Page 1 of 10 My Reviews![]() Geneve, Lake Geneva Region, Switzerland ![]() Added Dec 18, 2008 I love french cafes... because of the wealth anything in Switzerland is picture postcard perfect version of the real world.... so Geneva is like a perfect, organized French city. ![]() Alice Springs, Northern Territory, Australia ![]() Added Dec 17, 2008 If you get to 'The Alice' it has been a very long drive from anywhere and you are going to be thirsty... very thirsty. The pub is the hub of social life for the locals in any Australian country town.... well, and city too. Every pub has accommodation where you can clean up and put your feet up... I don't guarantee you will be able to sleep much because these places get rowdy on weekends. Put your feet up on your balcony and you are likely to see more action in the main street than on any TV program. ![]() Kenwick, Western Australia, Australia ![]() Added Nov 30, 2008 On the border of Kenwick and Gosnells, it is a big undercover market... with a pub on the corner. Pretty good market my most standards and plenty of well-priced souvenir stuff. There is often a local third rate band or duo singing to entertain the diners in the food hall there. There is a food market at the top too that sells meat, seafood, fruit and veg and bakery stuff. Plenty of parking available. ![]() Nedlands, Western Australia, Australia ![]() Added Nov 22, 2008 The traditional hangout for the University of WA students. ![]() Perth, Western Australia, Australia ![]() Added Nov 21, 2008 Go around to the South Perth foreshore to hire a surfcat and sail on the Swan river... heaps of fun! We used to load our boats up with jellyfish from the river and have jellyfish fights with our friends and school mates. The foreshore itself is a big park on the river and is beautiful to walk along too. At one end is the old windmill... my parents told us that the tooth fairy lived there... haha! The South Perth Zoo is the best zoo I have ever seen.... anywhere... and not expensive... it is close to the foreshore. ![]() Halls Creek, Western Australia, Australia ![]() Added Nov 21, 2008 The lifeblood of any Australian town is the local pub. Halls Creek is hot... no, bloody HOT. The locals will be hanging out there drinking cold beers after work. If you are driving through it is one of those towns where if you blink then you will miss it... and it can get a bit rough at night. ![]() Exmouth, Western Australia, Australia ![]() Added Nov 21, 2008 Forty miles of pristine deserted beach. Great for fishing and swimming. The tide goes out a very long way but when it comes in it is really, really fast.... drive back fast before the tide turns... check the conditions regularly. ![]() Paris, Ile-de-France, France ![]() Added Nov 21, 2008 I love the decor of this period and the gardens... love it! The mirror room is my favourite, but most of the palace is seriously impressive in style and design. If you love architecture, french furniture and interior design and beautiful formal gardens like me then this is a must see. One of the places I want to revisit. ![]() Cairns, Queensland, Australia ![]() Added Nov 20, 2008 I spent a few weeks diving on the reef and it was about the best thing I have ever done. I got up to my advanced PADI and got to see some of the most beautiful natural sites in the world. Seriously cool to feed the fish off the back of the boat... hundreds of them and you can swim amongst them as they come in to feed. The 40 metre dive was amazing... the diving instructors are seriously gung ho. You get to see plenty even if you just want to snorkle on the reef... as you dive deeper the water filters out the light and colours anyway. Be sure to put on sunscreen. ![]() Salisbury, England, United Kingdom ![]() Added Nov 20, 2008 It is round, interesting and ancient... good enough reason to check it out I suppose. It is, however, roped off so you cannot get too close to it now. Apparently it might be the first hospital. ![]() Melbourne, Victoria, Australia ![]() Added Nov 20, 2008 I like cafes and this place has plenty of restaurants and cafes but generally I think Melbourne is a bit of a hole. The weather is seriously crap, the river is brown and the buildings often dirty. Everyone is fanatical about Australian Rules football and you will overhear often people discussing it as you walk around... unlike most other places in Australia who have a life. The only redeeming features about Melbourne is apparently the nightlife is good, plenty of parties, and a few of my best friends live there. IF you absolutely HAVE to go to Melbourne then see a footy match but make sure you have warm clothes, umbrella, etc. because the weather is a joke and you get all four seasons in a day. I recommend you go to Sydney and then head