Okay so I definitely don't claim to be an experienced New York traveler by any and all means, but here are some things I saw. First off is getting there.
Transportaion : If you can don't drive into the city. Park where you can take the bus in or a train, sure you might need to give a 30 minute commute, but you'll be rewarded with avoiding parking fees, insane driving conditions, and a ding free car. In the same vein of transportation is taxis. Now if you've been around all day shopping, eating, sightseeing, and just plain old having a blast you can be hella tired by the end of the day. Although I suggest that you should walk wherever you need to go (seriously walking from 86th and 2nd to 32 and 8th took MAYBE thirty minutes and it was an awesome time getting to really see everything and bookmark some interesting restaurants/shops. Plus it's exercise :-D) I can understand being tired and wanting to get a cab. So on getting one a couple of things 1. Don't be timid about getting one. Although we feel silly wading into the middle of traffic with an outstretched hand in the air, you have to or else you will be walking those fifty city blocks. Also in peak hours 4pm-8pm you need to be hella assertive or else you won't get anything. 2. Know where you're going, seriously even if you're not an expert know the name of the place you're going, the address (i.e.the Empire State buliding is 350 5th ave), or the intersecting street and avenue (i.e. the Metropolitan museum of art is street --82nd and 5th -- avenue ) if you are fumbling around with directions or say a wrong street name it's okay it isn't as if they will laugh in your face, but they will tack on an out-of-towners fee...seriously. 3. Watch the map. In each taxi now they have a virtual screen in which you can track your progress. Make sure they're taking you on the most direct route so they aren't taking your money and if they are taking little detours speak up! 4. Try to time it well. There are a few surcharges one can land catching a cab peak and night . Night is sort of unavoidable if you're going anywhere from 8pm to 6am, but it's only a .50 cent surcharge on your total. Peak is if you ride from 4pm-8pm on a weekday and that's a dollar surcharge to your ride. Not a fortune spent with either one, but just something to keep in mind to maybe spur you to eat before heading back to grand central station. 5. Tip. Yes you should tip it's courtesy I usually tip like 15%-25% 10% is fine too just a couple of dollars on your twenty dollar cab fare ain't bad.
Sightseeing: Now obviously there's is so much to do in New York. Museums, food, shopping, food, central park, food, shows, food, people watching, and food! Okay so I'm a little nuts on food, but that's a whole other section. With taking in the sights though you don't need to pay thirty bucks for a tour bus to appreciate the city. You have feet use them! Walking around is a great way to not only see the sights, but listen and see the people, learn how to cross a busy street when the walk sign is still not up yet, how to window shop like a madman, and how to make all the little stops you might miss atop a double decker. If you're skeptical though here's a few hints on where to wander. Uptown is a haven for the curious and the refined. Central park is up there and flanking it at west 79th and west 82nd are two of the largest museums in new york, the met and the museum of natural history --79th and Central park west (as an aside both close at around 5 do plan on visiting early, they're both enormous!) Also there is the Lincoln Center. Now it sounds silly and pricy to peruse these halls, but most of the stuff is free and rather breathtaking and interesting. The lighting in the freaking place is enough to dumbfound you especially in the Metropolitan Opera house (as a hint for dates take your girl there on a winter night, it's spectacularly beautiful and free :-D) Film festivals, thursday morning theatrical rehersals, and jazz festivals are all things to see in just one place. Also at the Josie Robertson Plaza in the summer there's is Midsummer Night's Swing, a series of free live band sessions. There are a lot of nice residential buildings around here making it great strolling territory and it's less busy then the bustling midtown atosphere that is time square. Along with the aforementioned museums there are sick amount of them here also worth mentioning such as the Guggenheim (88th and 5th ave), Cooper-Hewitt (2 East 91st st.), Frick Collection (1 East 70th st.), The Whitney (945 Madison ave.) all of which offer great stuff like concerts, galleries, and beautiful sights to see. (Tip if you're going to be visiting a lot of museums definitely check them out online first for special offers and such like for instance if you visit the Whitney on fridays from 6pm-9pm admission is pay what you want and there are lots of live performances. Also look into a city pass; citypass.com since for $63 one can gain free admission into a myriad of places. Restaurants dot uptown, but be prepared to spend a bit on them! (sixth ave is lined with tons of great restaurants ranging from Thai to Japanese) Midtown goes without introduction or description what with times square, the Chrysler and empire state buildings, FAO Schwartz, Rockefeller center, the new york public library, and of course the insane shopping it's tough to edge in any more stuff to do! As it is there are more things to do such as visit even more museums such as the MoMA; museum of modern art, the international center of photography, and the museum of television and radio. Grand Central Terminal is also a great place to visit, yes visit, due to the great number of places to eat and the fantastic chance to people watch the fuck out of incoming visitors to the city. Also the huge windows and clock are a source of enjoyment among simple minded fools such as myself. The food court at grand central actually does offer fantastic food options for a much better price than the crazy prices of restaurants such as the four seasons and the modern, although if you have the money for them go by any and all means! Downtown an eclectic collection of aspiring artists and musicians. Greenwich and the East village are both visually stunning spots where one can peruse the street artists work or stop in at a jazz club or cafe while watching a parade go through the streets. Union Square's open market stands as one of the finest open air markets around where in the summer you can find everything edible under the sun. Other attractions include the Chelsea galleries, the flatiron building, the meatpacking district, and seriously some of the most picaresque strolls you will ever take. Ha ha also as an aside there are a lot of cabaret performances downtown that are really quite fun if you're open to that sort of nonsensical silliness. Still south is the statue of liberty, ellis island, china town ,and the south street seaport. Okay so that's everything I personally know about New York and though it seems like a lot, it isn't ha ha. If you have questions or wanna visit call me I'll help ya out and am also eager to go.

What can one say about New York city?!? Use public transport as the subway is the best and quickest way to get around. Get a Metrocard from the station along with a map, a bit confusing at first but you get used to it. Put on your good walking shoes, you'll need them. I recommend Brooklyn Botanical Gardens, Brooklyn Museum (Eastern Parkway no. 2 train), The Cloisters, JR on Park Ave (Fulton St Subway) for all your CD/DVD/Computer needs at the best prices, Metropolitan Museum of Art is fantastic, Statue of Liberty on a good day and Ellis Island. For shopping got to go to Macy's, Bloomingdales and Century 21, which is near the old World Trade centre. Another good place to shop, relax and eat is South Street Seaport - a walk down Fulton Street. There is also a better, less congested place by South Street Seaport to buy discounted Broadway theatre tickets than in Times Square. It is well worth getting out of Manhattan if you have the time and exploring the Bronx Botanical Gardens, Harlem - eat soul food at Sylvia's etc, go shopping in Flatbush, Brooklyn. Take a train ride to Boston or Washington DC if you have the time. Great to take a train ride from Grand Central. So much to do in New York not enough space for any more tips!!! Not easy to find banks that exchange money in the USA. Always take travellers cheques, cash or plastic, don't try to change currency - it's too hard.
