Page 1 of 10 My Reviews![]() Phumi Spean Angkor, Cambodia ![]() Added Apr 15, 2009 A great place to relax and watch people streaming into the main temple at Angkor. I have been there both times I went for sunrise at the temples. The pancakes were fabulous! ![]() Brasov, Transylvania, Romania ![]() Added Apr 15, 2009 The castle of Vlad the Impaler. Any visit to Romania would not be complete without a little sideline to check out all things Dracula. ![]() Sinaia, Southern Romania (Valahia), Romania ![]() Added Apr 15, 2009 Go to Peles castle to see the painting done by Gustav Klimt when he was still an unknown. Great scenery. ![]() Brasov, Transylvania, Romania ![]() Added Apr 15, 2009 A pretty interesting little town. We some time here using it as a home base for exploring the nearby areas. Worth a stop. ![]() Ocho Rios, Middlesex (Central Jamaica), Jamaica ![]() Added Apr 15, 2009 Right on the water. The food is what you would expect, but the fun part was playing in the ocean outside the restaurant. They have trampolines and a slide that goes straight into the ocean. ![]() Akumal, Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico ![]() Added Apr 15, 2009 Gorgeous clear water and we saw a ton of sea turtles! The schools of fish were also really impressive. ![]() Akumal, Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico ![]() Added Apr 15, 2009 Beautiful and great snorkeling to be had here! We saw 6 sea turtles when we snorkeled off the beach. ![]() Berlin, Berlin Region, Germany ![]() Added Apr 15, 2009 You must see the wall if you are in Berlin. I loved seeing the portion where artists have taken over and reclaimed this monument to a time gone by. ![]() Berlin, Berlin Region, Germany ![]() Added Apr 15, 2009 I liked this zoo and it started a family tradition of visiting zoos around the world! ![]() Czech Republic ![]() Added Apr 15, 2009 I still found this to be a fun place to visit. Very historic and artsy all at the same time. ![]() Prague, Central Bohemia Region, Czech Republic ![]() Added Apr 15, 2009 Such a fun thing to go and see and it is in a cool area of Prague to check out. A two-fer! ![]() Sedlec, Central Bohemia Region, Czech Republic ![]() Added Apr 15, 2009 Such a crazy fascinating place. I agree, a bit morbid, but so artistic and with a really interesting history!! ![]() Prague, Central Bohemia Region, Czech Republic ![]() Added Apr 15, 2009 Gorgeous old city and lots to do and see. The areas surrounding the city are also great to visit (there are lots of day trips). Highly recommended!! ![]() Prague, Central Bohemia Region, Czech Republic ![]() Added Apr 15, 2009 Beautiful bridge, but the best part are the artists and musicians that are lining the bridge. It felt so alive! ![]() Prague, Central Bohemia Region, Czech Republic ![]() Added Apr 15, 2009 Loved this place. Great views, beautiful architecture. Well worth a few hours. ![]() Lyon, Rhone-Alpes, France ![]() Added Apr 15, 2009 Beautiful views and a very beautiful church. A must see if you are in Lyon. ![]() Paris, Ile-de-France, France ![]() Added Apr 15, 2009 Very fun to walk along and people watch! ![]() Paris, Ile-de-France, France ![]() Added Apr 15, 2009 Is it bad that my favorite part of visiting the Eiffel tower was watching the old men playing bocci ball below it? IT was so picturesque with the tower in the background. Well worth checking out. ![]() Paris, Ile-de-France, France ![]() Added Apr 15, 2009 There will never be another chance in history for a museum to accumulate the kinds of antiquities and art that the Louvre has within its walls. The collections are amazing and it is like taking a journey through time and around the world when you visit this museum. ![]() Dargaville, North Island, New Zealand ![]() Added Apr 9, 2009 One of the few places to see the kauri trees that used to cover New Zealand. It is fascinating to step into the forest here and feel you have been transported to another time when the trees were enormous and moa still roamed the land. Tane Mahuta, the biggest of the trees is awe inspiring. ![]() Thames, North Island, New Zealand ![]() Added Apr 9, 2009 We went on this trail at a slightly off time of year and were rewarded by having almost the whole hut to ourselves. The hut is huge, so if you pick a high season you may end up surrounded by school kids. This hike takes 3 -4 hours up to the top and you are rewarded with fantastic views in all directions. The old kauri forests that were here have been completely logged out and it is so sad and fascinating to see how they did it and hear the legends. There are places you can get inside an old stump of a kauri tree and really feel just how large these trees really were. I highly recommend this trail. ![]() Russell, North Island, New Zealand ![]() Added Apr 9, 2009 This area is unlike anywhere else in NZ. It has the most amazing beaches and taking a dolphin watching trip into the bay is a must. Also has a fascinating history of whaling. You can hike out to an old whaling station which is pretty crazy to see. ![]() Bangkok, Central Thailand, Thailand ![]() Added Apr 9, 2009 This is such a cool place to spend a day wandering around. And be sure to stop in at the old Siam plaza and get some freshly made sweets, they have so many kinds. For 20 baht you can sample any of them, but I recommend sampling lots of them!! ![]() Ko Phangan, Thailand Gulf, Thailand ![]() Added Apr 9, 2009 Oh debauchery why are you so fun?? This was unlike anything I have ever done...and it was so crazy! A must do once in your life. ![]() Krabi, Andaman Coast, Thailand ![]() Added Apr 9, 2009 The whitest sand and bluest water. Exploring these in a longtail boat is so amazing and its fu to get out there and snorkel too! ![]() Ko Samui, Thailand Gulf, Thailand ![]() Added Apr 9, 2009 Touristy, but great fun. A nice place for a beach break. ![]() Bangkok, Central Thailand, Thailand ![]() Added Apr 9, 2009 I had not been here in years and recently went back. The temple itself is beautiful and it is incredible to walk around the Grand Palace. The architecture and the details are amazing. ![]() Bangkok, Central Thailand, Thailand ![]() Added Apr 9, 2009 This place was completely fascinating. It is one of only 2 in the world, the other being outside Sao Paulo in Brazil. I have visited both and this one is really well set up and informative. Fascinating to watch the venom extraction technique they use and the museum is really informative. Well worth and afternoon. But, beware the prices listed in Lonely Planet are completely out of date, Thailand has raised fees on many of its attractions. ![]() Fortaleza, Northeastern Brazil, Brazil ![]() Added Apr 9, 2009 Watching the moon rise form the dunes, walking the dusty streets this town is so friendly and just, well, cool. Great place to get lost for a little while. ![]() Foz do Iguacu, Southern Brazil, Brazil ![]() Added Apr 9, 2009 I absolutely love these waterfalls. I prefer the Argentinian side, but the Brazilian side is really cool also. I have never seen so many different types of butterflies, swirled and patterned and brightly colored! And the walks amongst the falls are amazing. Give yourself several days to just explore both sides of the falls. ![]() Rio de Janeiro, Southeastern Brazil, Brazil ![]() Added Apr 9, 2009 we accidentally ended up here after hopping on the wrong bus. You should be very careful about walking without someone local through the favelas, as it can be dangerous. But, if you can find a local to take you it can be a really rewarding experience. I experienced it in some of the small towns and people really did seem quite happy and friendly. ![]() Costa Rica ![]() Added Apr 8, 2009 The country of Costa Rica has so so many beautiful places, but San Jose is just a biggish city. I recommend getting in and getting out to the countryside. ![]() Tortuguero, Carribean Coast, Costa Rica ![]() Added Apr 8, 2009 The area is beautiful and you can canoe through the park. Also, the beach has nesting sea turtles which just kinda rules!! ![]() Fortuna, Central Valley & Highlands, Costa Rica ![]() Added Apr 8, 2009 I was so excited to see the lava flows, unfortunately it was cloudy when I was there and you couldn't see anything. I have seen photos of it on clear days and it looks amazing! ![]() Quepos, Pacific Coast, Costa Rica ![]() Added Apr 8, 2009 Great wildlife viewing and a beautiful beach! I loved this area!!!! ![]() Muang Vangviang, Laos ![]() Added Apr 8, 2009 Fun day on the water, though someone told me it has gotten pretty touristy in the last couple of years. ![]() Vientiane, Laos ![]() Added Apr 8, 2009 I thought this market was good, not the best in SE Asia, but good. I preferred the night market in Luang Prabang or the markets in Bangkok. ![]() Luang Prabang, Northern Laos, Laos ![]() Added Apr 8, 2009 I haven't been here in a few years, but I absolutely loved the town when I was there. The area is so rich in history and the night market was great! ![]() Lijiang, Yunnan Province, China ![]() Added Apr 8, 2009 A great little town to wander around. There are a ton of tourists, but they are primarily Chinese, so somehow it doesnt feel like a tourist trap. The old city is quite beautiful, stone paths and gorgeous old buildings. ![]() Yangshu, Shaanxi Province, China ![]() Added Apr 8, 2009 Beautiful area, but beware of scams. If you are going to rent bikes or boats do it from your hotel. Trust me. ![]() Chengdu, Sichuan