What is GeckoGo?

GeckoGo is the go-to source for independent travellers.   We are the fastest growing source of unique travel content. Using this wealth of traveller-knowledge, and our flexible way of searching for information, our goal is to ensure that when you travel, you know you are getting the most out of your trip.

This site is not about the Eiffel towers of the world.  It's about finding the activities, places to go and things to do uniquely interesting to you.  It's also not about just finding information, but giving back as well - whether it's through community projects, or sharing your travel insights with the next traveller.

Team Bios

Eric MacKinnon, GeckoGo
Eric MacKinnon holds an MBA from Schulich School of Business and a BMus in musical composition. Prior to GeckoGo, he consulted small businesses on intellectual property issues and worked at L’Oréal Canada where he managed all men’s, hair care, hydration, mature skin segments at Biotherm and at Vichy. Eric is the quintessential backpacker who has traveled extensively through 17 countries and has summited 6000m mountains. He is fluent in French and English.
Pokin Yeung, GeckoGo
Pokin Yeung holds an Honors BBA in Marketing & MIS from Simon Fraser University. She has worked at a Research in Motion on voice and SMS features where she has received a patent. Pokin has also worked at Campbell Soup Ltd and L’Oréal Canada. During her tenure, Pokin’s brands experienced double digit growth,achieving and maintaining the #1 ranking in drugstores. Pokin has also received the Outstanding Student Marketer Award by the BC American Marketing Association. Pokin is an avid hiker, summited Mount Kilimanjaro in December 2005. She has been to 15 countries, is fluent in English and conversant in Cantonese and French.
Aaron Chow, GeckoGo
Aaron Chow holds a BBA in Marketing, MIS and Finance from Simon Fraser University. He has experience at Research in Motion and TELUS, where he was responsible for revenue forecasting and pricing strategies for the $180 MM ADSL product line, as well as new markets analysis for a $20 MM capital expenditure plan. Other experience includes consumption analysis, sales reporting management, and management of trade spend for a $60 MM company. His extracurricular activities include representing SFU as the official coach & advisor for business case competitions. Aaron has been to 20 countries, has backpacked through Europe, and understands a sprinkling of French.

Aug 2007 GeckoGo incorporates! Wow are we really a company now?
First developer joins GeckoGo
Dec 2007 GeckoGo team goes travelling - have to stay relevant to the concept, after all!
Jan 2008 Travel Brain (Mes Voyages en Français) - our travel app in the social media space is released. Team has no idea what it's doing. Hopes things work.
Feb 2008 Travel Brain - starts growing in earnest. Decide to start working on viral channels
Mar 2008 Travel Brain is released on Bebo
Travel Brain reaches 10,000 users. For a utility app that doesn't poke, we're ecstatic
May 2008 Travel Brain reaches 100,000 users.
Jul 2008 GeckoGo opens its doors to the public. We don't tell a soul. Still, people find us.
Travel Brain launches on MySpace
Travel Brain launches on Hi5
Travel Answers launches. Becomes about as popular as Yahoo Answers' travel category. Team celebrates for 5 seconds. Gets back to work.
Aug 2008 Travel Brain reaches 300,000 users on Facebook
Travel Brain becomes fastest growing travel app on MySpace that doesn't advertise
Travel Brain launches on Friendster
Oct 2008 GeckoGo officially launches, and Travel Brain and GeckoGo become fully integrated. Now you can store your travel profile and see it wherever you go!
Dec 2008 GeckoGo and Travel Brain reach 550,000 users

GeckoGo voted runner up for both People's Choice and Blogger's Choice in the Mashable Open Web Awards in the Travel Category
Jan 2009 GeckoGo offers FB Connect support for users
