I grew up moving and traveling around the United States. My parents taught me to love the outdoors--going camping and hiking frequently. Some of my best memories are of our yearly camping trips to Yosemite and the Santa Cruz Mountains. I caught the serious travel bug after going on a culinary tour of Tuscany and Paris while in culinary school. The small Tuscan towns, vineyards and barrels of balsamic vinegar, Parmesan cheese factories, and rooms full of aging Prosciutto... oh, life was good! From that trip on I couldn't get enough and the addiction began... I love the sense of adventure that travel brings and I wouldn't be able to live without it. I love photography--preserving that perfect moment of exploration and discovery on film (or memory card...). I love food--tasting new flavors and ingredients. My main travel goals include circling Iceland by car, watching the sunrise from the top of Mt. Fuji, swimming the jelly lakes of Palau, trekking Machu Picchu, sailing in Halong Bay, hiking though Cambodia, and eating my way though Spain... the list continues to grow. I'm also extremely interested in volunteering abroad, if anyone knows of any good companies or ideas. Currently I'm trying to save up for an Antarctic Icebreaker cruise (via Buenos Aires, Iguasu Falls, and Tierra Del Fuego) before it all melts. Anyone have any great travel fund raising ideas? My student loans are crushing my dreams. Travel ScorecardCountries See cities Map Loading! Page 1 of 10 My Reviews![]() Victoria, British Columbia, Canada ![]() Added Aug 29, 2010 If coming from Victoria and you don't have a car, I highly suggest foregoing an expensive group tour and taking the city bus instead. Although it takes slightly longer to get there this way, you can stay at the garden as long as you want without any tour group time constraint and it considerably cheaper. The Victoria Visitors Center (at the heart of the Inner Harbour) has a map and full bus schedule for the route to the gardens. ![]() Victoria, British Columbia, Canada ![]() Added Aug 29, 2010 A beautiful picturesque city! The Inner Harbour is brought to life during the summer with local vendors and street performers lining the bay. It makes for a wonderful relaxing weekend trip, I took the Victoria Clipper from Seattle and highly recommend it. ![]() Seattle, Washington, United States ![]() Added Aug 29, 2010 The gum wall is awesome! Just don't think about the fact that's it's chewed gum. All the colors and textures on the old brick wall make for really interesting photography and a perfect Kodak moment! It's right down the stairs from Pike Place Market, hidden from the main tourist crowds yet extremely accessible when visiting the market. Don't forget to add your own little piece of art to the wall! ![]() Seattle, Washington, United States ![]() Added Mar 30, 2010 There isn't much to do here, except look at the view, but it's a beautiful must-see view of the Seattle skyline. ![]() Seattle, Washington, United States ![]() Added Mar 30, 2010 Amazing sandwiches! I like grabbing one to go (since there is hardly ever anywhere to sit inside) and walking down to the water front to eat. They're open very limited hours, so don't expect to just go by anytime you want. ![]() Seattle, Washington, United States ![]() Added Mar 6, 2010 It's free and it's beautiful. The wide open paths that wind down the hillside to the waterfront (past 20 unique sculptures) is a fun relaxing way to experience a piece of Seattle. My personal favorites are Alexander Calder's "Eagle" and Roy McMakin's "Love & Loss." ![]() Los Angeles, California, United States ![]() Added Jan 30, 2010 A great place to go with kids. The planetarium shows are a surprisingly affordable and fun and the new exhibits are entertaining (Step on different scales to find out how much you weight on each planet.) The best time to go for a view during the day is the day after a storm (which isn't very often), otherwise, you'll probably see more of the smog/haze than anything else. Regardless, it's still the best view of Los Angeles. Get there early to get parking, the lot is small. Otherwise, expect an uphill walk. ![]() Cannery Row, California, United States ![]() Added Jan 8, 2010 The best place to go to get your chocolate/ice cream fix after walking around the Aquarium or Cannery Row all day. The building sits right along the coast, so it has an outdoor deck with tables overlooking the ocean. It's definitely the most beautiful Ghirardelli. ![]() Seattle, Washington, United States ![]() Added Jan 8, 2010 With a completely laid-back atmosphere, this is the perfect place for a warm bowl of home-made chili with a side of jalapeno mac and cheese on a cold rainy day. It's a simple, affordable, and delicious menu. ![]() Seattle, Washington, United States ![]() Added Nov 11, 2009 There are three attraction here that make for a fun, relaxing, and free day trip: 1) Locks 2) Salmon ladder 3) Botanical gardens. I'm not really into boats, but watching 8 million gallons of water lift a boat up 15 feet from the salt water sound to a fresh water lake is a pretty interesting sight. Also, the best time to view large salmon going up the ladder is during July, August, and September. ![]() Long Beach, California, United States ![]() Added Nov 9, 2009 Not the largest aquarium I've ever been to, but it is worth a visit. The Shark Lagoon and Lorikeet Forest definitely set this aquarium apart from any other. The Shark Lagoon lets you touch zebra, bamboo, and epaulette sharks as they swim by you in large touch pools. In the Lorikeet Forest, you will be surrounded by beautiful tropical birds that are full of personality. Buy a cup of nectar and they will literally walk all over you as they eat. ![]() Snoqualmie Pass, Washington, United States ![]() Added Nov 9, 2009 The path to the observation deck to view the falls is directly off of the highway and extremely accessible for everyone. It's may be only 25 miles from downtown Seattle but you feel hundreds of miles away from the hectic city life. ![]() Seattle, Washington, United States ![]() Added Nov 9, 2009 A short and beautiful drive from Seattle, Remlinger Farms is a great place to get away from the city and stock up on fresh produce. It's a popular place during the weekends for families and during the week for school field trips. Come for the Fall Harvest festival from the end of September through October and explore the corn maze and pumpkin-patch. ![]() Monterey, California, United States ![]() Added Nov 5, 2009 Depending on the time of year, this park can be almost unbearably