North until you reach Cape Tribulation. ![]() Pompei, Campania Region, Italy ![]() Added Nov 20, 2008 Herculano is very close to Pompeii but it is worth seeing because this excavation has revealed much better preserved ruins compared to Pompeii. There is even painted designs on the walls and a small shrine to Neptune. ![]() L'Ile-Saint-Denis, France ![]() Added Nov 20, 2008 There is a small shop that makes and sells icecreams (glace) and sorbets... they come in 1 litre white boxes.... but they make an excellent icecream... especially the chocolate. ![]() Winchester, England, United Kingdom ![]() Added Nov 13, 2008 See King Arthur's round table with the names of his knights inscribed around the table; it is hooked up on one of the walls inside the cathedral. ![]() Neuilly-sur-Seine, Ile-de-France, France ![]() Added Nov 4, 2008 During the day this garden is the best in Paris. Plenty of carousels and rides (including pony rides) for kids. My favourite: try the gauffre au marron (waffles with chestnut paste and cream) or gauffres au chocolate (you got it - waffles with chocolate and cream). The most amazing gardens with a flower clock. Gloriously beautiful place to wander around. At night it is the main pickup place for prostitutes... they just move over to the bushes to do business... not at all a classy place... but the boys insisted on driving through and you got to see some of the most eye opening things going on in the bushes when the car's headlights lit them up. Plenty of night traffic cruising around the park. ![]() Brisbane, Queensland, Australia ![]() Added Nov 4, 2008 On Brunswick Street mall you get to watch the people traffic. The food is good, I recommend the Tandoori chicken salad with a couple of beers. Great coffee and cake selection. Everything you need for lunch or hangout with the girls. The vietnamese restaurant in the next mall up is good too. ![]() Port Douglas, Queensland, Australia ![]() Added Nov 2, 2008 My favourite place in Australia and about the best beaches you will find anywhere. North of Port Douglas; there are three choices of accomodation... two in the rainforest and one by the beach... I loved the one near the beach. All around this area the rainforest meets the reef... all very lush. ![]() Fannie Bay, Northern Territory, Australia ![]() Added Nov 2, 2008 There is a burger place in the main Darwin mall that sells emu burgers and croc burgers. Fanny Bay has plenty of pubs and restaurants about... the sunset is magic. Don't go swimming when there might be stingers... you can die. Oh, and there is a croc population explosion at the moment too and they pull a few crocs out of the bay every week... so maybe don't go swimming. ![]() New Orleans, Louisiana, United States ![]() Added Nov 2, 2008 This shop in the middle of town sells all kinds of voodoo spells, potions and paraphenalia. There is a big snake at the rear of the store too. So interesting! If you visit the cemetery there are sugar packets and coins on the voodoo queen's grave... don't touch or you will be cursed because they are payments for her spells from the grave. ![]() London, England, United Kingdom ![]() Added Nov 2, 2008 I love shopping, what else do I need to say. Harrods is my shopping Mecca. ![]() Mundaring, Western Australia, Australia ![]() Added Nov 2, 2008 Mundaring has a dam... a really big dam. A place to go swimming, picnicing and bushwalking around it. ![]() Brisbane, Queensland, Australia ![]() Added Nov 1, 2008 I took my friend who was visiting Brisbane to this place and she was so impressed by the food. It is well priced and along the river (near the riverside citycat stop not far from the Storey Bridge) and has plenty of tables outside to watch the passing people traffic. I have been there a few times and I reckon it beats the more expensive restaurants in this area. ![]() Bentley, Western Australia, Australia ![]() Added Nov 1, 2008 Plenty of open air cafes and restaurants on campus. Favourites are near the social science blocks... it is a really big campus surrounded by pine plantations. ![]() Uzwil, Northeastern Switzerland, Switzerland ![]() Added Nov 1, 2008 Of course I am a chocoholic... my cousins sent me off with a whole bunch of lindt chocolate. My favourite chocolate (for those chocolate connoiseurs who are interested in this stuff) is dutch chocolate. Everywhere in Switzerland is picture perfect... even the cemeteries are perfectly laid out (excuse the pun) and the gardens manicured within an inch of their life (oops, another one). I think the park in Uzwil is the one with the pair of black swans (from Western Australia) which my aunt was excited to show me a part of my own home; either there or the park is in Wil. ![]() Roleystone, Western Australia, Australia ![]() Added Nov 1, 