Province, China ![]() Added Apr 8, 2009 This place was fascinating. We were there in the morning and they were doing the feedings, which was great to see. They are doing a lot of breeding work and research. Go watch the crazy video of a panda giving birth, it is amazing these animals have survived as long as they have!! The mother is swatting at the newborn baby like it is a toy!! ![]() Beijing, Beijing Province, China ![]() Added Apr 8, 2009 The best time of day to be there (in my opinion) is early in the morning when the city is just waking up. The children flying kites, the hazy morning sunshine, the city just starting a new day. Magic. ![]() Nelson, South Island, New Zealand ![]() Added Apr 7, 2009 Drive from Queenstown to this little gem. Great mt. views and a perfect place to have a meal and head out on a hike! ![]() Nelson, South Island, New Zealand ![]() Added Apr 7, 2009 If i could live anywhere in NZ this would be it. I absolutely adore this town. Near Abel Tasmen and Blenheim (yummy wine!) and with a cool artsy vibe and the most sun of anywhere in the country. Nelson is amazing. ![]() Taupo, North Island, New Zealand ![]() Added Apr 7, 2009 An unbelievable amount of water flows through here at any one time. The water is absolutely the bluest and the roar of the falls is pretty darn fantastic. ![]() Tralee, County Kerry, Ireland ![]() Added Apr 7, 2009 we stayed in an old hunting lodge (mansion) turned into a guesthouse and had a roaring fire and lots of great conversation. That made the sideways rain seem ok somehow. ![]() An Daingean, County Kerry, Ireland ![]() Added Apr 7, 2009 I wondered if he was still around. He was there hanging out near Dingle when we visited 10 years ago! ![]() Gaillimh, County Galway, Ireland ![]() Added Apr 7, 2009 Oh Aran Islands, how do I love thee? They are so relaxing and a bit removed from the modern world of Ireland. I would go back in a heartbeat. ![]() Dublin, Dublin & Surrounds, Ireland ![]() Added Apr 7, 2009 lovely spot to have a wander or a rest while touring around. ![]() Dublin, Dublin & Surrounds, Ireland ![]() Added Apr 7, 2009 Fun to walk around and explore, but I really preferred the smaller towns in Ireland. ![]() Dharmsala, Himalayan North, India ![]() Added Apr 7, 2009 We saw a teaching by the Dalai Lama here and it was so so unbelievable. I really like this monastery. Very Tibetan feel and a very active place of worship. ![]() Dharmsala, Himalayan North, India ![]() Added Apr 7, 2009 A fun walk up from town. We met a lot of interesting folks on the way up. I really like that a lot of the tourists that we met here were from India. The falls are ok, but it was a great little outing. ![]() Varanasi, North-Central Plains, India ![]() Added Apr 7, 2009 If you truly want to learn about the Hindu culture this is a good place. It is really important to be respectful of the fact this is a family with someone they loved. I felt like a lot of people forgot that as they took photos or gawked. ![]() Pushkar, Rajasthan, India ![]() Added Apr 7, 2009 Pushkar is good to visit, but we stayed a little longer than I would have liked. It has a very hippy backpacker flare which for some means they want to hang out here for weeks. For me, I would rather see the smaller villages. ![]() Dalhousie, Himalayan North, India ![]() Added Apr 7, 2009 Absolutely loved this area!!! It is so beautiful, the people are friendly and you can hike into here. Plus how stinking fun is it to see people ZORBing in the center of everything? They roll down the hills in plastic balls while the horses and dogs mill around. It made for an entertaining afternoon of watching it all happen! ![]() Chennai, Southeastern India, India ![]() Added Apr 7, 2009 A huge city. It has some fascinating history and definitely a bit nicer for being on the shore, but a huge city. I prefer the smaller places in India. From Chennai you can easily get to Pondicherry, which is a really cool colonial town or mamallapurum (sp??) to see the rock carvings. ![]() Orchha, North-Central Plains, India ![]() Added Apr 7, 2009 A great business that helps support locals by giving them jobs at fair wages. I bought a few lovely handmade paper stars that I have hanging in my office and they make me smile whenever I look at them. ![]() New Delhi, Delhi & Surrounding Region, India ![]() Added Apr 7, 2009 What an amazing place. Right in the center of Delhi's craziness here is a moment of calm and beauty. You do have to pay if you want to bring in a camera, so if you don't intend on taking pictures leave the camera in your bag. ![]() Varanasi, North-Central Plains, India ![]() Added Apr 7, 2009 Highly recommended for a glimpse of India's unique culture and rituals. But, be prepared for the craziness that is Varanasi. ![]() Khajuraho, North-Central Plains, India ![]() Added Apr 7, 2009 Fascinating in India to see such detailed erotic temples. The carvings are so well wrought and the stone is beautiful. But, I agree a guide is a must! ![]() Khajuraho, North-Central Plains, India ![]() Added Apr 7, 2009 I really liked visiting the temples in Khajuraho. They were very different than other temples I had seen and the preservation work is excellent. But there are millions of touts outside, so prepare yourself! ![]() New Delhi, Delhi & Surrounding Region, India ![]() Added Apr 7, 2009 I like Connaught Place. It is a good area of Delhi to stay in because it is very easy to navigate, there are lots of places to eat and great people watching (especially on the weekend). It is also fairly close to some of the area attractions like museums, the India gate, the Gandhi museum (free!). ![]() Khajuraho, North-Central Plains, India ![]() Added Apr 6, 2009 I was so excited to visit this "tiger reserve" only to find out all but ONE tiger has been poached from the reserve. The government has plans to reintroduce some tigers from other areas of India, but still so so sad! We did see a lot of other wildlife, including multiple kinds of deer, monkeys, tons of birds, etc. but still wish they didn't bill it as a tiger park! ![]() Jaipur, Rajasthan, India ![]() Added Apr 6, 2009 I absolutely loved this fort. It is a bit out of the city, so be prepared to haggle for transport. But, well worth the effort. We hired a local guide outside the gates and that turned out to be really worthwhile, he had a lot of knowledge and it really enriched our experience. It is great fun to watch the parade of elephants carrying tourists to the top. They take photos of everyone and then try to sell them when the people head back down. We walked both directions, but they still tried to sell us photos...just of someone we didn't know!! Gotta love it! ![]() Jaipur, Rajasthan, India ![]() Added Apr 6, 2009 Beautiful place and from the top of the palace you get really interesting views down to the town of Jaipur. We had a great time interacting with the staff who were doing some construction/reconstruction here. ![]() Agra, North-Central Plains, India ![]() Added Apr 6, 2009 For a look at the real India the train is a wonderful place to be. It can get frustrating when you are constantly harassed, but it is a great place to meet locals and to watch the scenery passing by. The overnight trains are actually reasonably comfortable, but I recommend going at least 2nd class if you want to have a comfortable bed! ![]() Amritsar, North-Central Plains, India ![]() Added Apr 6, 2009 I absolutely loved visiting this temple. It is stunningly beautiful, especially around dusk. And, everyone was so open and friendly. For a really special meal be sure to head to the far side of the complex and partake and in the free meal they offer to anyone who is hungry. They feed thousands of people every day and the whole operation is volunteer staffed. ![]() Cincinnati, Ohio, United States ![]() Added Apr 6, 2009 Great roller coasters and something for all ages. A really fun place to spend a day! ![]() Palma de Mallorca, Balearic Islands, Spain ![]() Added Apr 5, 2009 A nice city, but just a city. Get out and see some of the further out parts of the island for a more classical Mallorca experience. ![]() Arenal, Northwestern Costa Rica, Costa Rica ![]() Added Apr 5, 2009 Hot springs with swim up bars? Now that is just good fun. We had a blast going from pool to pool and hiding under the waterfalls! ![]() Bangkok, Central Thailand, Thailand ![]() Added Apr 5, 2009 A good cause and excellent Thai food and instead of a mint, a condom! This restaurant is great fun and with good enough food to merit a return trip!! ![]() Myanmar (Burma) ![]() Added Apr 5, 2009 They claim 100% satisfaction or you don't pay at this restaurant. My first night there I had a lovely veg thali served on a banana leaf with little extra chutneys and was really happy. So, I came back a few nights later with 2 friends in tow and we again had thalis. But, this time the food was average or below average. So, I would call this one hit or miss. ![]() Yangon, Yangon & surrounds, Myanmar (Burma) ![]() Added Apr 5, 2009 A more expensive option ($20-25 US) in Yangon, but the location can not be beat. It is right across the street from the bogyoke market and near lots of restaurants and attractions. You can also walk from here to the main pagoda. The rooms are fine, very clean and they have tv with a few english stations. Breakfast is included and is a really good buffet. ![]() Mandalay, Central Myanmar, Myanmar (Burma) ![]() Added Apr 5, 2009 A fine place to