busy. The main park area is flat and grassy, making it a great place for a picnic (with an amazing view). The park also has a small beach popular with local divers. If the park is too busy, the surrounding area is equally breathtaking. Drive past it and park on the road further down. There is a great walking path that follows the cliffs with beach access to the beaches below. The beaches here are rocky, making for great tidepooling, some of the best I've ever encountered on the Monterey Bay. ![]() Santa Cruz, California, United States ![]() Added Nov 5, 2009 Make sure to walk to the end of the wharf, where you can watch the sea lions relaxing below you through large holes carved out of the boards. It's a nice relaxing stroll with good souvenir shopping and dining options. Also, great views of the Boardwalk and West Cliff. ![]() Santa Cruz, California, United States ![]() Added Nov 5, 2009 From the Boardwalk to Natural Bridges State Park, West Cliff is one of the most beautiful drives on the west coast. It's best enjoyed, however, outside of the car. Take a walk, watch the surfers and sea otters play. Take one of several stairs along the path down to the tide pools and touch sea stars and anemones. During the winter, watch the enormous waves crash into the cliffs--sometimes sending water and foam onto the road. ![]() Death Valley, California, United States ![]() Added Nov 5, 2009 Interesting formations that are actually more compelling in person than what pictures convey (dried mud). They are very delicate, so you can't walk around in them. Instead, you stand on the road or walkway and look from a distance. ![]() Las Vegas, Nevada, United States ![]() Added Nov 5, 2009 I've read many reviews where people think this place is a total rip off. I, however, thought it was one of the coolest ideas ever! EVERYTHING is ice. We ordered from a ice bar, sat on ice, and drank from an ice glass. While it does cost to get it, it's not rediculously expensive. I paid $25 which included one drink and coat rental. While they say your stay is limited to 30 minutes, we left when we wanted to and no one was timing us. If you want the deluxe experience it costs $80/person for a fur coat rental, hat (that you keep), two drinks, and free souvenir picture. Even if you just do it once, it's a pure Vegas experience. ![]() Las Vegas, Nevada, United States ![]() Added Nov 5, 2009 Fun Irish Pub inside of New York, New York. Great Irish food, drink, and entertainment. The bar is a Victorian-style dark wood masterpiece. You feel like you've been transported to Ireland. ![]() Lisboa, Lisbon & Surrounds Region, Portugal ![]() Added Nov 5, 2009 Great place to go when you first arrive in Lisbon. You can see all of Lisbon from here, which helps with getting a sense of direction. Beautiful views! ![]() San Francisco, California, United States ![]() Added Nov 5, 2009 Order the "Bagna Calda," a iron skillet full of roasted garlic and olive oil, served with fresh foccacia. Yummmm! ![]() Las Vegas, Nevada, United States ![]() Added Nov 4, 2009 It's a small but beautiful garden found right next to the hotel's lobby. It only takes a few minutes to walk through. Every season/holiday is celebrated with different flower displays and artwork. Since it constantly changes, if you visit Las Vegas often, it's a fun place to come and see the new designs. ![]() Las Vegas, Nevada, United States ![]() Added Nov 4, 2009 Something fun to do to get away from the noise and smoke of the casinos. There are so many M&M themed things to buy here that you might end up spending as much in this store as you do gambling. It's dangerous. Don't go in hungry, the wall of M&Ms are fun, but expensive. ![]() Las Vegas, Nevada, United States ![]() Added Nov 4, 2009 Amazingly beautiful and intricate pastries. It's also home to the World's Largest Chocolate Fountain that cascades down from the ceiling on small glass tiers. Even if you don't eat anything here (although it's difficult to resist), it's fun seeing the fountain. ![]() Saint Louis, Missouri, United States ![]() Added Nov 4, 2009 Amazing botanical garden. My favorite section is the Climatron, a huge glass dome housing a tropical paradise full of plants, birds, and waterfalls. There is also a beautiful Japanese garden with Koi fish feeding which is a lot of fun for kids. ![]() Saint Louis, Missouri, United States ![]() Added Nov 4, 2009 Not only is it tons of fun, but the best thing about it is that it's FREE! Some of the special exhibits and theaters cost extra ($3 - $8) but there are so many other things to do, you don't have to pay anything if you don't want to. This is definitely the best science center I have ever visited. ![]() Anaheim, California, United States ![]() Added Nov 2, 2009 Some people say this park is boring. Realize that it isn't "Disneyland" and you'll still have an amazing Disney experience. The whole park is themed around different California regions. Sip some wine next to a vineyard, watch Tortillas being made, eat some clam chowder next to the ocean, hike through redwoods, or walk around Hollywood. There aren't as many rides as Disneyland, but there is still definitely enough for a fun-filled day for people of all ages. ![]() Lisboa, Lisbon & Surrounds Region, Portugal ![]() Added Nov 2, 2009 Delicious creamy custard in a flaky crunchy shell. You can't have just one. Explore the bakery's maze of rooms, be surrounded by walls of azulejos, and catch a glimpse into the kitchen behind a wall of glass to watch pastries being made. ![]() Santa Barbara, California, United States ![]() Added Nov 2, 2009 Whether you buy anything or not, it's a fun place to stop on your way to or from Santa Barbara. Explore two large rooms full of every type of orchid you could imagine (mainly Cymbidium and Phalaenopsis varieties) and arranged in beautiful displays. It's like being in a botanical garden, but it's all for sale. ![]() Las Vegas, Nevada, United States ![]() Added Nov 2, 2009 Compared to the newer hotels on the strip, the Monte Carlo's basic rooms could use an upgrade and makeover. Regardless, it's still a beautiful resort. ![]() Las Vegas, Nevada, United States ![]() Added Nov 2, 2009 There are so many options when building your own burger, it can be overwhelming. The restaurant itself is a fun and relaxed environment with small TVs in every booth. The cheesecake or chocolate burgers are unique options for dessert, but even better than that is the HUGE milkshake menu and beer ice cream floats. ![]() United States ![]() Added Oct 29, 2009 The most beautiful national park in the U.S. While