Allegedly the largest market in Africa, the Merkato consists of an entire city district, t.i. countless alleys packed with all sorts of things. Don't go there unaccompanied as you'll find it difficult to navigate, plus there is not-so-reccomendable people hanging around the busiest corners (mostly pickpockets, but robberies do also occur)

All streets lead to Tromostovje. It's a beautiful part of the city but keep your eyes open as muggings have occurred in the nearby alleys.

It actually isn't a place, but "berber pizza", a local delicacy. Rissani is a good place to try it, as it is limited to that region only. It consists of finely diced meat, chopped onions, parsley, coriander and spices, wrapped in dough and oven-baked.

A cheap and friendly hotel, right behind Djemaa el-Fna (1minute walking distance, 5star location) The owners Abdoul and Ahmed are always available for whatever you might need and the shared facilities are swept clean several times a day. Highly recommended for budget travellers.

The tallest waterfall in Morocco, the Cascades d'Ouzoud are also home to a healthy population of Barbary Macaques. Although they might look cute and friendly, a short glimpse at their razor-sharp front teeth should be enough warning to keep you at a safe distance.

The best food in town! A various array of quality alcoholic drinks available too.

Situated in a spectacular early 1900s building, the post office also hosts a small exhibition about the history of the postal service. Worth visiting, if only for the unbelievable giant mural made of stamps!

Unfortunately it's over, this year they moved it to Spain and it's going to stay that way. Sigh!

Great people-watching spot, check out the old lady selling small handmade Zapatistas' figurines.

Are you more of a souvenir chasing type or an AK-47 lover? Doesn't matter, because you'll find them both here. Plus loads of other interesting stuff.

The beautiful thing is that every mosque in Turkey is open to non-muslims. Even though you're not dressed conservatively, you can still visit it as you are given shawls and scarfs at the entrance. Brilliant!

This beautiful cathedral was built with stones from the adjacent aztec temple (Templo Mayor). Notice the giant golden altar and the huge pendulum, demonstrating how the church is sinking and leaning in the soft terrain underneath.

The authorities tried to change its name, but to no avail. Facing insurrection, they quickly took a step back, and this remains one of the few places where General Tito's name remains publicly displayed.

The final resting place of Emperor Haile Selassie I and his wife Empress Menen, and also of Ethiopian music legend Tlahoun Gessesse. The latter is probably the one who gets most visits.

And amazing towel sculptures on your beds, every day a different figure.

I give it five stars, as 'zouk' means butt/ass in moroccan arabic. Try with 'souk' instead :) lol

Spectacular scenery, from the crocodiles to the ride under a pine-shaped waterfall, including the cave of worship (still in use) in the canyon walls above the river. In one word, breathtaking.

Notice the inhabitants of the holes in the courtyard walls. These are actually dug-out graves. In some of them you'll see mummified corpses, while in others there are homeless people, using them as makeshift shelters.

The medina is slightly less labyrinthine that the one in Fes, but be prepared to get lost nonetheless! If you're lucky you might stumble upon the best camel kefta in Morocco.

Great decor, was once one of my favourite coffeeshops. It has become a kind of a tourist trap, the atmosphere isn't nice anymore and the last thime I was there, they sold me wet weed. I don't reccomend it anymore, maybe for a quick drink (buying drinks is now compulsory even though you bought their weed, they should be ashamed)

One of the loveliest places in Amsterdam, ideal for taking a breath and enjoying some people watching on a bench.

If you like overcrowded beaches, this would probably be too much even for you, torture lovers.

A real life medina, without anyone scavenging for tourists. Tiznit is renowned for its silversmiths so jewellery is worth checking out. Prices are fair. In the center of town there is a mud-brick mosque with an interesting minaret resembling those in Mali.

Rent a snowboard and hit the dunes, one of the cheapest and most fun activities in the desert. The only downside is that each ride involves an uphill walk with the board on your back.

Only 10% were excavated and it is already one of the most amazing sites on the planet.

A really fun museum with various displays and dioramas, presented in a very catchy manner. The best part is that most displays are interactive and it's really amusing touching everything and being nosy, feels like being seven again!

A perfect example of a medieval coastal city, beautifully preserved. Stroll trough the ancient narrow alleys and soak up the atmophere.

Amazing view but certainly not adequate for people with vertigo! The passing tram adds to the adrenaline rush.

Don't get out without a compass, map, GPS, all sorts of talismans and lucky charms! And you will still get lost probably...Unforgettable.

Take a long walk down the beach, past the touts and hustlers, and head to the semi-submerged portuguese ruins. It's a pleasant spot to enjoy the sun, sea and vistas, just mind that the lagoon (behind the wadi you cross just before the ruin) fills up with high tide so don't take off your swimsuits if late, or you might get your clothes soaken wet when crossing the wadi on your way back.

