It's very close, just a short cruise to the Turkish coast. The ruins are impressively huge and they say most of the site has not yet been escavated! An ancient city, with temples, theatres, houses... The facade of the Celsus library is spectacular, so high and impressive. ![]() San Luis Obispo, California, United States ![]() Added Sep 16, 2008 Madonna Inn's flamboyant style is really worth a visit! All the rooms have special names, you can buy postcards with images of your favorite room. There is also a Caveman Room! We were not so ambitious, so we just slept in San Francisco room, which was all red-and-gold, with a pink-an-gold bathroom. We were so amused, we still remember that place and laugh. I totally agree with Umberto Eco, describing Madonna Inn in his Travels in Hyperreality. ![]() Edinburgh, Scotland, United Kingdom ![]() Added Sep 16, 2008 A very beautiful garden, open since 1820. The botanical collection is very rich, I spent a whole day walking the alleys and exploring the gardens. I especially like the Palm House, built in 1858: the building is very elegant and they say it's the tallest one in Britain. ![]() Paris, Ile-de-France, France ![]() Added Sep 16, 2008 The square is so beautiful, with its elegant buildings and high slate roofs, it's one of my favorite places in Paris. I love its perfect symmetry. Besides, it's a peaceful island, I like to a have a rest inside its enclosure. There is also a Victor Hugo Museum, the house where the French writer lived from 1832 to 1848. ![]() Lisboa, Lisbon & Surrounds Region, Portugal ![]() Added Sep 16, 2008 Hosted in the Madre Deus ex-convent, the museum is a beautiful display of azulejos, the typical Portuguese decorated tiles, since the 15th century. It's really worth a visit: the convent itself is an interesting monument, with wonderful azulejo decorations. ![]() Nikko, Kantō Region, Japan ![]() Added Sep 16, 2008 Shinkyō or Sacred Bridge is an old, red-lacquered bridge over the turbulent water of the Daiya river. The structure, surrounded by green hills, is simple and extremely elegant. I visited the bridge in the evening, when fog was raising from the river. I was spellbound... ![]() Trier, Rhineland-Palatinate Region, Germany ![]() Added Sep 16, 2008 The Porta Nigra is a large roman city gate. The name comes from the dark color of the stone. It's an impressive ruin, giving a good idea of how far towards north the Roman Empire had reached, spreading its culture and architecture. The gate was partly reconstructed under Napoleon. Upper floors are open to visitors. ![]() Vienna, Vienna State, Austria ![]() Added Sep 16, 2008 An old confectionary bakery, with a long established tradiction. I tasted the well-known Sachertorte, and also bought a couple of boxes of it to bring home with me, because it's absolutely delicious. It's a place with an atmosphere, you feel all the charm and elegance of old Vienna there. The right place to have a cup of tea and a slice of Sachertorte. ![]() Tokyo, Kantō Region, Japan ![]() Added Sep 16, 2008 The Tokyo Tower is 332.6 m. tall (1,091 ft), slightly taller than the Eiffel Tower in Paris, and it's similar, though red-colored. The view from the higher observatory is impressive, and trying to spot the different buildings from there it's very amusing ![]() Siracusa, Sicilia Region, Italy ![]() Added Sep 16, 2008 The ruins of the Greek Theatre are impressive. This monument has a long history, dating back to the Magna Graecia. When I visited the ruins, it was a very hot day, and yet I wasn't tired of walking and losing myself in this fascinating place.