Yosemite Valley is the main attraction and most popular with tourists, the rest of the park is just a beautiful and spectacular. Try driving north to Tuolumne Meadows or south to Mariposa Grove. The best time of year to visit is in in late spring, when the snow is melted and roads are accessible, waterfalls are at full flow, the air is still clear, and the summer crowd hasn't yet hit. ![]() Vacherie, Louisiana, United States ![]() Added Oct 29, 2009 Fun day trip from New Orleans to experience a piece of Southern charm, culture, and history. The grounds are perfectly groomed, the oak trees are picture perfect. Don't just stop at this planation, the surrounding Great River Road is full of other plantations such as Laura, San Francisco, and Myrtles Plantations. None of which are quite as spectactular as Oak Alley, however, they offer different perspectives on life during the era. Rent a car and drive it yourself instead of taking a tour so you can visit as many as you like, for as long as you like. ![]() Cortez, Colorado, United States ![]() Added Oct 29, 2009 Taking a ranger-led tour down to the cliff dwellings is an absolute must. Walking through the 800+ year old ruins is an amazing experience for kids and grown-ups alike. ![]() Durango, Colorado, United States ![]() Added Oct 29, 2009 I'm not really into trains, but I would take this ride over and over. The ride is amazingly beautiful and there is so much to see! Silverton is such a cool quaint old west town to visit and the train is a great way to get there. ![]() Pagosa Springs, Colorado, United States ![]() Added Oct 29, 2009 You don't have to stay at this resort to use and relax in their hot spring mineral pools. Spending an afternoon/evening relaxing here is so much fun and great for families! You can walk on water as you pass through the large pool on a partially submerged foot bridge. There are 18+ different sized pools ranging anywhere from 83 to 114 degrees F. Some of the cooler pools are directly next to the San Juan river, mixing the cool fresh water with the hot mineral water and you can jump in the river whenever you want. Even if you're just driving through this town, you must stop here! ![]() Portland, Oregon, United States ![]() Added Oct 29, 2009 Stunning drive that makes for a perfect day escape from Portland. Don't just stop at the most popular Multnomah Falls, it's usually too crowded to enjoy it and there are so many other beautiful sights to see. ![]() Seattle, Washington, United States ![]() Added Oct 29, 2009 Really fun, fast, easy, and cheap outing. Since it's located under a bridge, you can even climb it on a rainy day. ![]() San Diego, California, United States ![]() Added Oct 29, 2009 Cool place to get a different view of San Diego that is off the beaten tourist trail. It can get really windy, so be prepared. ![]() San Diego, California, United States ![]() Added Oct 29, 2009 The best zoo I've ever visited. Not only is it home to a huge selection of animals, but it's also a huge botanical garden. My family likes going there just to look at the plants. ![]() San Diego, California, United States ![]() Added Oct 29, 2009 Little Italy makes for a quick day outing while in San Diego. Filippi's Pizza Grotto serves a delicious pizza. While waiting to be seated, its fun to walk around the small Italian market in the front. ![]() San Diego, California, United States ![]() Added Oct 29, 2009 A fun thing to do while in San Diego. Old Town feels like a piece of Mexico. There are tons of little shops selling Mexican odds and ends, plus lots of Mexican restaurants with great food! ![]() Coronado, California, United States ![]() Added Oct 29, 2009 Gorgeous hotel located on a beautiful beach. You don't have to stay there to enjoy it. If staying in San Diego, Coronado is a short drive away. Admire the hotel by walking its grounds and grab an ice cream at the hotel's ice cream shop to enjoy while looking out over the Pacific. A cheap and easy way to feel like you're staying there. ![]() Los Angeles, California, United States ![]() Added Oct 29, 2009 It's dirty and overly touristy. Once you look at Grauman's Chinese Theater, look at the Hollywood sign (what you can see of it through the pollution), and walk through the Hollywood & Highland shopping center, you're done. ![]() Santa Cruz, California, United States ![]() Added Oct 29, 2009 I love downtown Santa Cruz. It's full of unique shops, artwork, street performers, and you can people watch for hours on end. You never know what you'll see or hear, which is what makes it so much fun. Sure, there are homeless and runaways roaming around, but they usually don't bite. ![]() Lancaster, California, United States ![]() Added Oct 26, 2009 Lancaster isn't exactly the friendliest city for outdoor enthusiasts, but this park makes it a little more bearable for those of us who would rather walk through nature than a concrete jungle. The park nice flat and wide trials (making for easy walking or jogging) that wind through groves of Joshua trees. There are also bird watching walks and "moon walks" for star gazing with local guides. ![]() Seattle, Washington, United States ![]() Added Oct 26, 2009 Fun destination for a rainy Seattle day. Take one of their tours ($6/person) to learn all about the transformation from cacao fruit to chocolate bar. For over an hour, you'll hear about the history of chocolate, tour the factory, and taste an incredible amount of chocolate along the way. Even if you don't want to take the tour, the store is full of chocolate truffles and bars to stock up your pantry, plus plenty of free chocolate samples. ![]() Seattle, Washington, United States ![]() Added Oct 26, 2009 Three words: Chocolate, Martini, Bar. Since my ultimate chocolate fantasy of eating my way through Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory most likely won't ever come true, this is definately the next best thing. Not only is there a boundless supply of chocolate cakes and truffles but also 12+ chocolate martinis to choose from and a seemingly endless list of liqueur spiked milkshakes and espressos. Go for happy hour with $5 chocolate martinis and half-price appetizers. ![]() Seattle, Washington, United States ![]() Added Oct 26, 2009 Fun experience, yummy seafood. The Seafeasts are definately feasts. We ordered "The Westport" for two for three of us and we all left full. ![]() Leavenworth, Washington, United States ![]() Added Oct 25, 2009 I question this quality of any restaurant claiming to be the "best" of anything and this restaurant is no exception--claiming to be "The Best German Food in Washington State... Guaranteed." I've never eaten German food anywhere else in Washington State so I can't completely attest to the statement; however, the food was surprisingly good. Grab one of their handcrafted German beers with some Schnitzel, Rotkraut, and Spätzle. ![]() Springdale, Utah, United States ![]() Added Oct 14, 2009 Before I visited here I heard amazing things. Once I dined here, however, I walked away not understanding the hype. The dining areas, both inside and the outside patio, had a nice atmosphere. The inside walls being covered with local art and the outside having a relaxing garden feel. The food was good, but nothing amazing and a little overpriced. ![]() Springdale, Utah, United States ![]() Added Oct 14, 2009 Vivid red rocks under a bright blue sky. Absolutely gorgeous. Don't forget the east side of the park. It's less crowded and just a beautiful as the main canyon with it's wide open expanses of patterned sandstone. It's also where you may be able to see herds of bighorn sheep if you're lucky. ![]() Florence, Tuscany Region, Italy ![]() Added Oct 11, 2009 If you only have a short amount of time, don't worry about going in and admire the amazing architecture from the outside. It's absolutely awe-inspiring. ![]() Washington, District of Columbia, United States ![]() Added Oct 9, 2009 Maybe it's just because I love Teddy, but I love this park. If you want to get away from the urban world go to this island. This almost untouched island is serene and tranquil, with only foot traffic (not even bicycles are allowed). Take a walk through the woods and swamps to experience what this area of the country was like before it was paved over. The middle of the island has a memorial plaza dedicated to the past president, complete with fountains and a huge statue of the president. ![]() Arlington, Virginia, United States ![]() Added Oct 9, 2009 Amazing monument that towers above you. I never realized the size and magnitude of this monument until I visited. ![]() Washington, District of Columbia, United States ![]() Added Oct 9, 2009 Great place to go when visiting Washington D.C. Make an advanced tour reservation (they sell out fast) so you can walk through the building and see the beautiful rotunda area. ![]() Washington, District of Columbia, United States ![]() Added Oct 9, 2009 Beautiful place to stop and relax after a hard days work of walking up and down the National Mall. Even if you aren't into art, walking around this lush garden with interspersed sculptures can definitely be entertaining. ![]() Washington, District of Columbia, United States ![]() Added Oct 9, 2009 The most beautiful building in Washington D.C.. Taking one of its free public tours is a must. Whether you care about all of the books or records or not, the building is gorgeous! ![]() San Francisco, California, United States ![]() Added Oct 9, 2009 Touristy and definitely not the cheapest place to eat in San Francisco. However, if you don't have much time in this city, this is a great place to go for a taste of San Francisco. Great location right on the water with views of the bay, fun beach themed atmosphere, and really good crab! If you don't want to spend too much money, get a bowl of Crab Chowder. ![]() Seattle, Washington, United States ![]() Added Oct 7, 2009 Fun thing to do if you LOVE music, especially on those drizzly Seattle days. The admission price is a little steep for the museum's content, especially if you aren't a huge music fan. In that case, I would skip paying to go in and admire the building from the outside. ![]() Las Vegas, Nevada, United States ![]() Added Oct 7, 2009 A typical Vegas buffet with endless food options. There are 6+ food stations with Mexican, Asian, Middle Eastern, American, Italian, and Seafood. It was good, but not amazing. I've been to other buffets where the desserts looked better than they tasted. Desserts here, however, were definitely of higher quality and delicious. They even had cotton candy, which was fun. ![]() Las Vegas, Nevada, United States ![]() Added Oct 7, 2009 This place has a great location, with direct access from the Strip and an outdoor seating area, perfect for people watching. Their "Menehune Pork Sliders" are to die for. Have some with a fruity tropical drink of your choice and you will be transported to Hawaii. ![]() Paso Robles, California, United States ![]() Added Oct 7, 2009 The most fun winery in Paso Robles! It's decor has been described as "Moulin Rouge meets Edward Scissorhands," which I think is the perfect description. It costs to taste, but the whole experience is worth it atleast once. Before you begin tasting, try on a crazy hat or wig for the full experience. Don't worry too much about the wigs, I've been several times and everyone involved is still lice free. ![]() Anaheim, California, United States ![]() Added Oct 7, 2009 I think the best time to go to Disneyland is when the park is decorated for the holidays. It's my favorite place to get in the mood for Halloween and Christmas. The decorations are top rate (like everything done at Disneyland) and some of the characters are dressed up for the season. Yes, the park is more crowded the closer it gets to the specific holiday, but the park is decorated for over a month. Unless you have no other choice, never go the week between Christmas and New Years (it's beyond packed and almost reaches the point of not being fun). Go early in the season, it won't be as busy and it's a blast! ![]() New Orleans, Louisiana, United States ![]() Added Oct 5, 2009 Lounge and piano bar good for relaxing while taking a break from walking around the Quarter. It's especially a nice bar to go to if you want to avoid the touristy craziness of Bourbon Street. It definitely has more of a local Southern charm feeling. ![]() Siena, Tuscany Region, Italy ![]() Added Oct 5, 2009 In my opinion, the most beautiful duomo in Tuscany. While the outside itself is incredibly impressive, make sure you go inside. It took my breath away! ![]() Mammoth Lakes, California, United States ![]() Added Sep 30, 2009 Mammoth Mountain is just as much fun during the summer as in the winter. Instead of cross country skiing, go for a hike. Instead of downhill skiing, go mountain biking. During the summer, take the gondola up to the top of the mountain and eat lunch in their cafe. It's surprisingly good food with a beautiful view. ![]() Mammoth Lakes, California, United States ![]() Added Sep 30, 2009 The trail to Devil's Postpile is short and easy (0.8 miles roundtrip), perfect for a family