn't exist anymore, but pictures of the old dance hall are worth seeing. Stop by the extremely tiny and rustic-looking town hall/post office and ask to see pictures of what the town looked like before 1950 (when fires started destroying the businesses) or before 1929 (when the depression started destroying the little town's economy).... Good tip? (0) Muscatine, Iowa, United States Mark Twain worked at the local paper in this town and said he'd always remember it for the sunsets -- but then he also said he was never awake early enough for the sunrises.
A century ago this was the button making capital of the world (really). There's a button museum downtown which is interesting if you're into that kind of thing, but there are also a few specialty shops and antique stores in the downtown. Sometimes the local community college theatre department or chorus gives performances.
What's really great about this city is in the late summer when the Muscatine Melons are ripe...YUM! You won't get a better melon anywhere else...trust me it is worth it! Good tip? (0) Moscow, Iowa, United States Okay, believe it or not, this was the first capital of Iowa. It now has like three streets and a few years ago someone actually had two pet buffalo (really!) Good tip? (0) Iowa City, Iowa, United States The downtown (which is right in the middle of the University of Iowa campus) has a lot of good restaurants and stores. The "Ped Mall" has a lot of trendy shops that the college students love. The Prairie Lights bookstore has poetry and book readings by local authors (Iowa City is the home of the world famous University of Iowa Writer's Workshop!)
Also, if you're into theatre and art, Hancher Auditorium has broadway shows and terrific concerts. Be sure to check out their small art museum too. Good tip? (0) Wilton, Iowa, United States This little town has a nice public pool and a cute little down town. Good tip? (0) Newton, Iowa, United States Great small town North of Des Moines. Has small town flair with unique lodging and dining experience. Beautiful park. Good tip? (0) Council Bluffs, Iowa, United States Council Bluffs is okay; standard Midwest town from what I can tell. However, if you're looking for more to do, cross the border and just minutes away is Omaha's Old Market. Old Market offers more interesting and posh lodging, dining, nightlife, and people-watching. Also, be sure to visit the Bemis Center for your art fix. The main floor gallery features work created by its past and current in-house resident artists. Also, nearby is the studio of sculptor Jun Kaneko who is well-known for his dango ("dumpling" sculptures). Here's a link for more info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jun_Kaneko . Good tip? (0) Sioux Center, Iowa, United States Welcome to the place that has nothing. Well, there is Dordt college. And we are pretty proud of our Super Walmart, so spend some time there. I heard we just got a 24 hour gym. Wow... that is really something. We have mcdonalds as well! Oh and there is actually the best genuine mexican food place ever. It's probably the only mexican place in Sioux Center that isn't the taco wagon or taco johns, so you can't miss it. Good tip? (0) Keokuk, Iowa, United States Tiny farm town you can drive through in about 30 minutes! Not anything to see here but farms, no big sores have to go to the next big town for that! Good tip? (0) |