2008 Australian native bush in all its glory. Some really nice swimming holes if you don't mind sharing it with some turtles and snakes. Roleystone has plenty of charming cafes that serve tea and scones and good restaurants. Western Australia doesn't have koalas in the bush but you can find them at the South Perth zoo and some other wildlife reserves around Perth. You will find plenty of birds, kangaroos and reptiles around. ![]() Orlando, Florida, United States ![]() Added Oct 9, 2008 Ok, just scratch the surface to find the kid in most of us or at least go to Disneyworld. Is there anything else to see in Orlando? I doubt it. Disney corporation has made a huge production line of disney products and it is called Disneyworld... the rides are good if you want to stand in a lot of lines. Extreme commercialism in a really tacky way... you get to walk all around the world, or at least highlights of it, in a reasonably small space of time. Mickey and Minnie and co are all walking about for photo ops and then there is ther castle. The kids would love it though... they don't worry about crass commercialism they just want the ride/toy/experience. It was kind of what I expected but worse... Disney is too serious a money-making business to laugh at it much. ![]() Beerwah, Queensland, Australia ![]() Added Oct 7, 2008 Isn't this about the only thing in Beerwah... there is no competition for the tourist dollar... and it is very, very expensive. The show and exhibits were very good though. There is regular transport to get you around the zoo. The kids rides are free, so I suppose we got our money's worth just there. It is really well set up and worth going... but probably just once. It seemed to me that people were also treating Bindi as another exhibit on her little island home... a reflection of her celebrity status I suppose but I felt very uncomfortable with that because she is still just a kid. ![]() Omaha, Nebraska, United States ![]() Added Oct 7, 2008 I think this is the photographic museum in Omaha that I liked so much. It showed a series of photos of people from the area of native indians of the region right through to present day residents in modern outfits... it really situated people in history and gave a sense of our own place in it... loved it. There is also a tram restaurant that serves a great breakfast near the town centre. ![]() Bath, England, United Kingdom ![]() Added Oct 7, 2008 Bath is such an interesting place if you are into history and the spendour of a bygone era. The whole place is like a living museum on show for tourists. Take a tour around the town... lots of stories. I loved the buildings with the fine Georgian and Queen Ann facades... often with a Mary Jane look at the back. I still have some replicas of the roman coins.. the souvenirs are quite good there... taste some of the miracle water at the restaurant in the Roman Baths. ![]() Rottnest Island, Western Australia, Australia ![]() Added Oct 7, 2008 Rottnest is the best party island I have ever been to... on all major holidays anyway but you have to book... the Quokka Arms is the only pub on the island. There is bike hire to ride around the island... no cars allowed (except the resident police and park ranger vehicles)... the best beaches are here. There are all kinds of accomodation from a camp site to luxury hotel. There is a very good bakery and some shops. Quokkas look like large hopping rodents and Quokka soccer is banned... don't do it. ![]() Colorado Springs, Colorado, United States ![]() Added Oct 7, 2008 The guy who runs the backpackers in Colorado Springs is such a dude... he picks you up in his pink Cadillac and he played a joke on us... we asked for an easy walk and he sent us on a 2 mile hike straight up a 1.5 mile high mountain... we made it though. The pool fed by the springs is really cool. In the winter this area is all snow skiing but in the summer it is about forest walks and hiking... beautiful area. ![]() Blarney, County Cork, Ireland ![]() Added Oct 7, 2008 Of course I kissed the Blarney stone... they hold you upside down and tipped backwards to do it. Interesting place... the stone is covered in lipstick though... yuck. The surrounds are green and lush... I enjoyed it. There is a souvenir shop worth looking at. ![]() Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, Canada ![]() Added Oct 7, 2008 The best part of Moose Jaw is leaving it. While I was mildly amused by such interesting names as Moose Jaw and Moose Head and decided that the people who named these towns were gifted with either comic genius or they had no higher functioning intellect and couldn't think of anything better... probably the latter. It is cold, COLD... BLOODY FREEZING!!!!!! However, it is all relative isn't it... I believe it was