hike. Once you reach the rock formation, remember to take the short detour to the top of the formation to see another side of the rock formations. Another fun trail in this park is to Rainbow Falls. It's a longer 5-mile trek and it goes through a large area of burnt out forest, so shade is rare. Definitely bring lots of water. The falls at the end of the hike, however, is beautiful. Take the trail down to the bottom of the falls and wade in the water for a cool break. ![]() Big Pine, California, United States ![]() Added Sep 30, 2009 The road to this forest is long, steep, and winding, but worth the drive. Because of the high elevation, there isn't much foliage and it's rather dry and rocky. The trees themselves are windblown and look dead. However, while it's definately not a rainforest, it's an ah inspring experience walking through a forest of 4,000 year old trees. ![]() Bishop, California, United States ![]() Added Sep 30, 2009 Located in Bishop Creek Canyon, about 22 miles west of ![]() Bass Lake, California, United States ![]() Added Sep 30, 2009 Good food in a fun/relaxed environment. Located right next to the lake, the casual outdoor patio provides views of the lake. Grab a beer and some fish & chips! ![]() New Orleans, Louisiana, United States ![]() Added Sep 30, 2009 New Orleans is a food paradise. Out of all the places in this wonderful city to visit and have a taste of creole food, I don't suggest trying this one. It felt like a tourist trap. Gumbo is all about its depth of flavor, I found this restaurant's gumbo to be one-note and boring. ![]() Cape Meares, Oregon, United States ![]() Added Sep 30, 2009 Pretty lighthouse and beautiful views of the Oregon Coast. Unless you're a lighthouse enthusiast, it's not the most exciting lighthouse ever. It's the shortest lighthouse on the Oregon coast, at only 38 feet high. Regardless, it is a beautiful location for a walk or picnic and a great place for bird and whale watching. ![]() San Francisco, California, United States ![]() Added Sep 30, 2009 Yes, the city, ocean, and seafood are all great in San Francisco, but I always have to go to Ghirardelli Square when in the city. It's busy and touristy, with lines going out the front door at times, but the sundaes and chocolate are so worth it! ![]() Los Angeles, California, United States ![]() Added Sep 28, 2009 If you're ever in LA you have to make a stop at this hole in a wall hot dog stand, just to say that you've been there. It's open late (until 3am on Fridays and Saturdays) and there is ALWAYS a line. The chili cheese hot dog is huge and incredibly greasy... but amazing. ![]() New Orleans, Louisiana, United States ![]() Added Sep 28, 2009 An open air market full of vendors with anything you could ask for--jazz cd's, jewelry, t-shirts, masks, beads, alligator heads, and art. This is the best comprehensive souvenir shopping in New Orleans. ![]() New Orleans, Louisiana, United States ![]() Added Sep 28, 2009 I had always avoided this restaurant because it was located right in the middle of the tourist route. After years of visiting New Orleans, I finally tried this restaurant during my last trip and I was pleasantly surprised. While the service wasn't perfect, the food was great. They had a darn good cup of gumbo! Don't get me wrong, it's not the best or most refined cajun/creole food ever, but it's worth a visit if you're looking for a casual and affordable New Orleans experience. ![]() New Orleans, Louisiana, United States ![]() Added Sep 28, 2009 I love this place! It's a tiny little bar, with a great location, relaxing outdoor seating, friendly bartenders, and cool pirate atmosphere. Forget Bourbon Street, this is the first place I stop when in New Orleans. The Absinthe Suisse will kick your butt, in a good way... ![]() New Orleans, Louisiana, United States ![]() Added Sep 28, 2009 A culinary trip to New Orleans just isn't complete with a meal at Commander's Palace. The jazz brunch with a Milk Punch, Turtle Soup, Pecan Crusted Gulf Fish and Creole Bread Pudding Souffle are little pieces of heaven. ![]() San Simeon, California, United States ![]() Added Sep 27, 2009 Free and easy access makes this a fun spot to stop when driving along PCH. There is a wide boardwalk along the top of the beach cliff, providing great views of the seals within a safe distance. Late winter and early spring are the best times to go because the seals are birthing and the population is at its highest. It's usually cold and VERY windy, so dress appropriately. ![]() Praia da Vitoria, Azores Region, Portugal ![]() Added Sep 26, 2009 Terceira Island is a small island, the whole thing can easily be seen in a day and this viewpoint is a necessary stop. It's possibly the most beautiful place I've ever seen. The road up to the viewpoint is disintegrating and narrow, but a fun journey. Once you arrive, it's literally breathtaking. Endless green pastures, outlined in black basalt fences and dotted with cows. ![]() Lisboa, Lisbon & Surrounds Region, Portugal ![]() Added Sep 26, 2009 Beautiful views of the entire city. The elevator itself is closed on Sundays, but no matter what day, it doesn't cost anything to take the spiral staircase to the top, except if you have a fear of heights. Definately a easy must-do stop when exploring Lisboa. ![]() Santa Barbara, California, United States ![]() Added Sep 26, 2009 A trip to Santa Barbara isn't complete without visiting the most beautiful park in the city. In the morning, the park is quiet and serene, making it a perfect spot for yoga and tai chi. Towards the afternoon, more families appear to play at the nearby Alameda Park and picnic next to the koi pond (which is also packed full of water lilies and turtles). It's also a great place for plant lovers. A beautiful botanical garden, most of the plants are drought-tolerant. Maps are provided through out the park's paths, labeling the many different specimens. Even though it's a small park, between walking the plant-ridden pathways, watching the koi and turtles, and relaxing in the sun, spending half a day here is easy. ![]() Pasadena, California, United States ![]() Added Sep 26, 2009 Going to Huntington Gardens should be a full-day trip. There is so much to see and do, from exploring the many different gardens to walking through the museums. My absolute favorite section here is the desert garden. It's 10-acres full of every type of cactus and succulent imaginable ![]() Moss Landing, California, United States ![]() Added Sep 26, 2009 If spending any time in the Monterey Bay area, you must visit Phil's Fish Market, only