A tourist trap, but still one worth visiting. Plenty of tourist shops, but be prepared to negotiate for prices of some things or you will get ripped off. Lots of places to get food (don't leave without trying the Clam Chowder in a sourdough bowl!) and souvenirs and many bay tours are available.
An incredibly impressive bridge by any stretch of the imagination. Take a walk or ride across the bridge, but be prepared to walk back since the only non-tourist bus services that operate on this bridge only operate on the weekend. There are spectacular views of San Francisco, Angel Island and Alcatraz. Be sure to dress warmly - the bridge is exposed to the Pacific Ocean and is often subject to fog and/or a very, very cold wind.
Nicknamed "the river that flows upside down" due to it's very brown colour, it's the main river that flows through the Melbourne CBD. Fairly plain when it passes by the south part of the Melbourne CBD, the most picturesque parts of the river close to the CBD is along Alexandra Avenue, opposite the Sports and Entertainment centre, just outside the Botanical Gardens. There are bike paths alongside the river that make it a very pleasant way to see a little of Melbourne.
Modern architecture isn't really my cup of tea, but nonetheless, it's quite an impressive square, directly opposite the historic Flinders Street Railway Station. Worth a visit.
Touted as Melbourne's greatest market, this one lives up to it's hype. It's a fantastic way to kill an afternoon and would be an excellent way to pick up some souvenirs without blowing the budget. A must see if you're in Melbourne on the days that it's open.
A tourist attraction that has suffered from it's own success. Very expensive, and unless you pay through the nose for upgraded seating, you get to see very little. Exceptionally cold, particularly in Winter since it's exposed to Bass Strait. Not an "avoid at all costs", but I wouldn't go out of my way to visit any more.
An iconic piece of Melbourne's architecture - built in it's current form in 1904, it has been the main railway station of Melbourne's suburban rail network ever since. If you're interested in architecture, it's well worth a visit.
