Barbarossa's Castle is near Goslar. King Frederick 'Redbeard' Barbarossa was a powerful figure at the time of the Crusades. Goslar itself is a quintessential 1000 year old German town, full of gingerbread houses. It was an important imperial city and mining centre that is now a UNESCO World Heritage site. Barbarossa lost his town, Goslar, to Henry the Lion over a dispute, adjudicated by the pope. It is so picturesque, it almost looks fake/Disney-fied. The truth is, this part of Germany (in the North) was untouched by the war. There are actually plenty of these 1000 year old towns that are still 'working' towns. Take a tour of a mine shaft from an oldtimer-miner. Our guide was keen to try out his English with us!