stay, no bells and whistles but at $17 a night a good midrange option in Mandalay. They provide breakfast on the rooftop terrace, the rooms are clean and the staff was friendly and helpful. There is one computer that can sporadically be used to check email. ![]() San Francisco, California, United States ![]() Added Apr 5, 2009 I loved this museum. They have a great variety of artwork, the displays are well organized and the cafeteria has unbelievable food!! ![]() Varanasi, North-Central Plains, India ![]() Added Apr 4, 2009 I agree that you either love or hate Varanasi and the Ganges. I am in the latter category. It was so so dirty and the river water is so polluted. It was fascinating to see the ancient cultural practices still in play here, but I think there is something really odd about being a tourist in an area famous for funereal cremations. ![]() Bangkok, Central Thailand, Thailand ![]() Added Apr 4, 2009 I had always wanted to go and see a muay thai fight, but had never made it. The last time I was in Bangkok I finally made it and it was really really fun. Not nearly as violent as I thought it would be and the stadium is fairly tiny. We sat in the third class seats with the riff raff and the bookies. i loved watching the chaos and betting. ![]() Bangkok, Central Thailand, Thailand ![]() Added Apr 4, 2009 This is a really small area, but really cool to see. I had a guy grab me and run me through the alleyways to show me all of the different steps that go into making the bowls. It is quite a process! Don't be fooled into thinking you have seen the whole area by the person who has set up shop on the corner outside the alleyways, keep going...it is well worth it!! ![]() Yangon, Yangon & surrounds, Myanmar (Burma) ![]() Added Apr 4, 2009 A great place to see what kinds of crafts and jewels are available in Burma. Also, fabulous for people watching. If you have a chance have lunch in the middle of the market. The food is good and we had a lot of fun watching the world go by from our seats! ![]() Yangon, Yangon & surrounds, Myanmar (Burma) ![]() Added Apr 4, 2009 The temple was amazing in the early evening, just at sunset and right after. It felt like being in a small town there were so many locals there praying and hanging out. Unfortunately it is under construction right now, but it is still really wonderful!! ![]() Yawnghwe, Eastern Myanmar, Myanmar (Burma) ![]() Added Mar 13, 2009 The sisters are what make this guesthouse something special. they are so sweet and man can they cook! Eat dinner in the restaurant and you won't be disappointed. The rooms are basic, but clean and more than adequate. I would give it 5 stars, but it is on the canal so the mornings can be a bit noisy. The sisters can arrange anything you want to do in town, boats, canoes, bikes, laundry...you name it! ![]() Mandalay, Central Myanmar, Myanmar (Burma) ![]() Added Mar 13, 2009 An important show to see, if only to hear the only people in Myanmar that will criticize the government. They present the shows nightly in the front room of their home. It includes political humor, jokes about their long-term incarcerations (2 of the 3 have done major jail time for their humor), and traditional dance. Surreal to see the photos of Aung San Suu Kyi all over the walls, also the only place in Burma you will ever see that. ![]() Inle Lake, Myanmar (Burma) ![]() Added Mar 13, 2009 So beautiful and the canals that surround the lake are so serene. It is fascinating to watch people go about their daily lives on the water, paddling between homes and fishing in the most beautiful traditional ways. Plus, as a bonus, where else can you go to a monastery where the cats jump through hoops? ![]() Denver, Colorado, United States ![]() Added Dec 9, 2008 The food here is fantastic. The restaurant has an old-fashioned diner feel, with fun decor. I highly recommend the macaroni and cheese with bacon! And great spaghetti and meatballs! They also have a big drinks menu. ![]() Columbus, Ohio, United States ![]() Added Nov 8, 2008 This market is great. It is like an indoor farmer's market (and in the spring-fall they have a weekend farmers market outside the building, which is really affordable and features some great produce and flowers.) You can buy bread, veggies, cheese, honey, homemade ice cream and any number of other things here. They also have food stalls selling prepared foods if you need a snack, last time I was here there was a Mexican stall, Indian, Greek, pasta, Vietnamese and more. Highly recommended especially on a Saturday morning. ![]() Boulder, Colorado, United States ![]() Added Nov 6, 2008 Great food and quite lovely, especially in the summer when you can sit outside next to the river. ![]() Tulum, Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico ![]() Added Nov 5, 2008 The ruins at Tulum are not very big, but they are interesting and very easily accessible. There is a tiny beach tucked into the ruins with the bluest water and iguanas roam everywhere. In fact, I saw a guy sleeping on the beach and an iguana was walking right between his legs! We woke him up and his immediate reaction was (as any good tourist would) to grab his camera, not to move! ![]() Johannesburg, Gauteng Province, South Africa ![]() Added Nov 5, 2008 I liked visiting Soweto because I felt like I got much more of a sense of Jo'burg and those that live there. I also really liked seeing Nelson Mandela's old house. the history in this township is rich and fascinating. ![]() Columbus, Ohio, United States ![]() Added Nov 4, 2008 I can spend hours wandering around this book store. There are 32 rooms each with a different theme in a rambling old house. ![]() Denver, Colorado, United States ![]() Added Nov 4, 2008 I love the atmosphere at this restaurant. There is a cool garden out the back with a ger and the interior decorations are fantastic. The food is good. Though some meals I have had here have been better than others. They offer sushi as well as lots of other dishes. ![]() Denver, Colorado, United States ![]() Added Nov 4, 2008 When my cat was lost, they were so wonderful, posting his picture and keeping in touch. they do great work. ![]() Burnside, Kentucky, United States ![]() Added Nov 4, 2008 If you can get a group together, rent a houseboat and spend a few days cruising the lake. It is so fun. ![]() Colorado, Alaska, United States ![]() Added Nov 4, 2008 A cute little town and a great ski resort. ![]() Nashville, Tennessee, United States ![]() Added Nov 4, 2008 One of the best festivals I have ever attended. I saw so much music it was mind numbing! The music/happenings go all day and almost all night. ![]() Hāna, Maui, United States ![]() Added Nov 4, 2008 Once upon a time you could camp right next to these pools, now it is down the road. But, still amazing. The pools have ledges to jump from and empty into the ocean at the bottom. Really fun. ![]() Washington, District of Columbia, United States ![]() Added Nov 4, 2008 Never more beautiful than when the cherry trees are blooming. Quintessentially Washington, D.C.! ![]() Moab, Utah, United States ![]() Added Nov 4, 2008 Some of the best mt. biking in Moab! I am too scared to do it, but my husband loves it! ![]() Kula, Maui, United States ![]() Added Nov 4, 2008 Great place to have a meal. Good views and good food. ![]() Maui, Maui, United States ![]() Added Nov 4, 2008 Fancy fancy area to stay, but there are some really beautiful beaches, all of which are public access. ![]() Fort Klamath, Oregon, United States ![]() Added Nov 4, 2008 The water in the lake is the most amazing color of blue. And it is really cool to see Wizard island where it is forming in the center. If you camp here be cautious of bears. I heard a story from a ranger a few years back about a guy who took a nap in a hammock with cherry chapstick on and woke up to a bear licking his lips!! ![]() Chicago, Illinois, United States ![]() Added Nov 4, 2008 Great museum!! I saw a traveling Ansel Adams exhibit here that was unbelievable! Great Asian art section. ![]() Sandusky, Ohio, United States ![]() Added Nov 4, 2008 If you love rollercoasters Cedar Point is a blast! Right on the lake, which is an added bonus. ![]() Hāna, Maui, United States ![]() Added Nov 4, 2008 Volcanic rock (basalt) that has weathered to form the sand on this extraordinary beach. There is also a red sand beach, which is really cool. ![]() Chicago, Illinois, United States ![]() Added Nov 4, 2008 It was fun to go the top and see the views. Something you should do once, but don't bother if the weather is bad! ![]() Vail, Colorado, United States ![]() Added Nov 4, 2008 A huge ski resort. This is one of the best places I have ever skiied. It is a bit expensive, but if you can swing it, well worth it!! ![]() Washington, District of Columbia, United States ![]() Added Nov 4, 2008 This simple and powerful memorial is so powerful. I recommend seeing it when you are in D.C. to get a sense of the loss and sadness felt by so many families from this war. ![]() Seattle, Washington, United States ![]() Added Nov 4, 2008 This is my favorite thing to do when I am in Seattle. There is so much energy here and the food is amazing. If you are sticking around in Seattle for a few days you can buy bouquets of the most amazing flowers to enjoy! Watch the fish mongers sling fish at customers and just enjoy! ![]() San Francisco, California, United States ![]() Added Nov 4, 2008 I spent all day wandering the streets