Caracas, Capital, Venezuela
An absolute must, this city is facinating. You must try one of the local cafe's and try a veg/fruit smoothie, very bizaare! Great architecture too. But do exactly what you tour guide tells you and never leave his sight!

Not nearly as scary as people made out, but we did stick with the safety do's and don't's in our guidebook so maybe that is why. We found it had an excellent public transportation system.

Caracas has delicious Caribbean cuisine in downtown Caracas. The weather is just fabulous and people are very friendly. Get versed in Venezuelan politcs, history and culture prior to traveling there so you can understand and engage in interesting conversation.

Don't wear jewelry or sunglasses while walking on the street, they are in danger of being stolen. While this city is quite dangerous, one thing really caught my eye: the slums (ranchos) on the mountain side at night. They all have these little twinkling lights in them and when you're in the city at night, they all light up and it looks like the city is surrounded by little lights. It's quite amazing.

Do NOT stay here... Move on to Caracas, or wherever you are going, but DO NOT stay here. I had reservations at a hotel, not a bad one, and we got there, and there was no room for another passenger, a young lady from the states. So they took her to another hotel, and said I should go as well, even though they had my room, paid by my colleagues in Maracaibo... The place had barbed wire on the windows, razor wire on the roof and there was noone at the front desk - some guy came in with a gun, and then let us in, but he was gone after that, and the hotel was unlisted in the phone book so my colleagues could not even contact me... The woman came to my room 15 minutes after we got there and asked if she could sleep with me for protection... Usually women want protection FROM me in that context, but anyway, we got each other through the night - but DO NOT GO TO MAIQUETIA! Get away from the airport FAST!