Romans call it 'The typewriter' and it's considered an ugly monster that profanates the view of the colosseum by many. I wasn't impressed either.

Both ancient and modern Aksum lay in ruins, the first are certainly more appealing. Don't miss Queen of Sheba's Bath, an ancient artificial lake where locals gather water and wash their clothes.

The gardens are actually outside the medina, in what would seem to be the hustle and bustle of downtown Marrakech, but it's actually a quiet haven with fish ponds, tortoises, cacti, bougainvilleas, palms, plus a museum of islamic art and great fresh juice. One of my favourite places in Marrakech.

It's basically a smaller scale of the Medersa Bou Inania or Ben Youssef, meaning it has all the attributes of her grander sisters, except for the crowds. I was in complete solitude when I visited.

It's a fascinating place, too bad that money for further research and excavation is always lacking.

Arguably the kasbah on the best location ever! The gardens are oh so beautiful.

Not only the building, the whole territory is in fact a museum. These are the places that inspired Hemingway's For whom the bell tolls, a must see!

One of my favourite places in Mexico! Jump at the sound of firecrackers calling for prayer, buy a Zapatistas T-shirt on the colorful local market or organize a trip to one of the numerous attractions nearby, it's guaranteed you're sure gonna have a great time!

The best introduction to Morocco, we could call it Morocco for beginners. It is a clean, well organized and not too chaotic medina (unlike any other in Moroccco)

Just can't imagine Marrakech's skyline without the Koutoubia minaret, beside being a beautiful landmark it's also a great orientation means.

Neverending work-in-progress, you just gotta love it for that only!

The Portuguese Cistern is a stunning dungeon-style building, with sunlight penetrating through openings in the ceiling creating beautiful light effects. It was also the setting for Orson Welles' Othello.

Aptly nicknamed "Manhattan of the desert", allegedly built by giants, these high-rise mud-brick buildings are stunning.

There is a huge variety of items on display, too bad they're presented in a dull and uninteresting way. The best asset is the grow room.

The second best hotel in the medina (which isn't really saying much though). Go for the 'mafraj' (room with a view)

An oasis of peace in the city centre, a beautiful place to spend a couple of hours among the cacti and bougainvillea.

The highest court in Athens (literally!)

Surrounding the Begijnhof and the Historical Museum, this cute set of lanes were my greatest obstacle (always getting lost) on the way to my favourite coffeeshop.

At the time of our visit it was completely occupied by the military, but we still managed to get good food, cold beers and meeting friendly locals. The center of life in the city, alongside the nearby market.

Amazing, like every single ancient egyptian ruin.

Visit the film festival, the setting is gorgeous!

'Cake frosting' palace sitting atop a giant rock formation, looks like suspended in the air.

And total rip-off prices, I almost had to trade a kidney for a beer!

At night it's really creepy, feels like being in a David Lynch movie.

Spooky feeling seeing your hand disappear in there!

Like stepping in a time machine and being catapulted back in the Thousand and one nights epoque, just remember your map or basic arabic for asking for directions, as it is a crazy and colorful labyrinthine maze of tiny streets and alleys, dotted with countless shops of all sorts.

The crafts are great quality but the real attraction is the people.

The place for horseriding, from ponies to beautiful Lipizzaner horses.

Stay sober or you might not come back from your trip! :)

Incredible, just like any other Egyptian ruin.

Cheap place with all the amenities, one of the best value-for-money hotels in Morocco.

When there's no pope hanging around it's just a giant empty square.

Visit Forte Prenestino, a formidable squat in an old military fort from Garibaldi's era.

The view from Giotto's Tower is formidable, definitely worth the countless tricky steps.

Visit a small Women's Cooperative where single mothers sell their handicrafts (mostly woven objects and ceramics) It's in a small village 10km from Gonder, ask for the ancient jewish village.

A city that suits all tastes. And the best kofte in the world!

A descent into the mine and a miner's lunch are included.

The line between genius and insane is really thin here! Awesome!

Sadly, they've been reduced to only a third of their past glory by a dam. Still worth a visit though!

The monastery is beautiful, but the best are the hiking panorama trail and the giant antropomorphic rocks dotted alongside the mountain.

Great setting and great nightlife too!

Worth the visit for the trip on the lake alone. The oddly shaped circular monasteries feature frescoes dating mostly from the 13th to the 16th century.

Watch out when 'tramontana' blows, you might get blown off the pier and have yourself killed!

Chellah are the remains of the ancient Roman city Sala Colonia, which was later abandoned and on whose ruins the Almohads built a necropolis. The Merenids added a mosque and several monuments later. It is a fascinating array of ruins. The location is superb, an enormous garden (with hundreds of storks' nests everywhere) enclosed by walls just outside the hustle and bustle of the city centre.