of China town. It is a hive of activity and the food is outstanding. Eating a steamed pork bun and walking the streets was so fun! ![]() Washington, District of Columbia, United States ![]() Added Nov 4, 2008 A really well put together museum. It is hard to visit, but really important. ![]() Estes Park, Colorado, United States ![]() Added Nov 4, 2008 I love Rocky Mt. Me used to come out here as kids and camp. It is an easily accessible park (not far from Denver) and there is so much to see and do. Really a beautiful place. ![]() Kaikoura, South Island, New Zealand ![]() Added Nov 4, 2008 I really liked this place. We stayed here when my parents were in town visiting and they were great to us. The building is a cool old convent and they have a resident sheep! They had afternoon tea by they fire and one of the owners lived in Bhutan for years and was fascinating to talk to! ![]() Rotorua, North Island, New Zealand ![]() Added Nov 4, 2008 We rafted the Kaituna with this group and they did a great job. We had some pretty nervous rafters in our group and they handled it well. The waterfall on the Kaituna is the largest comercially rafted waterfall in the waterfall in the world and it was thrilling. But, the trip was pretty short (about 45 mins) which is a little disappointing. ![]() Denver, Colorado, United States ![]() Added Nov 4, 2008 As far as city aquariums (not near the ocean) go this is a pretty good one. If you have kids it is a great activity. Besides all of the aquatic species, they also have tigers, which is sort of interesting. Great for a rainy day! ![]() Denver, Colorado, United States ![]() Added Nov 4, 2008 This is a decent park, but don't head out here at night. It can be a little sketchy. ![]() Denver, Colorado, United States ![]() Added Nov 4, 2008 A good place to grab lunch and watch the world go by. This was a great place to be during the Democratic convention. Best people watching I had seen in a while! ![]() Denver, Colorado, United States ![]() Added Nov 4, 2008 I really like the Denver zoo. There is a lot to see and they really have their stuff together when it comes to education and conservation. ![]() Denver, Colorado, United States ![]() Added Nov 4, 2008 A little bit gritty, but a fun hangout! This bar has live music, especially on the weekends. They have a game room with multiple pool tables and shuffleboard, pinball, etc. Also, if you are upstairs you don't hear the music, which is sort of nice (you can take a break from it if you want). Non-smoking indoors, like all of Denver. ![]() Blenheim, South Island, New Zealand ![]() Added Oct 31, 2008 Beeeee-u-tiful!!! I highly recommend spending some time here. ![]() Rotorua, North Island, New Zealand ![]() Added Oct 31, 2008 My favorite of the thermal areas surrounding Rotorua/Taupo. The colors are amazing and there are several paths to take for views of all the different pools. We took a lot of guests here and they all enjoyed it. ![]() Rotorua, North Island, New Zealand ![]() Added Oct 31, 2008 Don't expect big excitement, but very pleasant. the trout are pretty impressive and you can see baby kiwi here, which is pretty cool. But, very mellow. ![]() Waitomo Caves, North Island, New Zealand ![]() Added Oct 31, 2008 This was so stinking fun!! The wet suits are not very warm, so I suggest wearing a layer of thermal underwear underneath. But, other than that it was a rocking good time!! ![]() Hamilton, North Island, New Zealand ![]() Added Oct 31, 2008 I really enjoyed the afternoon I spent at these gardens. The themed gardens are well done and the roses magnificent. ![]() Taupo, North Island, New Zealand ![]() Added Oct 31, 2008 Beautiful views from Taupo to the mountains. Taupo is a fun little town with lots of good restaurants and tons of places to stay. ![]() Eger, Northern Hungary, Hungary ![]() Added Oct 31, 2008 We had such a pleasant time here. The wine was fine and the atmosphere was fun. Push a coin into the walls of the local wineries and legend says you will be back. i hope it is true! ![]() Budapest, Central Hungary, Hungary ![]() Added Oct 31, 2008 We enjoyed hanging out in the warm pools, just relaxing. A good cultural experience too. ![]() Maui, Maui, United States ![]() Added Oct 31, 2008 Beautiful doesn't begin to describe this drive. Pull off and have a swim in the waterfalls along the way or buy fresh tropical flowers on the honor system all along the roadside. Take the whole day, bring sandwiches and just enjoy the sunshine. ![]() Chicago, Illinois, United States ![]() Added Oct 31, 2008 If shopping is your game, Michigan Ave is your place! Anything you think you might want to buy and more. ![]() Washington, District of Columbia, United States ![]() Added Oct 31, 2008 Always fascinating. There is some of the world's great people watching on the Mall. ![]() Gatlinburg, Tennessee, United States ![]() Added Oct 31, 2008 A nice park, not one of my favorites in the U.S. but still pretty. Though if you go to any of the easily accessible trails it can be like a superhighway of people. ![]() Tay Ninh, South-East Vietnam, Vietnam ![]() Added Oct 31, 2008 It is easy to combine a trip here with one to Cu Chi tunnels all in one day. I recommend skipping this and just going to Cu Chi. The temple is interesting, but it requires a ton of extra time on the crowded bus and there were other places I would have enjoyed doing more with my day. ![]() Ha Noi, North Vietnam, Vietnam ![]() Added Oct 31, 2008 Ahhh, perhaps you will see the turtle. We didn't but it was still pretty interesting. But, it was hot hot hot and pretty crowded and we were there in the morning. Maybe try later in the day? ![]() Bac Ha, Vietnam ![]() Added Oct 31, 2008 Really really cool. It was a rainy, muddy day when we were there and it made it all the better as everyone crowded into the food area and drank lots of rice wine! And the womens clothing is absolutely stunning. ![]() Hue, Central Vietnam, Vietnam ![]() Added Oct 31, 2008 I agree that a good would be really useful here. On our own it was interesting, but not very informative. ![]() Ho Chi Minh City, South-East Vietnam, Vietnam ![]() Added Oct 31, 2008 Fascinating. Crazy to think how people lived and functioned here. ![]() Pashupatinath, Nepal ![]() Added Oct 31, 2008 Hard to rate this experience. The temples are beautiful and it was so fascinating to watch the funeral rituals at the ghats, but also hard to watch the families' grief as we were there as tourists. ![]() Kathmandu, Nepal ![]() Added Oct 31, 2008 Quintessentially Kathmandu. This temple is one of the unofficial symbols of the city and its image can be seen all sorts of places. The image will stay with you long after you leave. ![]() Kathmandu, Nepal ![]() Added Oct 31, 2008 Great way to immerse yourself in local life. Check out the spices, especially the many hues of Himalayan salt (pink, gray, purple). What a great way to spend a day, getting lost in the market and spending the afternoon finding your way back. Plus it beats spending all your time in Thamel! ![]() Kathmandu, Nepal ![]() Added Oct 31, 2008 The views can be superior to doing an Everest base camp trek. The path can be rough going. The guesthouses are plentiful, if sometimes really basic. The sense of adventure was able to get me up some of those Nepali "hills". I loved it. ![]() Dharmsala, Himalayan North, India ![]() Added Oct 31, 2008 I absolutely loved visiting the Norbulingka Institute. It was really neat to see some of the traditional Tibetan arts being preserved. I had never seen anyone paint a thangka before, nor did I realize how long it takes to learn the skills required to do it. The cafe is lovely and the grounds are so calm. Also, you can purchase the crafts/art work created on-site at the gift shop. Higher prices than in town for sure, but well worth it when you know where the money is headed. ![]() Bhutan ![]() Added Oct 31, 2008 I have never never had a landing on a flight as the one I took into Paro. The plane looked like it was going to hit the mountains as we banked and turned and swirled our way down. A small town with some really interesting sites in the neighborhood. Very chill. ![]() Punakha, Western Bhutan, Bhutan ![]() Added Oct 31, 2008 If it is clear out the views are out of this world! Stop and have a look at the stupas and the amazing mountains. ![]() Paro, Western Bhutan, Bhutan ![]() Added Oct 31, 2008 I enjoyed seeing the really old thangkas and other art. They also have a really interesting collection of old stamps from Bhutan. They have had some really cool ones, like a whole series of yeti! ![]() Erie, Pennsylvania, United States ![]() Added Oct 31, 2008 A great place to hang out in the summer. There are some nice little towns as well as amusement parks like cedar point and sea world! ![]() Maui, Maui, United States ![]() Added Oct 30, 2008 Paradise, at a cost of course, but paradise. Try staying off the beaten path, in Paia or Wailuku to save some money. I love this island for its laid back vibe and tropical beauty. A world unto itself. ![]() Cirali, Mediterranean Region, Turkey ![]() Added Oct 30, 2008 We had so so much fun here. They stowed our passports away in their safe and we had nothing to do but enjoy ourselves. We walked through the orange groves and ruins to a deserted beach, where a boat pulled up and tried to whisk away our friend for the price of a nice bottle of wine, we ate tons (never never have an eating contest with a kiwi!) and we