Page 1 of 10 My Reviews![]() Sun City, Arizona, United States ![]() Added Dec 5, 2009 It's such a yummy place :-) ![]() Canterbury, England, United Kingdom ![]() Added Jan 15, 2009 This palace was leased to a succession of nobles, and in the early 1600s was in the possession of Edward Lord Wotton, who employed John Tradescant the elder, to lay out formal gardens around it. This palace is thought to have survived until a great storm in 1703, which certainly caused great damage to the already ruinous structure of the abbey. Now a World Heritage Site, the ruins of this important monastic foundation built by Saint Augustine are in the care of English Heritage. Today the ruin precincts cover a substantial area east of the cathedral, and in fact, in its heyday the abbey's church rivalled nearby Canterbury Cathedral in size. The foundations of the main abbey building are located at 51°16′41.26″N 1°5′17.54″E ![]() Canterbury, England, United Kingdom ![]() Added Jan 15, 2009 Canterbury Castle is a motte-and-bailey Norman Castle in Canterbury, Kent, England (grid reference TR14545743).[1] It is five minutes walk from Canterbury East Station and main bus station around City Wall. Canterbury Castle was one of the three original Royal castles of Kent (the other two Rochester Castle and Dover Castle). They were all built very soon after the Battle of Hastings, on the main Roman road from Dover to London. This was the route taken by William the Conqueror in October 1066, and they were built originally as motte-and-bailey castles to guard this important route ![]() Canterbury, England, United Kingdom ![]() Added Jan 15, 2009 Very nicely done .. worth checking out! ![]() Canterbury, England, United Kingdom ![]() Added Jan 15, 2009 Canterbury Cathedral in Canterbury, Kent, is one of the oldest and most famous Christian structures in England and forms part of a World Heritage Site. It is the cathedral of the Archbishop of Canterbury, leader of the Church of England and the worldwide Anglican Communion. Its formal title is the Cathedral and Metropolitical Church of Christ at Canterbury. ![]() Rome, Lazio Region, Italy ![]() Added Jan 15, 2009 The villa was created at Tibur (modern-day Tivoli) as a retreat from Rome for Roman Emperor Hadrian in the early 2nd century. Hadrian was said to dislike the palace on the Palatine Hill in Rome, leading to the construction of the retreat. During the later years of his reign, he actually governed the empire from the villa. A large court therefore lived there permanently. A postal service connected them to Rome. After Hadrian, the villa was used by his various successors. During the decline of the Roman Empire the villa fell into disuse and was partially ruined. In the 16th century Cardinal Ippolito II d'Este had much of the marble and statues in Hadrian's villa removed to decorate his own Villa d'Este located nearby. ![]() Tivoli, Lazio Region, Italy ![]() Added Jan 15, 2009 The Villa d'Este is a villa situated at Tivoli, near Rome. Listed as a UNESCO world heritage site, it is a masterpiece of Italian architecture and especially garden design. ![]() Bryce Canyon, Utah, United States ![]() Added Jan 15, 2009 Bryce Canyon National Park (pronounced /ˈbraɪs/) is a national park located in southwestern Utah in the United States. Contained within the park is Bryce Canyon. Despite its name, this is not actually a canyon, but rather a giant natural amphitheater created by erosion along the eastern side of the Paunsaugunt Plateau. Bryce is distinctive due to its geological structures, called hoodoos, formed from wind, water, and ice erosion of the river and lakebed sedimentary rocks. The red, orange and white colors of the rocks provide spectacular views to visitors. Bryce is at a much higher elevation than nearby Zion National Park and the Grand Canyon. The rim at Bryce varies from 8,000 to 9,000 feet (2,400 to 2,700 m), whereas the south rim of the Grand Canyon sits at 7,000 feet (2,100 m) above sea level. ![]() Caparica, Lisbon & Surrounds Region, Portugal ![]() Added Jan 15, 2009 Caparica is known for its numerous beaches. The beaches are very popular in the summer, due to their proximity to Lisbon, which is located across the Tagus River from Caparica. These beaches have suffered from erosion in recent years. The Portuguese government has taken steps to reduce these patterns, but the erosion has continued at several of the beaches located closest to the mouth of the Tagus. ![]() Cairo, Cairo & Surrounding Region, Egypt ![]() Added Jan 15, 2009 Just walking around the 13-acre base of the Great Pyramid, the equivalent of more than 350 New York City blocks, gives you a pretty good sense of that immensity. Then there are the oft-repeated, but nonetheless impressive statistics: 2.3 million blocks of stone, each weighing two and half tons, stacked so precisely you can't slip a credit card, or in Cheops' day, a sheet of papyrus, between them. Soaring 450 feet above the plateau, the great pyramid was once about thirty feet higher. That was before the Romans stripped it of its polished, white limestone outer casing, which they ground into plaster. ![]() Tombstone, Arizona, United States ![]() Added Jan 15, 2009 Only real 'wild west' town still standing. Must see :) ![]() Ronchamp, Franche-Comte, France ![]() Added Jan 15, 2009 Very nice church .. unique design The lowdown onWhat's this person like as a travel companion? What do friends really think?
