Sue Steiner is co-founder and part-owner of the Swiss-based tour operator, Xanadu Travel. She grew up in the northeast of the USA. After completing her education, she travelled across North America, Europe and northern Africa. Thousands of bus, train and cargo ship miles later, she settled down in Switzerland. Becoming a mother of two beautiful daughters curtailed her travel activities to shorter and less out-of-the-way places.
           
A new opportunity for a long and exciting trip came in the second half of the 1990s. Sue’s husband had amassed so much overtime that he could take leave from his work for nearly five months. Along with the children, who had not yet started school, they filled a 60-year-old steamer trunk, travelled up to Cardiff and boarded the RMS St Helena for a three-month stay on the island of St Helena.
           
That’s when Sue fell in love with the people and the island of St Helena, at last understanding why her husband wanted to come back to this isolated place he had discovered during a brief visit in 1985.