visited the eternal flame. All while staying in a lovely little tree bungalow. Really great memories from a really great trip. ![]() Teton Village, Wyoming, United States ![]() Added Oct 30, 2008 Ragged peaks and fantastic vistas. I love the Tetons because they are not very refined! ![]() Moab, Utah, United States ![]() Added Oct 30, 2008 Awesome park!! The geology is fantastic and there are so so many of the beaten path places to hike you can spend an entire day without seeing other people. ![]() New York, New York, United States ![]() Added Oct 30, 2008 I love this museum. It reminds me of my childhood and still has those cool diorama displays many places are lacking these days. Really informative and a heck of a lot of fun to spend time in (if you are a science geek like me)! ![]() Maui, Maui, United States ![]() Added Oct 30, 2008 A great place for snorkeling (and I imagine diving). There are tons of fish and the area is protected. This is a very popular spot, be prepared! ![]() Niagara Falls, New York, United States ![]() Added Oct 30, 2008 Really fun, really wet experience! This is really the only way to get up close and personal with the falls! ![]() Manitou Springs, Colorado, United States ![]() Added Oct 30, 2008 Beautiful rock outcrops, but you really need to hike a ways to escape the crowds (at least in the summer). I would recommend checking it out, but maybe go early in the day? ![]() Maui, Maui, United States ![]() Added Oct 30, 2008 For the non-touristy experience go up for sunrise and then hike down the Sliding Sands trail and across the floor of the crater, taking in the moon-like surroundings and the silver-sword plants. With a permit you can camp in the crater and hike out at sea level the following day. You will never ever see stars like you do in that crater! ![]() New York, New York, United States ![]() Added Oct 30, 2008 Probably the best toy store in the world. This place is a blast, with or without kids. ![]() Las Vegas, Nevada, United States ![]() Added Oct 30, 2008 I think it is a uniquely American experience to go to Vegas. But, having said that it is so so weird that there is this giant city complete with water displays and a million lights in the middle of the desert. However, for sheer hedonistic pleasures Vegas is your place. ![]() Brasov, Transylvania, Romania ![]() Added Oct 30, 2008 We spent one Halloween here and it was perfect. Not only were there no tourists, who wouldn't love to spend Halloween at Dracula's castle? Followed by a screening of "Dracula, dead and loving it" in town. Hilarious. ![]() Lima, Lima & Surrounding Region, Peru ![]() Added Oct 30, 2008 I really liked this park. It was just down the street from where we stayed in Miraflores and it seems well used by the locals. Lots of people were out walking their dogs and doing yoga! The views down to the beach below are really good and the statue is quit entertaining for photo-ops!! ![]() Pisac, Southern Coast, Peru ![]() Added Oct 30, 2008 These ruins were really cool. Not far from Cusco, but enough of a haul to keep the masses away, except on the weekends when people come in for the crafts market in Pisac the town. You can also see the remains of burial chambers in the walls of the canyon surrounding the old city. Zbigniew M. commented... Added Oct 30, 2008 I find myself strangely attracted to your brain. ![]() Lima, Lima & Surrounding Region, Peru ![]() Added Oct 30, 2008 This is a good central area to start exploring Lima. It was an easy walk and if the weather is nice it is fun. ![]() Rotorua, North Island, New Zealand ![]() Added Oct 30, 2008 One of the more expensive places to see the thermal areas, but the cultural stuff does make it worthwhile. ![]() Waitangi, North Island, New Zealand ![]() Added Oct 30, 2008 Worth seeing for the historical aspects, but not really that exciting. I did enjoy seeing the traditional Maori dance show at the visitors center. ![]() National Park, North Island, New Zealand ![]() Added Oct 30, 2008 Well worth the effort, but be sure to bring lots of layers of clothing and rain gear as the weather changes quickly! Great views!! You can complete it all in one day or stay over part way. ![]() Rotorua, North Island, New Zealand ![]() Added Oct 30, 2008 A really fun way to spend the afternoon. We loved racing down on the luge and then catching the lift back up for a little snack overlooking Rotorua and the lake! ![]() Auckland, North Island, New Zealand ![]() Added Oct 30, 2008 We lived in this town for a year and it was a fantastic place. Don't let people scare you away saying it smells. There are a few thermal areas that stink, but the town generally doesn't. There are tons of hotsprings around and where else can you be mountain-biking in the woods and come across boiling mud? ![]() Tongariro, North Island, New Zealand ![]() Added Oct 30, 2008 If you can spare the time and are there in the right season (not too much snow) the Tongariro crossing is amazing. The winds can be really high and the temps vary a lot throughout the day so be sure to pack plenty of layers! ![]() Queenstown, South Island, New Zealand ![]() Added Oct 30, 2008 Beautiful lake and it is so so nice to drive around it and check out all the little outposts, like Glenorchy and Paradise. ![]() San Diego, California, United States ![]() Added Oct 29, 2008 This is an amazing zoo! Especially great when it is so humid in D.C. that you need to escape to the air-conditioning!! ![]() Keystone, South Dakota, United States ![]() Added Oct 29, 2008 Impressive, yes. It is well worth a visit if you can get there! ![]() Grand Canyon, Arizona, United States ![]() Added Oct 29, 2008 One of nature's most fascinating wonders. We stayed over night just on the edge of the canyon and there was no one around, it was magic. ![]() Mbabane, Hhohho (North Swaziland), Swaziland ![]() Added Oct 29, 2008 A fascinating mix of crafts and traditional medicines. You can pick up beautiful cloth and have clothing made from it. Really interesting. ![]() Monte Verde, Pacific Coast, Costa Rica ![]() Added Oct 28, 2008 What a cool place. The flora and fauna found here will amaze you. ![]() Hacienda Monteverde, Northwestern Costa Rica, Costa Rica ![]() Added Oct 28, 2008 There is nothing like ziplining through the trees as tropical birds fly out in front of you! I agree, get there early and you can miss the crowds! ![]() Arenal, Northwestern Costa Rica, Costa Rica ![]() Added Oct 28, 2008 It is really cool to walk near the base of an active volcano. But, still a cool area and you can hit the hotsprings while you are there! ![]() Jin'an, Sichuan Province, China ![]() Added Oct 28, 2008 I loved this town! We did a horsetrek and spent a day before and a day after there. Be sure to walk into the old part of town. But Xian can be really really hot!! ![]() Dali, Yunnan Province, China ![]() Added Oct 28, 2008 We spent a few rainy days in Dali. We spent a lot of time doing that and watching pirated DVDs while it rained! ![]() Punakha, Western Bhutan, Bhutan ![]() Added Oct 28, 2008 A short walk in to this temple through the rice fields is well worth it. Sort of disappointing. ![]() Bangkok, Central Thailand, Thailand ![]() Added Oct 28, 2008 The absolute best place to buy souvenirs in Thailand. I love this market. A friend who lives in Bangkok furnished her apartment at this market and it looked fantastic! ![]() Beijing, Beijing Province, China ![]() Added Oct 28, 2008 Well worth a visit, especially if you can get to one of the further out (from Beijing) sections. We were actually able to get away from the crowds and enjoy the views on our own. and it was quite a feeling to actually be on THE great wall! ![]() Bangkok, Central Thailand, Thailand ![]() Added Oct 28, 2008 Fascinating and well worth one visit. The emerald Buddha as far as I can discern is made of jade, but is still quite beautiful and worth seeing. ![]() Istanbul, Marmara Region, Turkey ![]() Added Oct 28, 2008 Fascinating and mind numbing. You can wander for hours and still feel there is so much to see. I loved walking through this market with no purpose or time schedule. ![]() Beijing, Beijing Province, China ![]() Added Oct 28, 2008 I would give this 5 stars just for the amazing sense of history and grandeur that surrounds it, but the crowds are a bit overwhelming!! Get there early and head towards the far reaching areas if you can! ![]() Bangkok, Central Thailand, Thailand ![]() Added Oct 28, 2008 We did a night bike trip in Bangkok and ended up at a number of the temples. this one was quite spectacular at night and lovely during the day too! ![]() Selcuk, Aegean Region, Turkey ![]() Added Oct 28, 2008 A great place to see the ruins, outside of Greece. I found this area to be fascinating. And pretty well preserved too! ![]() Belmopan, Cayo, Belize ![]() Added Oct 28, 2008 We spent our honeymoon here and it was a perfect place to be! We did some snorkeling, some bike riding and some just hanging out at the local bars drinking pineapple rum and watching the world go by. Perfection. ![]() Rio de Janeiro, Southeastern Brazil, Brazil ![]() Added Oct 28, 2008 Who wouldn't want to go to see the beach where the famous song girl from Ipanema was written. You can actualyl go to the bar where they wrote the song and knock back a few local brews! ![]() Denver, Colorado, United States ![]() Added Oct 28, 2008 Best Vietnamese restaurant I know of in the Denver area. Their food is excellent and it is always a packed