a short drive from either Monterey or Santa Cruz. It's atmophere is relaxed, right by the water in the small and quaint town of Moss Landing. The food is AMAZING. It's famous for its delicious Cioppino, but the menu is incrediably diverse with seafood pastas, hot and cold sandwiches, steaks, fish platters, clam chowder, seven types of fish and chips, and an entire section of artichoke dishes. So good! ![]() Death Valley, California, United States ![]() Added Sep 26, 2009 If you come during the early spring, the weather is comfortable and depending on the rainfall that year you might be able to walk through Lake Badwater. Only a couple feet deep even in the deepest spots, how many times can you say you walked to the middle of a lake? The last time this happened, however, was in 2005. Who knows when it may happen again. ![]() Point Reyes Station, California, United States ![]() Added Sep 25, 2009 The Tomales Point Trail provides amazing views of the Pacific and great wildlife watching, as it is a Tule Elk Reserve. The weather is always cool, usually overcast, but at the same time, perfect. It's a 9.5 mile round-trip hike, however, you really only have to do half of it to experience the best of it. ![]() Sequim, Washington, United States ![]() Added Sep 25, 2009 Fun, laid-back festival. It costs $15, but that will get you into every festivity at every lavender farm all weekend long (3 days). Although, I don't know how many people actually go everyday. It's fun, but not that fun. The farms around the area open up their doors and each one has different activities: u-pick lavender, farmers markets, food vendors, music stages. Some do more than others. Tons of different lavender flavored foods, I liked the lavender lemonade. ![]() Las Vegas, Nevada, United States ![]() Added Sep 24, 2009 I love the style of this hotel. Each room has a different movie theme with posters and memorabilia. Our room was "Spice Girls: The Movie" themed... Thankfully, the movie theme isn't pervasive. Regardless, it's a cool idea. Otherwise, the beds are extremely comfortable, the linens are soft, and the bathrooms are huge. ![]() Portland, Oregon, United States ![]() Added Sep 23, 2009 This trail is so much fun! Getting to this final waterfall requires hiking through, under, and over various waterfalls. Although a little steep in some sections, it's a great easy day-hike through the lush Columbia River Gorge area. It's a good alternative to the more popular and crowded Multnomah Falls trail. ![]() Hanalei, Kauai, United States ![]() Added Sep 23, 2009 Don't expect a groomed, flowery garden--it's native plant preserve with rare and endangered plant species. If you love plants and are interested in native hawaiian botany, it's worth a trip. The self-tour is a short 3/4 mile loop into a valley, past lava rock terraced taro fields, and up onto a lookout over the ocean. ![]() Kaua'i, Kauai, United States ![]() Added Sep 23, 2009 It's only viewable by the lookout on the road, so it doesn't take a long time to see. It's a beautiful falls and an easy stop on a driving tour of the island. ![]() Bishop, California, United States ![]() Added Sep 23, 2009 Good location near South Lake and Lake Sabrina in Bishop Creek Canyon. Some campsites are located right next to Bishop Creek, some within 20 feet or less, nestled within groves of small aspen. We camped in site #3. Although the site was good sized and directly next to the creek, there was no shade at all, which made for some hot days. ![]() Toms Place, California, United States ![]() Added Sep 23, 2009 Babbling creeks, fields of wildflowers, towering mountains and alpine lakes. One of the most spectacular hikes I have ever been on, rivaling those of the Colorado Rockies. I went in late August when the wildflowers were nearly bloomed out and grasses were starting to dry. However, because the elevation is so high and it stays cool, it was still relatively green. I suggest going in mid to late July when it's the most green and the wildflowers are in full bloom. ![]() Mammoth Lakes, California, United States ![]() Added Sep 23, 2009 Just a short distance off of Highway 395, this is a great place to visit if you like fishing or have small children (even if you don't have either it's a beautiful location worth a visit). It's a self-tour and you most likely won't see anyone else while you're there. There are thousands of trout at various life stages that can be fed for 25 cents. ![]() United States ![]() Added Sep 23, 2009 From Seattle, it takes a while to get there, but it is well worth the time. I went in July when the weather was warm and dry but the forest was still lush and green. If you have limited time, definately do the Hall of Mosses trail, a very easy 0.8 mile loop, taking you into a ring of heavily mossed trees and ferns. Gorgeous! ![]() Lee Vining, California, United States ![]() Added Jul 23, 2009 If coming to Tuolumne Meadows, this is the quintessential day-hike. It's short, relatively easy and provides amazing views over the meadows and surrounding mountains. Beautiful! ![]() Page, Arizona, United States ![]() Added Jul 23, 2009 The colors here are amazing--from the reds and oranges of the sandstone to the blues and greens of the river below. The trail to this viewpoint is short and easy (3/4 mile), although some might consider it slightly difficult due to a steep ridge and deep sand on the trail. It's nothing crazy though, and well worth any small struggle. ![]() Kanab, Utah, United States ![]() Added Jul 23, 2009 Beautiful coral pink sand dunes that go on forever. Although it is off the beaten path, don't expect to find too much quiet because it's a popular location for off-highway vehicles. Other than the occasional noise from atvs, dune buggies, and rv's next to you, it's a great place to camp, with good shade from large junipers and soft ground (sand). They say they have trails, but it's all on the deep sand dunes and mostly for the ohv's. ![]() Big Water, Utah, United States ![]() Added Jul 23, 2009 I did this hike during the middle of the summer heat, which might have a negative effect on my opinion about it. The trail itself is 9 miles round trip and fairly easy to navigate. Although there is hardly any elevation change, because the trail follows a wide creek bed it can be difficult due to lack of any shade, many river rocks that make the ground unsteady, and sticky muddy areas. The rock formations themself are beautiful and almost make the trip worthwhile. However, because there are so many other beautiful things to see in the area, I would suggest