only about minus 30 degrees when we were there and when we left it dropped to minus 35 degrees. As a confirmed warm weather person there is no way I will ever go back there again. The only reason we were there was that my South African travel companion had met a guy in the visa line in Joberg and he was going to be working as a doctor in Moose Jaw... so she assured me he was fabulous and she had to meet up with him... what I do for friends! Having firmly learned my lesson I would not return even for a nighttime romp with George Clooney! Nothing to see here but cold people. ![]() Fitzroy Crossing, Western Australia, Australia ![]() Added Oct 7, 2008 This is pretty much a petrol station that serves food and is located in the middle of nowhere... they do have really cool bumper stickers though. In the NW of WA there isn't much luxury... roughing it is putting it mildly. Make sure you have an airconditioner in your car, a good map and plenty of water. Make certain your car is in good order... people's cars break down or they get lost in this area and they get stranded and die... even bush people. If you get stuck, stay with your car... sooner or later a truck (aka road train) will pass and flag them down... everyone helps everyone in this area because if they didn't there would be plenty more people dying up there. Gps tracker and emergency beacon would be an essential these days. ![]() Albany, New York, United States ![]() Added Oct 7, 2008 The Albany whaling station is a remnant of the whaling past of this area... apparently when it was in operation the whole area stunk to high heaven. They still have some of the guns they used to spear the whales with and stories from the locals... quite a dangerous occupation apparently. It is now all cleaned up and tourists can have alook around. The locals are still quite a rural lot... mostly friendly country folk. ![]() Edinburgh, Scotland, United Kingdom ![]() Added Oct 7, 2008 The annual performance by the Scottish pipers is worth seeing... a real throwback into history. The road leading up is all cobblestone and the tours are interesting. There is something intriguing about a man in a skirt! There is the usual accoutrement of shops selling tartan and scottish memorabilia. If you want some warm woollen stuff this is the place to find them. Holyrood House is worth seeing too... Mary Queen of Scots lived there and that tour is very interesting... this house is more beautiful but the castle isn't without its charms. ![]() Marbella, AndalucĂa Region, Spain ![]() Added Oct 7, 2008 Marbella is the place to go for the nightlife. Flamenco and tapas bars are filled with locals, including their kids util about 2-3am. I think the siesta enables Spain to be a cool party culture which is casual and friendly. Although drugs abound in this area locals try to protect their family members from those sort of excesses; I heard of a house full of dealers in this area being staked out by a large group of locals for several days because they were selling to their kids and they beat them to within an inch of their lives when they tried to escape their house. Have fun, party, play dominoes in the bar with a local, drink Sangria and I strongly suggest you leave the drug scene alone. ![]() Cannington, Western Australia, Australia ![]() Added Oct 3, 2008 It is the largest shopping centre in the southern hemisphere... for those who were born to shop this is the place. ![]() Lansing, Michigan, United States ![]() Added Oct 3, 2008 I enjoyed Lansing because I stayed with my friend Michelle at her Christmas tree farm; however, it is mostly really quiet and suburban. As a touristy place it doesn't really rate much but plenty of good people around. Michelle is a middle-class hippy woman who is into organic food and healthy 'earth mother' lifestyle so she introduced me to all the health food stores in the area... the little bakery that makes really heavy organic sourdough bread is really good. ![]() Shenzhen, Guangdong Province, China ![]() Added Oct 3, 2008 It was so interesting at the markets in Shenzhen, China. A guy was selling the traditional Chinese medicine products. The touristy souvenirs, like handpainted fans, were sold elsewhere... at a museum where you could buy a huge jade carving and a specialty tourist store near the dam. This market was the real deal where locals shopped and we arrived during the siesta time... so people were sleeping draped over their produce... including fish and raw meat.... so much for sanitary conditions. Organise a tour guide to see the best of this place. ![]() Sotogrande, Galicia Region, Spain ![]() Added Oct 2, 2008 This is a private beach club with a section of private beach, membership only, and every morning the tractor sifts through the sand and gets