house. the ambience is only ok, but the food is more than worth it! ![]() Denver, Colorado, United States ![]() Added Oct 26, 2008 High quality entertainment!! Where else can you eat and watch a cliff diving show? Roving mariachi band, check. Cowboy shoot-out? check. Food, mediocre. Entertainment? well, priceless. ![]() New York, New York, United States ![]() Added Oct 25, 2008 Going to see the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island is a must for any New York visitor. It is such an impressive place and what a treat to take the ferry out and see it get closer and closer as you approach. Fantastic. And so much history. ![]() New York, New York, United States ![]() Added Oct 24, 2008 An oasis in the middle of the city. Lots of little nooks and crannies to explore. ![]() Figueras, Catalonia Region, Spain ![]() Added Oct 24, 2008 This museum is well worth a trip from Barcelona. You can take the train out. The museum was super fun filled with some of Dali's most famous works. Funky, just like Dali. ![]() Barcelona, Catalonia Region, Spain ![]() Added Oct 24, 2008 not the best beach for playing in the surf, but surrounded by fun restaurants and markets. I enjoyed it. ![]() Barcelona, Catalonia Region, Spain ![]() Added Oct 24, 2008 great city views and a funky cool place to hang out in the afternoon! I really enjoyed this park and buses run up there so it is easy to get to. ![]() Sydney, New South Wales, Australia ![]() Added Oct 24, 2008 Really a cool building. And check out the bar outside of it (sort of down below) it has great views, live music and fun people! ![]() Muang Pek, Northern Laos, Laos ![]() Added Oct 24, 2008 This area of Laos still felt like the wild west when I was there. We had to take a plane because there were still bandits on the roads (or so we were told), the brakes on the plane barely worked. But, there were few tourists and the area is fascinating. The jars are in areas filled with unexploded cluster bombs so stay on trail! ![]() Phnom Penh, Cambodia ![]() Added Oct 24, 2008 This museum is extremely powerful. Be prepared that it will be one of the hardest places you have ever visited. The hardest part for me was the pictures of all the prisoners. ![]() Siemreab, Cambodia ![]() Added Oct 24, 2008 I love these ruins. Sunrise at the main temple is unreal. And if you get to some of the further out ruins they are virtually abandoned. Go early or stay late to get the most solitude. ![]() New Zealand, South Island, New Zealand ![]() Added Oct 24, 2008 Fun, touristy town. Great place to use as home base if you are skiing, jetboating, wine tasting, bungee jumping, sky-diving or just about any other adrenaline sport you can think of! ![]() Taupo, North Island, New Zealand ![]() Added Oct 24, 2008 SHHH...it is secret....most locals will tell you where to go, but only reluctantly... ![]() Hamilton, North Island, New Zealand ![]() Added Oct 24, 2008 Not too much happening here. But they do have a great botanical gardens! ![]() Whitianga, North Island, New Zealand ![]() Added Oct 24, 2008 I like this area, but if you really want to get away from the pack go further out on the peninsula. You will hardly run into any tourists. ![]() Pahia, South Island, New Zealand ![]() Added Oct 24, 2008 Fun place to visit. Probably the most tropical climate in NZ. Beautiful place to do a boat trip. Lots of dolphins here. ![]() Nelson, South Island, New Zealand ![]() Added Oct 24, 2008 Absolutely fantastic place. Completely serviced by water taxis. You can kayak in, camp over night and walk out or catch a water taxi out. Go during the shoulder seasons (fall/spring) and you wont have crowds! ![]() Tauranga, North Island, New Zealand ![]() Added Oct 24, 2008 Gorgeous beach, 45 minutes from Rotorua. Gets pretty crowded during the holidays. Be sure to climb to the top of the mount. ![]() Blenheim, South Island, New Zealand ![]() Added Oct 24, 2008 Nice town, considered the sunniest in NZ (they fight with Nelson for this title). The wine tasting is divine. Get on a tour or rent a bike so you can taste to your hearts content. ![]() Coromandel, North Island, New Zealand ![]() Added Oct 24, 2008 Go early or go late and you will get to enjoy this spot on your own. The walk from town is fantastic lots of cool little bays and interesting sea life. ![]() Queenstown, South Island, New Zealand ![]() Added Oct 24, 2008 Fantastic place. So beautiful! We spent the night in the sound on a small boat with just 5 other people and it was magical. Be prepared for rain, but lots of rain means lots of waterfalls! ![]() Kathmandu, Nepal ![]() Added Oct 24, 2008 A necessary evil. Good place to have a western food fix and stock up for treks. ![]() Kathmandu, Nepal ![]() Added Oct 24, 2008 I love Bhaktapur. If you can stay here it is a treat to walk the streets at night (there was a traditional dance festival here when we were staying) and the bells ringing in the morning is really cool. Great architecture. ![]() Kathmandu, Nepal ![]() Added Oct 24, 2008 Beware the monkeys! Do not look them in the eyes or feed them because they are known to get aggressive. I have heard of and met more than one person who got bitten here and had to spend the rest of their time in Nepal hanging out in Kathmandu getting rabies shots! ![]() Cleveland, Ohio, United States ![]() Added Oct 24, 2008 Really fun activity if you are visiting Cleveland. I liked the section on one-hit wonders! ![]() Darjiling, Eastern India, India ![]() Added Oct 24, 2008 A slow ride, but great views and you can just ride a portion of the route to get a feel for it! ![]() Ghum, Eastern India, India ![]() Added Oct 24, 2008 Well worth a visit after watching sunrise on Tiger Hill. And then you can catch the toy train back to Darjeeling! ![]() Amritsar, North-Central Plains, India ![]() Added Oct 24, 2008 I loved visiting the Golden Temple. It is such an interesting place. You have to cover your head to get in (men and women) in keeping with the Sikh traditions, but if you haven't brought a scarf you can get on outside the gates. Be sure to have a meal while you are there. The food is good and it is amazing to watch them serve that many people! ![]() Salvador, Northeastern Brazil, Brazil ![]() Added Oct 24, 2008 The rhythm of life in Bahia is so wonderful. Mellow with an undertone of drums. And the architecture is fantastic. Crumbling colonial areas with a huge African influence. ![]() Salvador, Northeastern Brazil, Brazil ![]() Added Oct 24, 2008 Really fascinating church. I love the various body parts offered up for blessings. In a really cool area and you can get one of the string bracelets that will grant your wish if you wear it until it falls off! ![]() Barreirinhas, Northeastern Brazil, Brazil ![]() Added Oct 24, 2008 A really charming town, just outside the Chapada Diamantina national park. One of my favorite spots in Brasil. ![]() Foz do Iguacu, Southern Brazil, Brazil ![]() Added Oct 24, 2008 Really really impressive water falls. I like both sides, Brasil's side has the panoramic views, Argentina has the up-close and personal experience! ![]() Porto Seguro, Northeastern Brazil, Brazil ![]() Added Oct 24, 2008 Awesome awesome place to spend Carnaval!! I loved it. Smaller versions of some of the bigger cities parties, but still really hopping! ![]() Rio de Janeiro, Southeastern Brazil, Brazil ![]() Added Oct 24, 2008 Beautiful area, great for people watching. ![]() Rio de Janeiro, Southeastern Brazil, Brazil ![]() Added Oct 24, 2008 An amazing statue. Scary with no pupils in his eyes, but really cool. Great views from here and a neat trip to the top! ![]() Rio de Janeiro, Southeastern Brazil, Brazil ![]() Added Oct 24, 2008 Great views of the city, well worth the trip!! ![]() Machupicchu, Cusco Region, Peru ![]() Added Oct 24, 2008 I really loved these ruins. Try to do one of the alternative Inca trails if you can. We did not see any other tourists the whole 5 days we were hiking. And we got to see lots of smaller ruins all on our own! ![]() Barcelona, Catalonia Region, Spain ![]() Added Oct 24, 2008 Great place to stay in Barcelona, easily accessible to most attractions/transport. However, watch our bags! A girl got robbed sitting in the restaurant of our hostel and I heard of lots of people getting pick-pocketed. Though I had no trouble. ![]() Ha Long, North Vietnam, Vietnam ![]() Added Oct 24, 2008 The bay is really pretty, however it is starting to be overwhelmed with trash. Also, they require all the tour boats to park in the same area at night...I would NOT go swimming there!! The men on our boat told us there is more poo than fish in the water, as all the toilets drain into the bay. However a kayaking trip which goes a little out of the normal tourist range is well worth effort. ![]() United States ![]() Added Oct 24, 2008 We visited the bar and restaurant here on numerous occasions during our stay at the Taos Inn. They have yummy margaritas, live music a lot of nights and good southwestern fare. And in the summer the patio is great, facing out on to the main street of Taos. ![]() Taos, New Mexico, United States ![]() Added Oct 24, 2008 I loved this inn. It was so charming with fireplaces in the room and a lovely courtyard. The inn has been around since 1936 and is right in the middle of downtown Taos. Try to get a room in one of the outer buildings, it is a lot quieter. ![]() United States ![]() Added Oct 24, 2008 This is a fun place if you are in the mood for a