I walked the trail to Notre Dame du Roc on a drizzly morning in late summer. The path is made of gray stone, looping behind the village of Castellane, rising and rising until you can see the town, and then the ruins of the medieval city wall, and the extraordinarily blue river. On top of the mountain is an old church, built on the site of old goddess sites, and within, it is dark and cold and very holy. Light a candle, then admire the blue and green valley far below, the town and the river and the ruins of an old village. Wonderful!
It is a substantial climb. Best for the fit, or plan to take plenty of time.