rid of all the needles that wash up on the beach through the night. All very clean and elegant with a nice restaurant. The Spanish elite and wealthy expats dine there too. Locals swim on either side of the private bit but there is a very real danger of stepping on needles... the people in Gibraltar throw their needles over the cliff and straight into the sea. ![]() Canberra, Australian Capital Territory, Australia ![]() Added Oct 2, 2008 The war memorial is well set up and interesting for all ages. Plenty of Aussie veterans around to answer questions. ![]() Basingstoke, England, United Kingdom ![]() Added Oct 1, 2008 The best part of Basingstoke is leaving it... there are plenty of really big roundabouts that may slow you down exiting this place. It is typical of most cities in southern England except it doesn't have anything to recommend it... there are some clubs we went to but nothing to rave about. The same shops as you would find anywhere in England... highly recommend that you bypass this one and move on the Winchester. ![]() Capri, Campania Region, Italy ![]() Added Oct 1, 2008 Capri is one of my favourite places. It is a haven of pleasant calm and comfort after the hectic pace of mainland Italy. The 2000 year old ruins of the Emporer Tiberius' castle are at the high end of the island and save your legs because the island can be traversed using the chair lift. The shopping is mostly exclusive boutiques and the beach is one of the nicest in Europe (even though it is a pebble beach). The hotels are REALLY nice and well priced. The blue hole is worth seeing too... it is a cave and you enter by boat at particular times of the day when the tide is lower. ![]() Queanbeyan, New South Wales, Australia ![]() Added Sep 29, 2008 I can't recall the name of it now but there is only one Thai restaurant on the main strip... Queanbeyan is quite small so it isn't too hard to find. It is well priced and the food is excellent. Friends, who dined out often, claimed it served better food than they had tasted anywhere in Canberra. Queanbeyan's claim to fame is that it is close to Canberra but on the NSW side of the border... it is more of a country town than an outlying suburb of Canberra. The winds can get very cold as they blow off the Snowy Mountains... dress warmly. ![]() Konstanz, Baden-Wurttemberg Region, Germany ![]() Added Sep 29, 2008 My aunt took me to visit an annual flower show at Lake Konstanz... the show is just one species of flower (which eludes me now) but it has many colours and varieties. Each plot was about 6 ft by 6ft and each plot was planted with the variety of the flower. The wander around the park was a riot of colour and there was also hedges cut in the shape of a rabbit and other animals. Like everything in this area everything is picture postcard perfect... amazing what a ton of money can do along with German efficiency. ![]() Siena, Tuscany Region, Italy ![]() Added Sep 28, 2008 Il Palio is a colourful annual horseracing event set in Siena. Siena itself is a beautiful medieval town, located near Florence, whose roads are lined with cobblestones. It is just a really charming town with an enormous amount of historical content and just doesn't seem touristy. It is really enjoyable just walking around exploring this place and soaking up the atmosphere.. ![]() Ventimiglia, Liguria Region, Italy ![]() Added Sep 27, 2008 Plenty of cheap and interesting stuff to buy... people buy their duty free alcohol and cigarettes on the Italian side of the border. Beware the organized gangs of pickpockets operating in the market place... make sure you keep your bag with your valuables close and zipped. Ventimiglia is charming and interesting to wander around it... not as wealthy as the French side. ![]() Banff, Alberta, Canada ![]() Added Sep 27, 2008 I don't really like cold weather, so the warmest and most sociable places in Banff were the locals bars. I recall finding moose hanging out in the carpark... that was a surprise. Apparently the Blue Lake is really lovely, but I would have had to leave my warm place in the bar to go and see it. I have no idea how I got convinced by Linda, lovely South African girl I travelled with on my second US/Canada trip, to drive from Banff to Vancouver... I wouldn't recommend that as a good idea now, but it seemed like a good idea at the time... right up until we were driving through a blizzard in minus 35 degree weather somewhere just after Moosejaw. I refuse to leave the sunny climates now... I have learned something about myself on that trip... I am a warm weather person and snow is seriously overrated! I did see a wolf running alongside the road though, that was cool... for a minute. ![]() Sankt Gallen, Northeastern Switzerland, Switzerland ![]() Added Sep 27, 2008 The