good cocktail or a glass of wine. Prices are a bit high, but the atmosphere is really fun. I like to think of this place as fancy camping, the lights are all electric lanterns, there are birch trees and the shelves of the bar are held up with old chainsaws. They do have great happy hour specials on their specialty drinks. And the tapas are really delicious. ![]() Kathmandu, Nepal ![]() Added Oct 24, 2008 This place is worth it for the entertainment value. The food was alright, but the atmosphere is priceless. Lots and lots of groups come here after expeditions (little or big) to write their names and stats on bigfoot's foot cutouts and hang them on the wall. There are some big name climbers and there are lots of people who just want to celebrate their hiking/trekking triumphs! ![]() Kathmandu, Nepal ![]() Added Oct 24, 2008 When we came back to Kathmandu after a few weeks out in the country it was so nice to have a pizza! This place is always packed and the food is good. Also, my friends who lived in Kathmandu for several years swear it is one of the few safe places to eat salad, if you have a need for greens! ![]() Dublin, Ohio, United States ![]() Added Oct 24, 2008 Yummy Thai food in Columbus, Ohio? Yep, it is possible. Great soups and delicious Panang curry. This strip-mall find is worth seeking out if you find yourself in the area. They also do a 10% discount on carry-out. ![]() United States ![]() Added Oct 24, 2008 This restaurant is in the Highlands area of Denver. The food (both times I have been there) has been really good. Fresh ingredients and delicious combinations! I had a salad that had goat cheese, feta, almonds and apricots. It was delicious! Great soups and sandwiches. A great lunch spot. No reservations accepted. The staff was also extremely friendly. ![]() Saint Augustine, Florida, United States ![]() Added Oct 23, 2008 Great entertainment, especially on a rainy afternoon! This museum has a lot of the original items that Ripley collected around the world. I didn't think I was going to enjoy it that much, but it was really entertaining. Lots of stranger than fiction items. I like to think about the fact that no one had ever seen such things during his time! It would have been shocking! I recommend having a look. ![]() Denver, Colorado, United States ![]() Added Oct 23, 2008 A bit crusty around the edges, but a great local dive bar. The shuffleboard table is in high demand and you can usually hook up with more people to play with. A fun, busy place to spend the evening. ![]() Paia, Maui, United States ![]() Added Oct 23, 2008 This place is always hopping. The coffee is roasted on the premises and is delightful. I haven't had their lunches, but breakfast is good. Right in Paia, on the Hana highway. ![]() Lima, Lima & Surrounding Region, Peru ![]() Added Oct 23, 2008 Great people watching! Located in Miraflores right on the Plaza Kennedy this place seems to be a local institution. A great place to sip a coffee or a Pisco Sour and watch the locals go by. Great people watching! ![]() Lima, Lima & Surrounding Region, Peru ![]() Added Oct 23, 2008 This museum was interesting. It seems that a lot of the gold that used to be here was proven to be fakes. However, there are a few interesting artifacts still here and the weaponry exhibit in the upstairs level is fascinating. In fact, we spent way more time checking out the armor, swords and guns from around the world than in the smaller gold museum downstairs. I would recommend going, just for the experience, but don't expect too much from the gold end of things. ![]() Cusco, Cusco Region, Peru ![]() Added Oct 23, 2008 We had just returned from a long trek and had one last night in Cusco. This restaurant cam highly recommended and so we figured we would try it out. I had not yet had alpaca and wanted to try it. I am no alpaca expert, but theirs seemed perfectly prepared to me. It was absolutely delicious. We also sampled several S. American wines (I did a tasting flight so I tried 4 different wines for the cost of one glass). The wines were really delicious. I wish I had written down the names of the vineyards! Cozy atmosphere and delicious food, just perfect for a chilly Andean night. ![]() Denver, Colorado, United States ![]() Added Oct 23, 2008 Really good Indian food. I have been to India a few times, but there were still a few things on the menu I hadn't heard of. We tried a some new (to me) dishes and they were really well prepared, well spiced. This is a more expensive Indian restaurant, but not terribly so. The samosas were also yummy and there were lots of great dipping sauces for the papadam! ![]() Cusco, Cusco Region, Peru ![]() Added Oct 23, 2008 Excellent food. We ate here twice. Both times we sat in the courtyard near the wood-fire oven. We tried a couple of traditional Andean dishes and we even tried one of their wood-fire pizzas, which was yummy. Good atmosphere in the evening with candles. BE careful i they put you at a bench seat, I got dumped onto the floor and watched someone else do the same (they tend to go up on one side!!). Located right in San Blas. ![]() Johannesburg, Gauteng Province, South Africa ![]() Added Oct 23, 2008 This place is bad. I would not recommend it. IT was dirty, there were all sorts of odd people (one who latched onto us and we had to leave the city before we could get rid of her) and our room was not nice. It is an old mansion owned by a former gangster who got murdered in Jo'burg. Ugh. ![]() Belize ![]() Added Oct 22, 2008 We went to this restaurant on the last night of our honeymoon and it was a really special and unique experience. The food was fabulous, the drinks lovely and the setting divine. Right on the water, we took a water taxi from town to get there. They have a couple of bungalows they rent out also. It is definitely not an inexpensive restaurant, but if you are in the market for a really special meal this is it. ![]() Darjiling, Eastern India, India ![]() Added Oct 22, 2008 Sunrise at Tiger Hill is a must if you are in Darjeeling! IT is a real experience, filled with local tourists and chai vendors and views of the Himalaya. On a clear day you can catch glimpses of Mt. Everest and Kanchenjunga. ![]() Mangonui, North Island, New Zealand ![]() Added Oct 21, 2008 This is by far and away the best and freshest fish and chips I have ever had. You choose your fish right out of the case and they lightly batter and fry it up for you on the spot. I believe all fish is fresh that day. I dream of the fish from this place!!! ![]() Chamba, Himalayan North, India ![]() Added Oct 21, 2008 This hotel is located in the area of India they refer to as their "Switzerland". The hotel is ok, not great. The rooms were ok, though I got the feeling this was about the best hotel in town. We got there the night after an apparently rip-roaring party and the place was a little worse for the wear. The previous guests had smashed glasses on the steps and broken down doors. However, the hotel has the most unbelievable mt. views and the 2 story Hanuman sculpture behind the hotel is quite picturesque. The food in the restaurant was decent and they set up a Bollywood movie on the projector and ping-pong for us in the conference area. That was a real treat. Beware of the monkeys that hang out on the roof making noise all night long! The town of Khajjiar (if you can even call this tiny village a town!) is well worth a visit. You can ZORB in the center of the town, crazy to see lots of people rolling around in giant plastic balls amongst the packs of dogs and farm animals! ![]() Silverthorne, Colorado, United States ![]() Added Oct 21, 2008 This is a great ski area. It is really close to Denver and only about a half an hour from Breckenridge. A really good place to take the family. Lots of different terrain and great views over to Breck. It is generally not very crowded, except during holidays and is not nearly as exposed/cold as some of the other ski areas around. Lots of places just at the bottom of the mt. for apres ski drinks and snacks! ![]() Corvallis, Oregon, United States ![]() Added Oct 21, 2008 Very fresh local produce, great ambience and delightful cocktails and Oregon beers. This place is sublime. I tried a cobb salad (yummmmmm) and a portobella quesadilla, both excellent. The salad is huge, be forewarned! They do jazz brunches every second Saturday, which a friend says is fantastic. I would definitely eat here again if I went back to Corvallis. ![]() Peru ![]() Added Oct 21, 2008 What a pleasant place! I would go again in a heartbeat! We sat at the bar and enjoyed South American wines, Peruvian versions of traditional tapas (Peruvian trout, yum!) and watched them make the fresh pasta they serve in the restaurant. It was fantastic! And quite a romantic setting. They have a bakery on the first floor and the bar/restaurant are on the second floor. ![]() Peru ![]() Added Oct 21, 2008 We went to this restaurant on a recommendation. It was really difficult to find, tucked back into a street in the Miraflores area, even our cab driver had a hard time finding it. However, it was well worth the effort. There were no other tourists in the place and we were doted on by the staff. The wine was excellent and the food even better. A great place to have (one of their many versions of) ceviche. We really enjoyed this restaurant. ![]() Lima, Lima & Surrounding Region, Peru ![]() Added Oct 21, 2008 This hotel is well located in the Miraflores