For those like me it`s a place to see and touch your knowledge. Amazing! ![]() Barcelona, Catalonia Region, Spain ![]() Added Aug 26, 2011 Barcelona's Montjuïc is a broad shallow hill with a relatively flat top overlooking the harbour, to the southwest of the city centre. The eastern side of the hill is almost a sheer cliff, giving it a commanding view over the city's harbour immediately below. The top of the hill (a height of 173 metres) was the site of several fortifications, the latest of which (the Castell de Montjuïc) remains today. The fortresslargely dates from the 17th century, with 18th century additions. In 1842, the garrison (loyal to the Madrid government) shelled parts of the city. It served as a prison, often holding political prisoners, until the time of General Franco. The castle was also the site of numerous executions. In 1897, an incident popularly known as Els processos de Montjuïc prompted the execution of anarchistsupporters, which then led to a severe repression of the workers' struggle for their rights. On different occasions during the Spanish Civil War, both Nationalists and Republicans were executed there, each at the time when the site was held by their opponents. The Catalan nationalist leader Lluís Companys i Jover was also executed there in 1940, having been extradited to the Franco government by the Nazis. ![]() Porto, Northern Portgual Region, Portugal ![]() Added Aug 26, 2011 Casa da Música was conceived to mark 2001, the year in which Porto was Cultural Capital of Europe, and it is the first new building in Portugal to be entirely dedicated to music - to the presentation and public enjoyment of music, to music education and to the creation of music. The project took shape in 1999 after the Rem Koolhaas & Ellen van Loon - Office for Metropolitan Architecture won the international architectural competition. Work began in 1999 on the site of Porto's former central tram garage on the Rotunda da Boavista, and Casa da Música opened its doors to the public on April 15th , 2005. Casa da Música was planned as a home for all types of music and it is not only part of the urban redevelopment of Porto but also part of a network of cultural facilities, for the city of Porto and for the wider world. Underlying it is an innovative and wide-ranging cultural project, which aims to make an exciting contribution to the national and international music scene, as an arena for all types of musical events - from classical music to jazz, from fado to electronic music, from great international productions to more experimental projects. Besides concerts, recitals and other types of performance, Casa da Música also organises events for musicians and musicologists and invests in research into the origins of Portuguese music. In addition, it plays a very important role in music education. It is a cultural meeting point between music and other areas of artistic creation and knowledge, providing a space for all kinds of audiences and creators. ![]() Toledo, Castilla-La Mancha Region, Spain ![]() Added Aug 24, 2011 This is the best place in Toledo. Make sure that you`ve cheked if the museum is open before going there, lots of people don`t do that arriving at the place when its closed. There you can see and feel history through ages and for south americans, like me, there`s an entire part dedicated to the Colonial Era. Believe... It`s amazing! ![]() Munich, Bayern Region, Germany ![]() Added Aug 23, 2011 Der Dresdner Zwinger is a quiet and beautiful place in the middle of the city center. It`s difficult to imagine such beautiful place being bombarded during WWII. The building complex worth by itself, but the art gallery is a plus. Must see!