most amazingly beautiful library with wooden carvings and baroque interior design. It used to be a monastery and holds some fascinating historical documents. My aunt, who lives in neighbouring Uzwil, took me to see it so I didn't take notice of exactly where it is located in the town... but it is pretty central... just ask. I was so impressed! It even beat the shopping trip and my aunt is a complete shopaholic. Things are REALLY expensive, or maybe my aunt has expensive taste, but St Gallen is the only place I have seen a plain grey skirt cost 300 swiss francs (equivalent to AUD), except in designer stores on the Champs Elysee in Paris. St Gallen is worth seeing, it is a really pretty city... most of Switzerland is picture postcard perfect... plenty of money there for the upkeep I suppose. ![]() Ivana V. commented... Added May 30, 2009 I find myself strangely attracted to your brain. ![]() Venice, Veneto Region, Italy ![]() Added Sep 26, 2008 One of my favourite cities in the world... so beautiful but you have to skip it in the summer when it smells and is overrun with tourists... the winter it floods too. I love the architecture and especially the area of town built by the moors. When locals direct you to take a taxi don't forget they are talking about a boat. Plenty of pizza restaurants and icecream places. I returned to Venice several times because it is so beautiful, but an Aussie girl I chatted with who worked there felt stifled by the strict rules and had to be chaparoned everywhere by a male family member of the house she worked in. Plenty of beautiful bridges and I recall one that had jewellers on both sides along it. I never did take a gondola... too cheesy for me! Historical buildings everywhere... have coffee in St Marcos square and chill. ![]() Bearsted, England, United Kingdom ![]() Added Sep 26, 2008 I worked in Bearsted for a few months... boring place. The constant grey skies and drizzling rain are the usual state of affairs... I had to use a sun bed just to thaw out. The people I worked for were lovely though... not much to do or see... couldn't wait for the weekend to get the train to London and stay with some student friends there and go nightclubbing. Yvonne actually tried to get me hooked on soapies when I was there... no a snowflake's chance in hell! I loathe soapies; always have, always will! If you want to be REALLY popular watch neighbours and everyone will ask what is going to happen... ridiculously popular there... and they could not believe that i had no idea and never watched Neighbours in Australia. ![]() Hong Kong Island, Hong Kong (SAR) ![]() Added Sep 26, 2008 Shopping in Hong Kong is the best! I bought really cheap silk blouses for $5aud and saw the same sort of thing in London for 250 pounds. I didn't really enjoy bargaining for everything and prices go up when they see a tourist coming. I bought some nice gold stuff and pearls, but the biggest bargains are the furniture and clothing... organize a container to ship it back and it is still cheaper. Of course you get a lot of pirated cds... my friend bought a Kylie Minogue cd and the chinese girl sang 'I should be so rucky, rucky, rucky, rucky...' Great for a laugh at the next bbq... all of the copied stuff could be confiscated at customs though. The ferry to Kowloon is also really cheap. If you go further into China people tend to really STARE at foreigners and that is really unnerving... but Hong Kong people are used to foreigners and just cruise about their normal life. Get a tour guide to go into China... it is a completely different experience. Our HK guide was a real instigator and got our group to get a group photo under the no photo sign at the train station and there was a guard with a machine gun slung over his shoulder desperately waving and running at us shouting no photo, no photo in the background of the photos. I went to HK before it was handed back to the Chinese... not sure of the changes since then. I assume HK people conform more than before. ![]() Oxford, England, United Kingdom ![]() Added Sep 26, 2008 Take the bus tour around the town. If I remember rightly there is a special bun that is only made there... it is quite good... but it is still a bun. Plenty of places for scones and tea and all VERY historic. I also did a river tour too.. that was fine too. Walk around the university, I was trying to find a yank friend of mine (Hi Peter) who was studying Chinese culture there at the time... he did end up with a very posh English accent for quite a while. Plenty of nice little speciality shops for touristy shopping all over selling stuff from handmade lace to teddy bears/dolls. ![]() Perth, Western Australia, Australia ![]() Added Sep 25, 2008 I am a Perth girl and it is hard to choose a favourite