Page 1 of 10 My Reviews![]() Bangkok, Central Thailand, Thailand ![]() Added Jul 6, 2010 Vimanmek is also the former home of our beloved King Chulalongkorn (Rama V). The grounds are peaceful, offers a glimpse into Thailand's history, AND a nice escape from BKK's tourist crowds. The artifacts and rooms are kept in pristine condition, and guided tours offer a thorough introduction to this beautiful, labyrinth of a palace. ![]() Playa del Carmen, Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico ![]() Added Jul 6, 2010 Nice centralized location (on the quiet end of "5th Avenue"), spacious room and bath with AC. The only con is the security and management. Our room was broken into while we were away at dinner. The would-be robbers weren't actually able to break into our room, but somehow managed to lodge our door lock into the door frame. The night watchman (who was not only the least intimidating security person I ever saw, but also a good 5 inches shorter than me), despite his sincere and diligent efforts, wasn't able to get ahold of the manager. Not wanting to sleep in a room with a broken door (we managed to remove the door from its hinges), we checked ourselves into another hotel for the night. The manager/owner was very apologetic the next morning and treated us to dinner at a local Italian restaurant. I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt that they've improved their security since our stay, but not willing to bet on it. Otherwise, we had a pleasant stay at Posada Mariposa and would recommend them based on location and value. ![]() Seattle, Washington, United States ![]() Added Jul 4, 2010 A Seattle institution, Elliot's is a true book lover's paradise (without the cats): the tall bookcases invite you to sit down on the floor and make yourself at home, the staff is also made up of book lovers, and the historical location (Pioneer Square) tells you you're amongst locals. ![]() Avignon, Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur, France ![]() Added Jul 4, 2010 The size and grandeur of the building is spectacular (as well as the views), but once inside its quite spartan. There are countless artifacts on display and the audio guide is very helpful, but I still found it difficult to imagine the building occupied - by its previous resident Popes or French military. While its a must-see in Avignon, the Palais des Papes did not leave me in awe. ![]() Orange, Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur, France ![]() Added Jul 3, 2010 We stayed at Hotel Saint Florent for 2 nights. We arrived on our tandem bicycle early in the evening and the proprietress, Myriam checked us in and graciously stored our tandem in her personal quarters. You cannot beat the location - its literally steps away from the Antique Theatre and Orange's restaurants and boutiques - nor can you beat the price, 45 Euros per night! Our room was small (yet what do you expect for 45 Euros?) and charmingly decorated. Our bathroom was clean. No bed bugs. Myriam and her family were great hosts, we felt very well looked after. I would totally recommend Saint Florent whether you were on a budget or not. ![]() London, England, United Kingdom ![]() Added Jul 3, 2010 If you are on a budget, this is your hotel. Centrally located in West London (about 8 blocks from Kensington High Street), a couple blocks away from the Earl Court Tube station, and in a really great area – oh and free internet! However, keep your expectations low. Our room was very small, several fixtures were broken in our bathroom (including the shower door handle) and upon check-in were assigned to a room in their basement. The stench was awful and the only light came from a window that looked into a light well. I told the receptionist, then the manager, that if we weren’t given a proper room, we would leave. He offered us another room, this time on the first floor adjacent to the dining room and it was acceptable. We weighed the pros and cons of the great location of our hotel vs its amenities and condition, and I still believe this place is a good value. ![]() Venice, Veneto Region, Italy ![]() Added Jul 3, 2010 Wonderful hotel across from vaparetto and train stations and right on the Grand Canal. I sent the reception staff an email before our arrival requesting a nice, canal view room for my Mother and they did not fail. The hotel needs some slight updating, but otherwise, the staff was informed, helpful and sweet as can be. No internet or laundry service though. ![]() Lausanne, Lake Geneva Region, Switzerland ![]() Added Jul 3, 2010 We LOVED this place! It was located in the center of the Old City (Lausanne is divided between 2 districts, the Old City and Ouchy – on the shores of Lake Geneva) and within waking distance of everything including Lausanne Cathedral and the Metro stop, the service was awesome, there was free internet (no AC however) and they serve