exploring other trails that have more to offer before taking this one. And if you're thinking about doing it in the summer, don't underestimate the sun and heat... ![]() Yosemite Village, California, United States ![]() Added Jun 25, 2009 I've only been on a short section of this hike, however, what I do know about it is that it's the best method of coming down the mountain after doing the Half Dome Hike. It is slightly longer than going down the Mist Trail, but it is not as steep, making it totally worthwhile on tired and weary feet. ![]() United States ![]() Added Jun 25, 2009 Amazing, uncrowded, unspoiled viewpoint of Yosemite Valley. Because of this, I enjoyed this place even more than Glacier Point, which can easily become overbearingly touristy. ![]() Yosemite Village, California, United States ![]() Added Jun 25, 2009 Depending on your fitness level this can be a very strenuous hike. Another, slightly easier method to get to the top is to take the Panoramic Trail from Glacier Point to Little Yosemite Valley, which then meets the Half Dome Trail. This way avoids the steep treks up Vernal and Nevada Falls and takes you past Illilouette Falls. On the way back, instead of hiking back up to Glacier Point, come back down the Mist Trail. Going down hill isn't always easier, but afternoon light is best for photography of the falls. The only problem with this method is transportation. If you happen to have a friend drop you off at Glacier Point and pick you up at Happy Isles, it's perfect. If you don't, you can take a shuttle back up to Glacier Point, but it's slow and undependable. ![]() Playa del Carmen, Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico ![]() Added Feb 15, 2009 This is one of the many Playacar development all-inclusive hotels. A couple resorts away is another Wyndham resort, the Viva Wyndham Maya. Those staying at the Azteca have full access to everything that the Maya resort offers as well (those staying at the Maya don't, except for restaurants) This includes multiple restaurants and a pool with a swim up bar. Both resorts offer bikes for rental (with locks provided), which are perfect for a day-trip in Playa del Carmen. Overall, our stay here was very enjoyable. The rooms were nice, the staff was friendly, the food was good (not amazing though), the drinks were flowing, and there was always something to do--from booking a free catamaran ride, biking into Playa, going to resort events/games, swimming in the pools and ocean, and of course, eating and drinking to no end. ![]() Valladolid, Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico ![]() Added Feb 15, 2009 If visiting in the summer, this is the best place to go after walking outside in the extreme heat and humidity. The underground cavern is a natural air conditioner and the ice cold water is a welcome refreshment. The vendors surrounding the cenote are great as well, especially those selling freshly cut open coconut juice. ![]() Hanalei, Kauai, United States ![]() Added Feb 15, 2009 Beautiful beach with great access to snorkeling. It's also the trailhead for Kalalau Trail. Because of this, the parking situation can be a little difficult at times. Go early and avoid the crowds. ![]() Santa Cruz, California, United States ![]() Added Feb 15, 2009 While hiking these trails is amazing, I recommend biking along the coastal trail because you can go farther in less time. The dirt trails are even and easy to ride, although sometimes a little muddy, but the views are well worth it. There are several beach access areas. However, be ready to pick up your bike and walk up and down some steep cliffs. Because of this though, the small cove beaches are secluded and prestine. ![]() Jean Lafitte, Louisiana, United States ![]() Added Feb 15, 2009 Great swamp tours, provided by the individuals who own and live on the land that you are touring. They were extremely friendly and packed full of information. The tour guide will get as up close and personal as possible with the bayou wildlife and will, if possible, catch small alligators to view on the boat. If you are staying in New Orleans, they will provide all of the transportation to and from the boat. This was one of the best nature tour experiences I have ever had, well worth any amount of money. ![]() New Orleans, Louisiana, United States ![]() Added Feb 15, 2009 This cemetery is a must see when visiting New Orleans. It is home to Marie Laveau, the voodoo queen, Homer Plessy, and Paul Morphy, plus it's the filming location for Easy Rider. While you can easily tour the cemetery on your own, it really helps to have a guide. While there are tons of cemetery/voodoo tours in New Orelans, I highly recommend taking a tour with Save our Cemeteries or Historic New Orleans Tours. These tour providers will provide you with real information and history, rather than giving you fancy costumes and made up fairytales. The tour guides actually care about preserving the cemeteries, rather than just making a buck. ![]() Washington, District of Columbia, United States ![]() Added Feb 15, 2009 With all of the other exciting history and museums found in Washington D.C., the Old Post Office Tower isn't the most exciting place to visit. What makes this building stand out, however, are it's views of the city. The self-guided ride to the top of the tower in a small glass elevator is free and it's views are amazing. With an uninterrupted 360 degree view, you have a birds-eye view of almost every important monument and building in Washington. Also, the buildling is not a huge tourist attraction, so you most likely won't have to fight with bus-fulls of people. ![]() Badwater, California, United States ![]() Added Feb 15, 2009 The best time to go to the Badwater Basin is during the Winter or Early Spring. During this time, the basin can acually be full of water (depending on the yearly rainfall). The lake is usually very shallow and can be walked through, usually only reaching up to the knees. It's kind of fun walking through a shallow lake and it might be the only time you can get a picture of yourself standing in the middle of a lake. Otherwise, this basin is dry and HOT. ![]() Kaua'i, Kauai, United States ![]() Added Feb 12, 2009 The patchwork taro fields and surrounding mountains are green, green, green! It's so easy to find and stop at, it's a must, when driving in the North Shore. ![]() Coba, Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico ![]() Added Feb 12, 2009 There are so many things to experience when visiting Coba, it really is somewhere you must go when visiting the