place... London Court is on the Hay Street Mall (main shopping area) and is very charming. As kids we used to wait around to watch the London Court clock chime the hour to watch the mechanism (I think they are two jousting knights with lances). Cottesloe is the best beach in the world I have seen so far. The wine tours up the Swan River are amazing. ![]() Broadbeach, Queensland, Australia ![]() Added Sep 25, 2008 At the GC the beaches are OK I suppose... but still pretty crap compared to north Queensland and Perth. If you like shopping, and what girl doesn't like shopping?, then head to Pacific Fair. It is a bit upmarket with some designer shops but pretty good for coffee and spending. ![]() Bermuda ![]() Added Sep 25, 2008 St George is pretty much suburbs and parks. It is pretty quick to get around Bermuda on your moped and the beaches are pretty nice all over the island. St George is used by locals to escape the tourist traffic in Hamilton. There is a ferry that leaves Hamilton to get you to St George. ![]() Dublin, Dublin & Surrounds, Ireland ![]() Added Sep 25, 2008 Really friendly and really interesting pub life in the old part of town. Some of them have locals regularly turning up with their instruments to play traditional music. I got taken to a gaelic football match too... kind of like a mix of Aussie rules football and soccer. ![]() Austin, Texas, United States ![]() Added Sep 25, 2008 The walk along the river is really nice and my friend, Ralph, designed the t-shirts for the bridge with the bats... sort of a local landmark. Softball games are taken quite seriously too... good to watch. ![]() Marbella, AndalucĂa Region, Spain ![]() Added Sep 25, 2008 You get to see the locals do Flamenco dancing and you join in and give it a go too... the music is so cool! I have to mention my regular hangout whenever I went to Spain, Jose's Bar on the coast. Plenty of families out and about with their kids running around until about 2am. ![]() Pango, Vanuatu ![]() Added Sep 24, 2008 Pango Village is located near Vila, Efate Island, Vanuatu. While some intrepid surfer dudes have discovered Pango beach they like to keep it as their own secret. The village is going to set up for budget travellers and I spoke to them about setting up a surf club. Pango has the best surf in Vanuatu. ![]() Boston, Massachusetts, United States ![]() Added Sep 22, 2008 One of my favourite museums ever, art deco building and just really elegant and a visual treat throughout. This is a must see if you are ever in Boston. ![]() Fremantle, Western Australia, Australia ![]() Added Sep 22, 2008 Located along the main strip in Freo, there is a Fast Eddy's in Perth and Freo, and serves the best hot chocolate fudge sundae. The girls and I would head to Fast Eddy's at 3am for the sundae because it is that good and addictive (although I am a confirmed chocoholic). Good food, good prices and relaxed atmosphere. ![]() Denver, Colorado, United States ![]() Added Sep 20, 2008 A clean city but pretty much like any other American city. The old guy at the train station was really nice and helpful but essentially Denver is on the way to Colorado Springs... one of my favourite places. ![]() Menton, Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur, France ![]() Added Sep 20, 2008 This is the final stop along the French riviera before crossing the border into the more conservative Italy. I visited in 1989 and the beaches had an array of women topless sunbathing and in the nightclubs body painting naked women was all the fashion... interesting, but not for me. The usual assortment of really good French cafes and restaurants. At that time my French wasn't very good and not many people speak English that well... so it was a bit challenging linguistically. We stayed in a chateau up the hill near the border and the locals were helpful and happy to give us lifts into the town. I think there are more problems with gangs of pickpockets in the Ventimiglia markets than in Menton... get cheaper alcohol on the Italian side of the border. The lights of Menton are lovely, especially watching it from the rooftop sipping Campari and orange. ![]() Sydney, New South Wales, Australia ![]() Added Sep 20, 2008 I lived in Sydney for a couple of years and the harbour is the best of Sydney on display. The Chinese Gardens are gorgeous and you can get photographed in traditional chinese costume... at least my son did. Plenty of festivals, entertainment and cafes in this area. The aquarium is ok... better aquariums in Perth though. Sydneysiders, aka cockroaches, are generally friendly and helpful. The powerhouse museum was my son's favourite place. ![]() Paris, Ile-de-France, France ![]() Added Sep 20, 2008 I lived in Paris for two years and loved it... just walking around is a