neighborhood of Lima. It is near Kennedy Square as well as Parque del Amore. The hotel staff was super friendly and our room was clean. There is interesting artwork on the walls, most of which is for sale. They have a free trade gift shop in the lobby and internet (though it was pretty slow). The breakfast was delicious and the place felt safe. I would stay here again. ![]() Costa Rica ![]() Added Oct 21, 2008 I took classes at the Monte Verde and the Flamingo Beach branches of CPI. The Monte Verde classes were really good. I learned a lot and the teacher was very competent. The Flamingo school seemed to be more aimed at people who wanted to spend time on the beach rather than learning Spanish. My teacher at Flamingo was not nearly as good as the one in Monte Verde. In general, I would say if you want to learn Spanish Costa Rica is not really the best place, as so many people speak English that you are not forced to use the Spanish. The School did, however, set up a ton of great activities, from zip-lining in the rainforest to a sunset cruise on the ocean. And they offer weekend excursions to some really cool places. ![]() Chengdu, Sichuan Province, China ![]() Added Oct 21, 2008 If you need a break from Chinese food when traveling China I would highly recommend this place. They offer American style food and actually do quite a good job with it! I loved the food in China, but after returning from a horse trek in the mountains this was a welcome treat. There is also a branch in Beijing. ![]() Queenstown, South Island, New Zealand ![]() Added Oct 21, 2008 This is one of the most bizarre places I have ever stayed. The whole place was built by hand by a Swiss man who had lived in NZ for years. From the stuffed bird (eagle maybe?) over our bed that looked like it was going to swoop down onto you to the moss growing (on purpose) in the bathroom. Unbelievably odd and fun at the same time. We stayed in the "Singing Frogs" room. It did have a nice sitting area, with fur covered chairs, where we were able to watch an old VHS tape and have a fire. Not far from Glenorchy or Queenstown and well worth paying a visit to! ![]() Denver, Colorado, United States ![]() Added Oct 21, 2008 If you like tequila and a little Mexican theme this is your place. Great drink specials, a fun and a little gritty crowd and decent food. We went one night and they were having a tequila tasting. Great mojitos! ![]() New Zealand ![]() Added Oct 21, 2008 We loved staying at this hotel. The bill it as a B and B, but besides the breakfast, I would classify it as a small hotel. The rooms were nice and we saw the most incredible sunrise just out the back of our room, where we had a little porch. They have a really fun Irish bar and restaurant that you can get to straight down the hall from the guest rooms (and it is also open to the public). They also have a great fireplace, which was so pleasant on a cold night! The music was fun and the bartender friendly. ![]() New Zealand ![]() Added Oct 21, 2008 High on entertainment value. We went and saw the sheep shearing show and it was really fun to see all of the different types of sheep. You also get to see how the dogs are used to round the sheep up. They have a kiwi farm and for the adrenaline junky there are all sorts of activities. Zorbing (rolling around in a giant wet or dry ball), bungy, etc. ![]() New Zealand ![]() Added Oct 21, 2008 This place is high on charm and the food is great. If you are a mountain biker you especially appreciate the atmosphere. I think the whole staff bikes. They have great sandwiches, bottle beer and delicious coffee (and chai!!). I highly recommend this place, though if you go right at lunch you are bound to encounter a line of locals waiting on their great food! ![]() New Zealand ![]() Added Oct 21, 2008 We loved this place and went there frequently. The owners are Belgians (I believe) and they have a taste for great European beers and blues music. The beer they have in stock depends largely on what they can get ahold of at the time, but it is always a good selection. Once a month they hold a blues jam and it is a blast! They get tons of musicians and anyone can sign up to play. If you are in town when that is going on make sure to go! The food is good, pub style grub with a European/NZ twist to it. Highly recommend this place. Sit at the bar, it is always interesting!! ![]() New Zealand ![]() Added Oct 21, 2008 The Pig as it is usually referred to in Rotorua has a good selection of really yummy (pub style) food and good beers. A great place to meet up with people on a night out (there isn't too much going on in downtown Rotorua past 9p.m.). They frequently host live music and have a great little dance floor. But, be warned after about 8p.m. they won't let you in if you are wearing flip-flops! Which is odd, considering Rotorua (NZ in general) is so laid back! ![]() New Zealand ![]() Added Oct 18, 2008 Amazingly beautiful location, fantastic wines (lots grown on the Gimblett gravels, an old river bed that keeps the vines warmer and creates a perfect growing environment), one of our favorite wineries in all of NZ. A special bonus is the excellent food at the attached restaurant Terroir. The chef is inventive and the menu features many NZ specialties such as lamb. ![]() Ho Chi Minh City, South-East Vietnam, Vietnam ![]() Added Oct 17, 2008 The best place in Ho Chi Minh city to enjoy a cold beer and watch the lights on the river. The bar is on the roof of the Majestic Hotel and you can see forever. A little bit of magic in the city. ![]() Cleveland, Ohio, United States ![]() Added Oct 15, 2008 If you are a vegetarian or just enjoy a meat-free meal this is a perfect place for breakfast, lunch or dinner! Though they do have some meat options the veggie selections far outnumber them on the menu! The food is inventive and creatively named and they have tons of wraps, sandwiches and salads. I have never had a bad meal here. ![]() Mexico ![]() Added Oct 14, 2008 I went to a wedding here a year ago and it was a gem. Not one of the typical all-inclusive resorts in the Riviera Maya. It is a bit older and though there is a restaurant there you are not obligated to eat in it (though I actually liked their food quite a bit and it is practically on the beach, so we ate there often). The beach is fantastic, quite beautiful. And when we snorkeled off the beach I saw 6 sea turtles in one afternoon. They have lots of room options, including condos. It was a perfect setting for a wedding! Near to Tulum and Xelha. ![]() West Yellowstone, Montana, United States ![]() Added Oct 12, 2008 The first and one of the best National Parks in the United States! The scenery is unbeatable and the wildlife viewing opportunities unparalleled. If you get a chance to visit Yellowstone I recommend either doing a back-country trip or going during the winter. Getting just a little off the beaten path will give you a chance to really experience Yellowstone's wilderness without all the crowds. And, during the winter the park is nearly empty and the wildlife is easily visible, we saw fox, bison, wolves, etc. There are opportunities for cross-country skiing and snow-shoeing. The geysers in the winter are also quite a treat. There is also the opportunity to visit some of the hot springs, while it is snowing out!! Try the Boiling River. Absolutely fantastic! Douglas B. commented... Added Oct 30, 2008 Just keep writing, just keep writing, I`ll keep reading. :) ![]() Wellington, North Island, New Zealand ![]() Added Oct 11, 2008 great museum and FREE to get in, you can't beat that!!! ![]() Wellington, North Island, New Zealand ![]() Added Oct 11, 2008 We ate breakfast here each time we were in Wellington and it was consistently delicious! Great coffee, great food and a nice atmosphere. ![]() Agra, North-Central Plains, India ![]() Added Oct 10, 2008 the Taj is as beautiful as they say, but Agra is hard to handle. My suggestion is to get in see the sites and leave as soon as possible. The rickshaw drivers actually got in a fist fight at the train station over who was going to take us. It was really hard to handle. And the city is really polluted and dirty with a big feral dog population. But, seeing the Taj Mahal at sunset was a once in a lifetime opportunity! So, for that reason I recommend going. Douglas B. commented... Added Oct 29, 2008 Just keep writing, just keep writing, I`ll keep reading. :) ![]() Grandview Heights, Ohio, United States ![]() Added Oct 9, 2008 Best coffee shop in Ohio! And the atmosphere in the Grandview branch is awesome. Great place to hang out on a Sunday afternoon. ![]() Siemreab, Cambodia ![]() Added Oct 9, 2008 A delightful place to stay in Siem Reap. A small hotel right in town. More expensive than a hostel, but not super expensive. And the saltwater pool is lovely after a day at the temples. The staff is friendly, the rooms clean and the restaurant good. ![]() Ha Noi, North Vietnam, Vietnam ![]() Added Oct 9, 2008 Handspan sets up biking, hiking, kayaking and boat trips. We did a 3 day bike trip through them in Northern Vietnam. Visited hill-tribe markets and mountain biked, it was amazing. We also did a kayak/boat trip in Ha Long Bay and it was also fantastic. They are professional and thought a little bit more expensive than some of the tour companies, but I think they are worth it! ![]() Paro, Western Bhutan, Bhutan ![]() Added Oct 9, 2008 This should be one of the wonders of the world.