Yucatan. To get to the various ruins you have several choices: walking, biking, or renting a two-person passenger bike with driver. I suggest walking to the ruins at first so that you can enjoy the smaller details of the surrounding jungle (that you can't see while whizzing by on a bike) and renting a passenger bike on the way back, so someone else can do all the work, after you are completely worn out from climbing the 130 foot ruin. The view of the jungle from the top of the pyramid, Nohoc Mul, goes on forever and is well worth the struggle to get there. When I climbed it in June, reaching the top of the pyramid also provided the added bonus of a cool breeze--a welcoming change from the hot humidity in the thick jungle below. ![]() Playa del Carmen, Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico ![]() Added Feb 12, 2009 Playa del Carmen is a great alternative for those of us who want to enjoy the warm crystal blue waters of the Mexican Carribean coast or explore the ancient Mayan ruins, but don't want to endure the dirty party atmosphere of Cancun. The area is extremely affordable and packed full of all-inclusive resorts within easy walking or biking distance from downtown. Downtown Playa is full of the typical souvenir shops (some of which have free tequila tastings!) but it's also full of great food experiences. From tradiational Mayan food restaurants to street tacos and fruit stands. My favorite memory of staying here is eating the best street tacos I've ever had in my life (and I didn't get sick), topping them off with fresh watermelon, mango, coconut, pineapple, and honey dew spears that we bought for $1 at the nearby fruit stands. Playa is also just a short ferry ride away from Cozumel, home to some of the best diving in the world. ![]() Carmel, California, United States ![]() Added Feb 5, 2009 This is an amazingly beautiful and little known state park. The park is located on an isolated penninsula, far from any noise or distractions. Easy hikes take you though groves of Monterey Cypress, to stunning viewpoints that look over Monterey Bay, calming pebble beaches, tidepools full of life, and ancient conglomerate rock formations that jet up from the crashing waves. Wildlife abounds and during the winter it is an excellent location for watching the whale migration. I grew up going to this park and can't imagine a better place to experience the true natural beauty of the central California coast. ![]() New Orleans, Louisiana, United States ![]() Added Jan 28, 2009 Brennan's for Breakfast has some of the most amazing food that I have ever eaten. I suggest the Shrimp Sardou - Spicy fried shrimp over artichoke hearts and creamed spinach, smothered in hollandaise. Experiencing the creation of Banana's Foster is also a must. There is nothing better... ![]() New Orleans, Louisiana, United States ![]() Added Jan 28, 2009 You know the food is good when there is a line out the door. The Muffalletta sandwiches here are the best in New Orleans! They're also huge. Unless you're superman, don't expect to eat a whole sandwich. I usually only get down 1/4. The grocery store is packed with varying Italian groceries (canned goods, cheeses, meats...) and also sells different types of fresh Italian salads. If coming to New Orleans, you can't miss eating here. There is a small eating area inside, however, I suggest taking it to go and enjoying it in Jackson Square or by the river. ![]() New Orleans, Louisiana, United States ![]() Added Jan 28, 2009 This is a great hotel to stay in when visiting the French Quarter whether going to New Orleans to party or relax. If you're there to party, your room is steps from Bourbon. If you want to explore the history and culture of New Orleans, it's an extremely short distance from Jackson Square, Cafe du Monde, etc. Plus, the hotel itself used to be the Old French Opera House. If you aren't going to stay up all night, you will probably want to ask for a room in the back, rather than one facing the street. However, the balconies facing Bourbon are amazing for people watching. The location of the hotel alone makes it a great place to stay, right on the corner of Toulouse and Bourbon right in the heart of the Quarter. The decore and atmosphere of the hotel is quiet and luxurious, which is quite different from what's happening outside on Bourbon. ![]() Monterey, California, United States ![]() Added Jan 8, 2009 A great place to rent bicycle or kayaking supplies. The Cannery Row location is located right across the street from the beach where kayaking begins and right next to a large bike trail. ![]() New Orleans, Louisiana, United States ![]() Added Jan 8, 2009 This famous street can provide hours of entertainment, whether you're drinking or not. Some bars are open 24-hours and the partying follows suit. If you're not dead the next morning, wake up early and go walk around after the street cleaning crews have sprayed the street down with disinfectant solution. While there may be some lingering revelers stumbling around, for the most part the street is competely deserted and clean--an interesting contrast to the partying the night before. ![]() New Orleans, Louisiana, United States ![]() Added Oct 23, 2008 Yes, Pat O'Brien's may be one of the more touristy spots along Bourbon and it can be fairly crowded, but it is still makes for a great lazy afternoon drink or late night party spot. The drinks are amazing, good sized, and guaranteed to give a buzz. The waiters are friendly. The courtyard and unique fire fountain are beautiful. Plus, there are multiple bars for whatever mood you may be in, including the outdoor courtyard, main bar, and piano bar. Beware, however, that drink prices vary depending on which bar you visit, the piano bar being the most expensive. Regardless, there is nothing better than a Hurricane with friends. ![]() Lancaster, California, United States ![]() Added Oct 21, 2008 Beautiful reserve to visit in the spring-time when the wildflowers are in bloom. Fields of poppies strech out endlessly. Predicting the poppy season can be difficult and during some years the poppies hardly bloom. Other than for the poppies, this preserve serves little purpose and is not worth visiting unless you want to walk through open desert. ![]() Santa Cruz, California, United States ![]() Added Oct 21, 2008 A gorgeous and easily accessible state park. The nature trails perfect for either short or full-day hiking. I highly recommend the Bennett Creek Trail which follows a small creek, taking you through large redwood groves full of ferns and lush vegetation.