an awesome breakfast (fresh bread, cheese, fresh squeezed OJ, french press coffee, salami, poached eggs, and an assortment musli – healthy and delicious) with a stunning view (see picture above). ![]() Avignon, Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur, France ![]() Added Jul 3, 2010 We loved this place. Centrally located (2 minutes on foot to the Palais des Papes, Place de l'Horloge and Place Saint-Pierre) and pleasant rooms. Yes, the shower is timed, but we appreciate the hotel's proactive approach to water conservation. The hotel appears dark from the outside, but its beautifully lit with natural light inside due to its gorgeous marble staircase reflecting light from the courtyard. The staff was very attentive and accommodating - and they were very gracious about storing our tandem (we were on a 2 wk cycling tour through Provence) in their private garage. The one con I have is their breakfast - we were told by the receptionist to reserve our breakfast early because they "only serve the freshest ingredients". Well, they don't - our jam and yogurt were in plastic disposable containers and our coffee was reheated. Skip the hotel breakfast (7 Euros) and have your morning espresso and croissant at the patisserie in Place Saint-Pierre instead. Despite their crappy breakfast, we had a wonderful stay and totally recommend Hotel le Medieval ![]() Bangkok, Central Thailand, Thailand ![]() Added Jul 3, 2010 The Montien hosted both of our extended families during the week of our wedding in Bangkok, and served as the “home base” during our travels in other parts of Thailand and Cambodia. Their service was awesome, they had the best “continental breakfast” – in Thailand this includes sausage, bacon, a crepe station, an egg station, congee, coffee of every variety, fresh squeezed juice of every variety and so forth -, their security and staff ensured we always wanted to come “home” to our hotel room. Oh and did I mention marble bathrooms, panoramic views of Bangkok’s skyline, its across the street from Pat Pong (+ one block over from Silom) and our own “noodle alley”? Best. Hotel. Ever. ![]() Siemreab, Cambodia ![]() Added Jul 3, 2010 Beautiful modern hotel with French colonial-inspired architecture, pool, reading lounge, restaurant, internet station, tasteful gift shop and lots of tuk tuk riders outside awaiting your business! Another reason La Noria scored major points with us was their selection of sustainable tourism excursions. Highly recommended. ![]() Ko Tao, Thailand Gulf, Thailand ![]() Added Jul 3, 2010 Here’s what you get: private bathroom with shower and western toilet and sink; nice comfy mattress and clean bed linens; and a spectacular view of Chalok Baan Kao Bay. JP’s also has a very nice internet cafe, restaurant right on the beach, safe lockers for your valuables and shuttle/dirt bike rental services. They were awesome and just really made feel at home. And despite the fact that our bungalow was high up on the hill, it literally took us 2 minutes to walk down to the beach. ![]() Aix-en-Provence, Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur, France ![]() Added Jul 3, 2010 We stayed at L’Epicerie for 6 nights – 4 nights in the Calisson Suite and 2 nights in the Vanille room. Both were gorgeous and had even more gorgeous views of the rooftops and gardens of Aix. The owner, Luc, also graciously agreed to store our bicycle case while we were on our cycling tour. L’Epicerie is centrally located in Aix, right around the corner from the Forum des Cardeur, Place de Hotel d’ Ville and a five minute leisurely stroll to the Cours Mirabeau. Awesome breakfast included. ![]() Arles, Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur, France ![]() Added Jul 3, 2010 The most comfortable bed ever. Eric, the owner, is a professional chef and makes a pretty damn good breakfast (in addition to being a fabulous host). We were fighting off a cold by the time we arrived in Arles, and Eric brought us wonderful honey tea every evening (we stayed 2 nights). Internet, long distance phone calls and breakfast include! ![]() Vienna, Vienna State, Austria ![]() Added Jul 3, 2010 Great quiet, yet centralized location – a short walk away from the Kantstrasse and Schomberg Palace, Library, Museums and St. Stephen’s Cathedral. We requested a room with a view of the park and it was gorgeous. ![]() Zurich, Zurich Region, Switzerland ![]() Added Jul 3, 2010 We loved this place. Its a nice 3-4 star hotel in the quiet center of town. 5 minutes walk to the Train Station, Bahnhofstrasse and Niederdorf (Old City). Zurich has a thriving night life and it can get a little noisy, so we appreciated the quiet location. Awesome service with the amenities typical of this kind of hotel and then some. Also, they have the most comfortable feather beds I’ve ever slept in. Tripadvisor rates this hotel as the best value in Zurich and I completely agree.