visual treat. Go to the Louvre and then a cafe called Angelinas is nearby... very classy and delicious. My other favourite museum is Musee Rodin. Best time of year to see Paris is spring or winter (around Christmas) but definitely NOT summer... most French people close up shop and leave it to the hoards of tourists. French bakeries are the best in the world. There is an icecream shop on Ile St Louis worth trying and I know a great cheese shop in Neully-sur-Seine... all the little specialty shops are less convenient than supermarkets but it is the French way of shopping. Shopping in the Champs Elysee and Galleries Lafayette is expensive but such a treat. Go down the Seine on a Baton Mouche river boat. So much to see... my favourite place. Beware the many North African guys who try to hook up with unsuspecting female tourists, a friend of mine was attacked by one when they reached a less busy area and luckily escaped... best not to take the risk and send them on their way quickly. ![]() Maat, Vanuatu ![]() Added Sep 20, 2008 Mele-Maat is located directly opposite the Cascades waterfalls. See Pastor Fred Weiran at the Presbyterian Church or Rosmi Lik about living in traditional natangura accomodation in the village. This is the first village in Vanuatu that is setting up for backpacker tourism. Ask to see their gardens and join in with village life. Pacific island church services last 3 to 4 hours so take a drink and snacks. Locals will prepare laplap and all locally prepared food is direct from their own gardens and cheap. People are unbelievably friendly and kind. Scenery is gorgeous! There is an entry fee to the Cascades, which is currently owned and managed by a Mele family. Chief David is the acting-chief of Mele-Maat and if you like the traditional gift to show respect to any chief is a live chicken (or some material which locals call calico will suffice too), 1kg of kava and a mat (all purchased at the local market in Vila). Cheap spectacles are always welcome as gifts too (so the elders can read their bibles). There are plenty of tourist attractions in this areas too; such as horse riding, a cultural museum called the secret gardens, Hideaway Island where you can scuba dive, swim and snorkel is walking distance. I advise wearing island dress to show respect for local culture and people will really open their hearts to you then. ![]() Las Vegas, Nevada, United States ![]() Added Sep 19, 2008 Hilarious! Pawn shops, cheap motels and quickie marriage chapels line the strip. I laughed my way all along it. I especially loved the candlelight chapel with a huge neon candle at the front with a flame shooting up... how romantic! Plenty of expensive hotels where you can sit around their flash pools and look like you belong. ![]() Winchester, England, United Kingdom ![]() Added Sep 19, 2008 Winchester Cathederal is the main attraction. I recall it has the round table hanging on a wall inside the cathederal... maybe a copy of the original at least. If you like history then this is the place to be. There is a walk you can do around the town. ![]() Coogee, New South Wales, Australia ![]() Added Sep 19, 2008 Really nice atmosphere without the hype. Nice pubs and cafes close by. The Spot is a good place to chill out too and that is just up the hill from the beach... there is a cheap art deco cinema there. ![]() Hamilton, Bermuda ![]() Added Sep 19, 2008 Front Street is the main shopping strip and the shop owners are known as the forty thieves... very expensive. Bermuda Aquarium and Zoo is in this district and is worth a visit. Check at what time of the year the locals worms are mating because for a few days they glow with fluorescence when you touch them and sparkle. A friendly international rugby competition is held around November and there is much partying for a couple of weeks. Make friends with locals and you may get an invitation to one of the local parties where they rope together hundreds of boats and drink ridiculous amounts of Black Seal rum... it happens a couple of times a year. Local drink is a Dark and Stormy. ![]() Perth, Scotland, United Kingdom ![]() Added Sep 19, 2008 Simply the best beach in the world... finest white sand and beautiful clean water. ![]() Paris, Ile-de-France, France ![]() Added Sep 19, 2008 Business district but has the best shopping without the hefty prices found in central Paris. For chic clothing stores and top of the line cosmetics in wholesale chemists it is the place to shop on a budget. ![]() Perth, Scotland, United Kingdom ![]() Added Sep 19, 2008 Best beach in the world... no doubts! The surf club is near the beach and it houses food outlets and a restaurant. The sand is very fine and white, the water clear and the waves are good for learning to surf and body surf in.
